Book excerpt: "This report contains the findings of a study that was performed to establish the variablity of Chappy V-notch (CVN) impact toughness within plates of A572 Grade 50 and A588 steels. The study included plate thickness up to 4 inches meeting AASHTO Zone 3 fracture notch toughness requirements. Both existing literature and the results of research conducted for this study were examined in an attempt to define the variablity in CVN values. The report provides a comprehensive description of the research, including a discussion of the statistical analysis methods used, along with recommended revisions to the AASHTO Guide Specifications for Fracture Critical Non-Redundant Steel Bridge Members. The proposed revisions are intended to provide a reasonable certainty of safe and effective performance of steel plate with respect to toughness. The contents of this report will be of immediate interest and use to bridge engineers, materials engineers, steel bridge fabrication, specification writing bodies, researchers, and others concerned with the design and fabrication of steel bridge elements." --from foreword.

This book was released on 1969 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The yield strength range for steels from 180 to 210 ksi is currently covered by four weldable alloys of the following nominal chemical analysis: 18%Ni-8%Co-3%Mo maraging steel, 12%Ni-5%Cr-3%Mo maraging steel, 9%Ni-4%Co-0.20%C quenched and tempered (Q and T) steel, and 10%Ni-8%Co-2%Cr-1%Mo-0.10%C Q and T steel. Broad ranges of fracture resistance have been reported for these materials based on various fracture tests, and this report presents information for material selection and design guidance by providing an analysis of the interactions between the metallurgical and mechanical parameters that contribute to the fracture resistance of plate products. Definitions of the interaction between the metallurgical and the mechanical aspects are developed with the use of the Dynamic Tear (DT) test and the Ratio Analysis Diagram (RAD). (Author).

Book excerpt: The state of knowledge of fracture-safe design for steels is examined in relation to the requirements for achieving practical solutions to general engineering problems. Analytical procedures evolved from fracture mechanics theory are demonstrated to provide for quantitative interpretations of engineering fracture toughness tests. It is thus possible to couple the procedural simplicity which is inherent to engineering tests with the analytical advantages of fracture mechanics theory. The coupling of these two approaches provides for practical advances in fracture-safe design which cover the totality of general engineering problems and requirements. The Charpy V test is shown to have applicability for use in the described fashion primarily in relation to the strength transition for high strength steels. The combined diagrams should serve the needs of both the materials and design fields. (Author).

This book provides ratings for toughness, edge retention, and corrosion resistance for all of the popular knife steels. Micrographs of over 50 steels. Specific recommended heat treatments for each steel. And answers to questions like: 1) Does a thinner or thicker edge last longer? 2) What heat treatment leads to the best performance? 3) Are there performance benefits to forging blades? 4) Should I use stainless or carbon steel? All of these questions and more are answered by a metallurgist who grew up around the knife industry.

Book excerpt: In this book, advanced steel technologies mainly developed at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), Japan, for structure control, mechanical properties, and the related mechanisms are introduced and discussed. NIMS has long worked on developing advanced steel techniques, namely, producing advanced steels by using only simple alloying elements such as carbon, manganese, and silicon, and also by utilizing steel scrap. The hope is that this approach will lead to a technology of a so-called steel-to-steel recycling process, with the ultimate goal of a recycling process such as an automotive-steel-to-automotive-steel recycling process to take the place of the current cascade-type recycling system. The main idea is to utilize ultra-grain refining structures and hetero structures as well as martensite structures. In particular, the focus of this book is on tensile strength and toughness of advanced steels from both the fundamental and engineering points of view. Fundamentally, a unique approach to analysis is taken, based on fracture surface energy as effective grain size is employed to better understand the mechanism of property improvement. From the engineering point of view, in fracture toughness such factors as crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) of advanced steels are evaluated in comparison with those of conventional steels.

Book excerpt: As the shift from the Metal Age progresses, materials engineers and materials scientists seek new analytical and design methods to create stronger and more reliable materials. Based on extensive research and developmental work done at the author’s multi-disciplinary material laboratory, this graduate-level and professional reference addresses the relationship between fracture mechanisms (macroscale) and the microscopic, with the goal of explaining macroscopic fracture behavior based on a microscopic fracture mechanism. A careful fusion of mechanics and materials science, this text and monograph systematically considers an array of materials, from metals through ceramics and polymers, and demonstrates lab-tested strategies to develop desirable high-temperature materials for technological applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fracture toughness of high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels and the conventional structural steels can vary over a wide range from an elastic to a plastic performance. Prediction and certification of structural performance is discussed, and a structural-integrity technology which integrates linear elastic-fracture mechanics (LEFM) with the more metallurgically oriented empirical analyses is described. Examples of the critical features of practical test methods are given to illustrate the advantages of using a new test, the Dynamic Test (DT) test, for characterization purposes. Although test results for toughness characterization must be quantitative, the requirements for toughness criteria in material specifications are usually not as restrictive unless structural performance must be certified. Certification of a high level of structural performance will justify the use of high-quality materials. (Author).

Book excerpt: Amply illustrated and deeply detailed, this classic guide details the creation of grades of steel via heat treatments. It offers fascinating insight into metal manufacturing processes. Since this guidebook was published in 1914, it carries a certain historic value; at the time, the United States economy was undergoing industrialization. Steel was in high demand, and the technology behind its manufacture was improved upon greatly. The metal's importance could not be understated; the expanding rail networks, new multistory constructions, plus tools and factory machines all required huge quantities of quality metal. As we learn, steel is not a simple product: various grades must be achieved via subtle variations in the heat and techniques applied during its manufacture. To articulate his points, the author appends over ninety charts and diagrams of equipment. Together these show how the furnaces work, and how the hardness of the metal is varied to meet strict specifications. Certain intense processes receive their own chapter, such as steel for machine tools and the use of the electric furnace, plus alloys and the testing of the finished products. For its breadth of detail and superb understanding, Erik Oberg's work remains readable over a century since its original publication.
