Book excerpt: The hospitality and tourism sector is a large and rapidly expanding industry worldwide, and can rightfully be described as a vehicle of globalisation. Hotels are among the cornerstones of the industry often drawing workers from the most vulnerable segments of multicultural labour markets, accommodating and entertaining tourists and business travelers from around the world. This book explores the organisation of work, worker identities and worker strategies in hotel workplaces, as they are located in heterogeneous labour markets being changed by processes of globalisation. It uses an explicitly geographical approach to understand how different groups of workers experience and respond to challenges in the hospitality industry, and is based on recent theoretical debates and empirical research on hotel workplaces in cities as different as Oslo, Goa, London, Las Vegas and Toronto. A multi-scalar analysis is taken where concrete worker bodies and their physical, emotional and embodied labour are seen in relation to, among other aspects: the regulation of national and regional labour markets, city governments with global city ambitions, and global corporate actors and labour migration patterns. The book sheds light on the hotel workplace as a hierarchical and fragmented social space as well as addressing questions on worker mobility, the fragmentation of work, scales of organisation and how workers can help shape the regulation of their industry. This timely volume brings together contributions from international academics and is valuable reading for all those interested in hospitality, tourism, human geography and globalisation.

Book excerpt: 'Advertising in Leisure and Tourism' brings together the current thinking in this area, via extensive international case studies, to provide a critical appraisal of the potential of advertising in leisure and tourism. Arranged in three parts, the book introduces the role of advertising, evaluating its relationship within other aspects of tourism and leisure marketing; the techniques used: advertising a range of products to key market segments; and new strategic directions in advertising. It focuses on the new destination marketing strategy of branding and assesses the relationship between advertising and other increasing important areas of promotion, including sponsorship, ambient marketing and sales promotion. Advertising and marketing professionals in the leisure industries and undergraduates on marketing-related modules in tourism, leisure and hospitality courses will find this an invaluable text. Since the case studies are drawn from an international field, readers will be able to assess best practice from a variety of sources and countries. Dr Nigel Morgan is Principal Lecturer in Hospitality, Leisure and Tourism and Annette Pritchard is Senior Lecturer at School of Leisure and Tourism, at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tourism has been one of the world's fastest growing industries, and there are large societies entirely dependent upon the visitor for their sustenance. The quality of service in hotel industry is an important factor of successful business. The existing trend of complete quality management in hotel industry ensures the achievement of competitive advantage of hotel companies and is therefore the subject of contemporary research into service quality in hotel industry. Much of the attention given to service quality is motivated by the premise that it will increase customer satisfaction and ultimately lead to better financial performance. The quality of products and services has also been related to external indicators of customer satisfaction such as complaints, warranty, litigation and market share. Satisfied customers often lead to loyal customers who continuously repurchase the product or service. However, all organizations are dependent upon repeat purchases that lead to higher profitability. Empirical evidence suggests that customer satisfaction mediates the relationship between service quality and firm performance. Service Quality in Leisure and Tourism aims to develop an awareness of the underpinning theories of quality as applicable to leisure and tourism. It deals with the impact of service quality in tourism and customer satisfaction; presents the theoretical model of the research indicating the dimensions of quality in tourism. It shows that such dimensions as Quality of accessibility, accommodation, venue and their components contribute directly in satisfaction of tourists, their intend to return and eventually development of tourism industry in a region.Delivering high quality service within the hospitality industry positively influences a customer's perception of value. Tourist satisfaction is the result of the interaction between a tourist's experience in the destination area and his or her previous expectations about the destination. Satisfying the tourist is critical because it has an effect on the expectations and intentions for the customer's next destination purchasing decision. Practitioners and educators alike will find this book to be invaluable in their businesses and in preparing students for the business world.
