This book was released on 2017-03-10 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an expanded, larger-format, and more highly illustrated version of a smaller book released by CEU Press in 2011. It presents and comments on an extensive set of religious and personal photographs and illustrations that depict people along with divine beings or absent loved ones. First, Christian examines the periodic appearances of Christ-like strangers in the Spanish countryside through the vision of a woman in La Mancha in 1931. Then he considers the long history of images with liquids on them not only for early modern Spain, but also in the United States, Italy and France in the 1940s and 1950s. The third and most extensive chapter addresses the iconography of illustrated depictions of divine and spirit beings in conjunction with humans and how its conventions were incorporated into commercial postcards and personal photographs, culminating in photo montages of families and their absent soldiers in World War I. The fourth theme is new to this edition. It compares the electric moments in Spanish communities when people ritually come into physical contact with saints and with animals, or transform themselves into saints or animals for ritual purposes. Over 50 of the color photographs by Spain's preeminent documentary photographer, Cristina García Rodero, are included.
Book Synopsis The Crying Book by : Heather Christle
Download or read book The Crying Book written by Heather Christle and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bestselling "lyrical, moving book: part essay, part memoir, part surprising cultural study" is an examination of why we cry, how we cry, and what it means to cry from a woman on the cusp of motherhood confronting her own depression (The New York Times Book Review). Heather Christle has just lost a dear friend to suicide and now must reckon with her own depression and the birth of her first child. As she faces her grief and impending parenthood, she decides to research the act of crying: what it is and why people do it, even if they rarely talk about it. Along the way, she discovers an artist who designed a frozen–tear–shooting gun and a moth that feeds on the tears of other animals. She researches tear–collecting devices (lachrymatories) and explores the role white women’s tears play in racist violence. Honest, intelligent, rapturous, and surprising, Christle’s investigations look through a mosaic of science, history, and her own lived experience to find new ways of understanding life, loss, and mental illness. The Crying Book is a deeply personal tribute to the fascinating strangeness of tears and the unexpected resilience of joy.

A free-spirited and rebellious Muslim-American of Indo-Pakistani descent, she rejected the constricting notions of family, duty, obligation, and fate, choosing instead to become a journalist, the world her home. Five years later, tragedy strikes, throwing Saira's life into turmoil. Now the woman who chased the world to uncover the details of other lives must confront the truths of her own. In need of understanding, she looks to the stories of those who came before—her grandparents, a beloved aunt, her mother and father. As Saira discovers the hope, pain, joy, and passion that defined their lives, she begins to face what she never wanted to admit—that choice is not always our own, and that faith is not just an intellectual preference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is the fourteenth century, and after finding the survivors who have been taken from their island home and sold into slavery to a Sultan’s son in a far distant realm, Avalon is critically wounded in a fierce battle. His poisoned wounds leave him in a deep coma. While waiting for Avalon to recover, Genevieve and Ameliana purchase the slaves’ freedom and prepare the Ghost Runner for the upcoming voyage to return the islanders to their ancestral lands so they can rebuild their lives. The sorcerer Caligastia follows them on their journey on his black-sailed ship using a homing device, a pyramid-shaped crystal that was hidden in the hold of Ghost Runner, but when it was discovered and jettisoned over the side, it implodes in the ocean’s deep depths with such catastrophic force it caused a massive tidal wave. Upon reaching the islanders’ archipelago, they set about the laborious task of rebuilding the derelict town. Both of Avalon’s wives, who are soon due to give birth, decide to take Ghost Runner to the neighboring archipelago where bird life abounds and turtles lay their eggs on a small sandy quay. The egg hunt is ill-fated when a hurricane appears over the horizon. Not wanting to be surrounded by dangerous reef inside the lagoon when the storm hits, Genevieve decides to sail Ghost Runner back to the safety of their home anchorage but with disastrous results. Ten years came and went on their island paradise when, early one morning, a tsunami sweeps across the archipelago and in minutes destroys all they knew and love as they are swept out to sea amongst the debris. Fate intervenes when they are plucked from the storm-tossed and littered ocean by the one man who can lead them back to Avalon’s homeland thousands of miles to the east. After many adventures of sailing through the hurricane season to take advantage of favorable winds to blow them thousands of miles to the east, they arrive at their destination and leave their beloved schooner to travel overland for many months on horseback into the formidable and distant Alps. The expedition is fraught with danger as snow leopards stalk and attack the horses. Not only do they have to contend with snow leopards, wolf packs, treacherous snow-covered trails, and precipitous ravines in the rugged Alps, but a relentless enemy is lying in wait to ambush them to ensure they never reach the kingdom of Nebadon.

Book Synopsis The Glass Tears Poem Journal by : Randal S. Doaty
Download or read book The Glass Tears Poem Journal written by Randal S. Doaty and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-11-16 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ray of sunlight came through a pane in the glass studio workshop. The scrap glass bucket was nearly full. On top of this heap was a hardened drip of glass that had carelessly fallen from a glass artists punti. Glimmering in the sunlight that morning was the very first Glass Teardrop. It may have remained just scrap until the simple words glass tears softly whispered in the imagination of a would-be poet. Two totally different art forms were about to be married. The story of Glass Tears is purely serendipitous. The need for a unique and meaningful sympathy gift happened at just about the same time as the glass teardrop appeared at the studio. The poem, Glass Tears came to Randal S. Doaty as unexpectedly as the teardrop itself. He had never written a poem before, but he felt the need to give his new teardrop a voice. The Glass Tears Poem Journal is a collection of what many different Glass Tears have spoken through the voice of this poet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by Virgil’s exquisitely ambivalent phrase “sunt lacrimae rerum” (there are tears of/for/in things), Andriy Sodomora, the Ukrainian “voice” of classical antiquity, has produced a series of original vignettes and essays about things: the big things in our lives (like happiness, loneliness, and aging); the small things we do or see daily, rarely paying attention to them (like a tree’s shadow or the kernels on an ear of corn); and the things (i.e., objects) to which we form connections. The selected stories presented here are the first English translations of Sodomora’s profoundly intellectual and intertextual prose. Through his nostalgic memories and recollections, Sodomora takes readers on a journey through western Ukraine, as well as through world literature, from ancient Greece and Rome to the poetry of Paul Verlaine and Federico García Lorca. This book has been published with the support of the Translate Ukraine Translation Program.
