Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although considered an ancient concept, torture is still practised globally, and with more meticulousness and sophistication than ever before. Custodial violence refers to a form of torture that is experienced physically, psychologically, or emotionally in the custody of a lawful authority. The international legal regime on torture is an area of convergence between international human rights law and humanitarian law, both of which condemn torture in any form. Torture Behind Bars analyses the context of torture and ill-treatment of prisoners and crimes committed by the members of the police force. This may be in the form of custodial violence, or may begin from the point of detention and continue post-custody. The author reviews the role and accountability of the police force in India in the light of the reports of various national and international human rights committees, non-governmental organizations, and other independent reports. The book highlights several such cases which blatantly disregard the law meant for upholding the human rights and dignity of the individuals.

Download or read book "Crossfire" written by Henrik Alffram and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set up as an elite crime fighting force drawn from the military and police, Bangladesh's Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has routinely engaged in extrajudicial killings and torture of people in custody and claiming falsely that they died during an exchange of fire. According to RAB's own figures, the force has gunned down well over 600 alleged criminals since 2004. This report documents the ongoing human rights violations perpetrated by RAB officers in and around Dhaka after the current Awami League-led government came to power. Created by the Bangladesh National Party (BNP), RAB was heavily criticized by the Awami League while in opposition. However, after the Awami League took office in January 2009 the killings have continued and no RAB officer has been prosecuted. Government officials have even justified or denied RAB's abuses. Though there may be some within the system urging reform and accountability, RAB continues to operate with impunity. The Bangladesh government should follow through on its commitments and ensure that there are prompt, impartial, and independent investigations into torture and deaths in the custody of RAB. The government should prosecute all former and current members of RAB, of whatever rank, who are found to be responsible for human rights violations.
Book Synopsis Bangladesh--torture and Impunity by :
Download or read book Bangladesh--torture and Impunity written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report highlights the endemic problem of torture in Bangladesh. The report concludes that law enforcement agencies torture people for a variety of reasons including: to extract money; to ensure compliance with their own illegal activities; as favour to local politicians in return for a bribe; for personal satisfaction; to obtain confession from the prisoners to crimes they may not have committed; and most obviously because government authorities do not bring them to justice for torturing people. The report offers a set of recommendations to the Bangladeshi authorities which, if implemented, would safeguard people's right not to be subjected to torture."--Publisher website.

This book was released on 2023-05-18 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Postcolonial legacies continue to impact upon the Global South and this edited collection examines their influence on systems of policing, security management and social ordering. Expanding the Southern Criminology agenda, the book critically examines social harms, violence and war crimes, human rights abuses, environmental degradation and the criminalization of protest. The book asks how current states of policing came about, their consequences and whose interests they continue to serve through vivid international case studies, including prison struggles in Latin America and the misuse of military force. Challenging current criminological thinking on the Global South, the book considers how police and state overreach can undermine security and perpetuate racism and social conflict.
