Book Synopsis Geological Storage of CO2 in Deep Saline Formations by : Auli Niemi
Download or read book Geological Storage of CO2 in Deep Saline Formations written by Auli Niemi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-24 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers readers a comprehensive overview, and an in-depth understanding, of suitable methods for quantifying and characterizing saline aquifers for the geological storage of CO2. It begins with a general overview of the methodology and the processes that take place when CO2 is injected and stored in deep saline-water-containing formations. It subsequently presents mathematical and numerical models used for predicting the consequences of CO2 injection. This book provides descriptions of relevant experimental methods, from laboratory experiments to field scale site characterization and techniques for monitoring spreading of the injected CO2 within the formation. Experiences from a number of important field injection projects are reviewed, as are those from CO2 natural analog sites. Lastly, the book presents relevant risk management methods. Geological storage of CO2 is widely considered to be a key technology capable of substantially reducing the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere, thereby reducing the negative impacts of such releases on the global climate. Around the world, projects are already in full swing, while others are now being initiated and executed to demonstrate the technology. Deep saline formations are the geological formations considered to hold the highest storage potential, due to their abundance worldwide. To date, however, these formations have been relatively poorly characterized, due to their low economic value. Accordingly, the processes involved in injecting and storing CO2 in such formations still need to be better quantified and methods for characterizing, modeling and monitoring this type of CO2 storage in such formations must be rapidly developed and refined.

Book Synopsis Subsurface Solute Transport Models and Case Histories by : Vyacheslav G. Rumynin
Download or read book Subsurface Solute Transport Models and Case Histories written by Vyacheslav G. Rumynin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-14 with total page 820 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book addresses the development of the basic knowledge of the subsurface solute transfer with a particular emphasis on field data collection and analysis coupled with modeling (analytical and numerical) tool application. The relevant theoretical developments are concerned mainly with the formulation and solution of deterministic mass-transport equations for a wide range of engineering issues in groundwater quality assessment and forecasting. The book gives many computational examples and case studies drawn from the conducted field investigations. The analyzed problems are as follows: investigation and prediction of groundwater contamination by industrial contaminants and solutions (radionuclides, chloride and nitrate brine) with special focus on the effect of (a) aquifer heterogeneity, anisotropy, and dual porosity, (b) density contrast existing between industrial waste and groundwater, or in density-stratified artesian and coastal groundwater systems; (c) physicochemical interactions that play a major role in retarding (e.g. adsorption) or enhancing (e.g. interactions between dissolved species and mobile colloids) contaminant transport; prediction of the effects of pumping on groundwater quality at wellfields; groundwater dating using stable and radioactive isotopes for prediction and assessment of contamination potential; field and laboratory tests’ design and analysis, and monitoring data interpretation; partitioning of surface and subsurface flows using isotope techniques. One of the most essential topics addressed in the book is the migration and fate of radionuclides. Model development is motivated by field data analysis from a number of radioactively contaminated sites in the Russian Federation: near-surface radioactive waste disposal sites and deep-well radioactive waste injection sites. They play a unique role in the advancement of knowledge of the subsurface behavior and fate of many hazardous radionuclides and can be considered as field-scale laboratories. Thus, the book, along with theoretical findings, contains field information, which will facilitate the understanding of subsurface solute transport and the development of a methodology for practical applications to groundwater hydrology.

Book Synopsis Model Elements and Network Solutions of Heat, Mass and Momentum Transport Processes by : George L. Danko
Download or read book Model Elements and Network Solutions of Heat, Mass and Momentum Transport Processes written by George L. Danko and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-26 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work provides an enormous contribution to the broad effort of modeling heat, mass and momentum transport in multi-physics problems with the development of new solution approaches. It re-visits the time-honored technique of network application using flow network solutions for all transport process components for a coupled modeling task. The book further provides as formulation of the conservation laws for mass, energy and momentum, specifically for the branches and nodes of transport networks using the combination of the Eulerian and Lagrangean modeling methods. With the extension of Bernoulli’s original concept, a new solution is given for the flow field of viscous and compressible fluids as driven by the balance of mechanical energy, coupled to the thermodynamics of the transport system. Applicable to simple or large-scale tasks, the new model elements and methods are built on first principles. Throughout the work, the book provides original formulations, their mathematical derivations as well as applications in a numerical solution scheme.

Book Synopsis Groundwater Modelling in Arid and Semi-Arid Areas by : Howard S. Wheater
Download or read book Groundwater Modelling in Arid and Semi-Arid Areas written by Howard S. Wheater and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-09-09 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arid and semi-arid regions face major challenges in the management of scarce freshwater resources under pressures of population, economic development, climate change, pollution and over-abstraction. Groundwater is commonly the most important water resource in these areas. Groundwater models are widely used globally to understand groundwater systems and to guide decisions on management. However, the hydrology of arid and semi-arid areas is very different from that of humid regions, and there is little guidance on the special challenges of groundwater modelling for these areas. This book brings together the experience of internationally leading experts to fill a gap in the scientific and technical literature. It introduces state-of-the-art methods for modelling groundwater resources, illustrated with a wide-ranging set of illustrative examples from around the world. The book is valuable for researchers, practitioners in developed and developing countries, and graduate students in hydrology, hydrogeology, water resources management, environmental engineering and geography.
