Book excerpt: This volume contains twenty-four essays, which, in their subjects and methodology, pay tribute to the scholarship of Walter S. Melion. The contributions are grouped under three categories: “Devotion,” “Art and Image Theory,” and “Vision and Contemplation.” The Devotion section addresses votive practices, theological theory and polemic literature. The Art and Image Theory section focuses on Jesuit image theory, the reflexive dimension of works, and artists’ reflections on the function of images. Finally, the Vision and Contemplation section discusses the ‘early modern eye’ as a tool for thoughtful, prolonged looking to ascertain visual wit, deception, self-assessment and friendship, sacred and profane allegories.

Book Synopsis The Triune God: Systematics by : Bernard J. F. Lonergan

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in Latin for students at the Gregorian University in Rome, Bernard Lonergan's 1964 De Deo Trino (The Triune God) examines Christian Theology's conception of the Trinity in two parts. The first part, the pars dogmatic, is here translated into English in an edition that includes the original Latin on facing pages. The section called Prolegomena follows the dialectical development of Trinitarian doctrine by Christian thinkers from the time of the New Testament to the Council of Nicea (325 AD). The remainder of the volume consists of five theses outlining the evolution of the principal features of Trinitarian doctrine from the New Testament to the Council of Nicea and on through the Patristic era.The Triune God: Doctrines is complementary to the previously published The Triune God: Systematics. Together they represent the most massive treatment of the doctrine of the Trinity in recent centuries. This work of translation ensures that Lonergan's masterpiece, De Deo Trino, will at last be available in its entirety to contemporary readers.
Book Synopsis The Writings of Charles De Koninck by : Charles De Koninck
Download or read book The Writings of Charles De Koninck written by Charles De Koninck and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 2 of The Writings of Charles De Koninck carries on the project begun by volume 1 of presenting the first English edition of the collected works of the Catholic Thomist philosopher Charles De Koninck (1906–1965). Ralph McInerny (1929–2010) was the project editor and prepared the excellent translations. This volume begins with two works published in 1943: Ego Sapientia: The Wisdom That Is Mary, De Koninck's first study in Mariology, and The Primacy of the Common Good Against the Personalists (with The Principle of the New Order), which generated a strong critical reaction. Included in this volume are two reviews of The Primacy of the Common Good, by Yves R. Simon and I. Thomas Eschmann, O.P., and De Koninck's substantial response to Eschmann in his lengthy “In Defence of St. Thomas.” The volume concludes with a group of short essays: “The Dialectic of Limits as Critique of Reason,” “Notes on Marxism,” “This Is a Hard Saying,” “[Review of] Between Heaven and Earth,” and “Concept, Process, and Reality.”

Book Synopsis The Ecstasy of Love in the Thought of Thomas Aquinas by : Peter Kwasniewski
Download or read book The Ecstasy of Love in the Thought of Thomas Aquinas written by Peter Kwasniewski and published by Emmaus Academic. This book was released on 2021-05-07 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those interested in the concept of ecstasy would be forgiven for assuming that a sober scholastic like St. Thomas Aquinas had little place for the idea. Yet in this groundbreaking study, sure to refine our understanding of the Angelic Doctor, Peter Kwasniewski shows that St. Thomas contemplates the nature of ecstasy at key stages in the development of his thought and that it plays a crucial role in his doctrine of love. After a stimulating study of treatments of ecstasy in ancient philosophy, Sacred Scripture, and the medieval tradition prior to Aquinas, Kwasniewski finds that he can be seen as breathing new life into the concept. While his contemporary, St. Bonaventure, for example, tended to restrict ecstasy to the soul’s union with God, St. Thomas admitted the place of ecstasy in a variety of human activities. Furthermore, St. Thomas recognized that all love involves ecstatic transcendence, whether it be the creature’s self-oblation to the Creator, the reverence of an inferior for a superior, a superior’s generosity toward an inferior, or the mutual affection and help of equals joined in friendship. Love of persons for their own sake generates an ecstatic love in which the self is borne as a gift to another subject by sharing a common life aspiring to common goods. Kwasniewski also examines Aquinas on the question of whether or not God experiences ecstasy, and if so, in what ways. The Ecstasy of Love in the Thought of Thomas Aquinas makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the doctrine of love and to the interpretation of the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas. It is more than an analysis of key texts; it is an illuminating guide to the grammar of ecstasy.
