Book excerpt: Excerpt from Torrey and Alexander: The Story of Their Lives The task of putting into book form for the first time a brief record of the life and work of Dr R. A. Torrey and Mr Charles M. Alexander has been a pleasant one. I have known them both almost since the first day they reached this little island of ours, and the increasing knowledge of them which has come to me in these two years has brought with it ever-increasing regard and love. They are men whom Carlyle would have been proud to include in his list of Heroes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The world is to-day experiencing a revival of religion which is destined to mark an important epoch in history. It is a revival which has already led thousands in various lands to a knowledge of Jesus Christ, and which its leaders with one accord prophesy will prove to be one of the most momentous in the history of the Christian Church. Thus far in its progress it far surpasses minor movements, and ranks alongside the great revivals of the past, such as the great awakening of 1729 to 1750, under the leadership of Jonathan Edwards, Whitefield, and the Wesleys, and the remarkable revival of 1857-59, which swept over the United States, Wales, and Ireland. The present revival is especially notable because of its cosmopolitan origin and progress. It seems to have originated in a prayer-meeting in Chicago; to have first broken out in Australia in 1902; to have been gradually kindled in England in 1903 and 1904, and to have burst forth into a bright flame in Wales at the beginning of 1905, whence it is now spreading throughout the entire world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with religious revivalism in the United States since 1825. It attempts to explain the part which revivalism has played, and is playing today, in the social, intellectual, and religious life of America. The aim has been, in describing the development of modern revivalism and the men who devoted their lives to it, to look below the surface phenomenon in an effort to discover why revivals have constantly recurred, what their effects have been, and what they meant not only to those directly concerned but to all Americans. If the revivals of the past century and a quarter have not always been the crucial factors in the course of American history that their devout exponents claimed, they have nevertheless been more significant than the social historians have yet acknowledged. from the Preface
Book Synopsis The Oxford History of Protestant Dissenting Traditions, Volume III by : Timothy Larsen

This book was released on 2017-04-28 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The five-volume Oxford History of Dissenting Protestant Traditions series is governed by a motif of migration ('out-of-England'). It first traces organized church traditions that arose in England as Dissenters distanced themselves from a state church defined by diocesan episcopacy, the Book of Common Prayer, the Thirty-Nine Articles, and royal supremacy, but then follows those traditions as they spread beyond England -and also traces newer traditions that emerged downstream in other parts of the world from earlier forms of Dissent. Secondly, it does the same for the doctrines, church practices, stances toward state and society, attitudes toward Scripture, and characteristic patterns of organization that also originated in earlier English Dissent, but that have often defined a trajectory of influence independent ecclesiastical organizations. The Oxford History of Protestant Dissenting Traditions, Volume III considers the Dissenting traditions of the United Kingdom, the British Empire, and the United States in the nineteenth century. It provides an overview of the historiography on Dissent while making the case for seeing Dissenters in different Anglophone connections as interconnected and conscious of their genealogical connections. The nineteenth century saw the creation of a vast Anglo-world which also brought Anglophone Dissent to its apogee. Featuring contributions from a team of leading scholars, the volume illustrates that in most parts of the world the later nineteenth century was marked by a growing enthusiasm for the moral and educational activism of the state which plays against the idea of Dissent as a static, purely negative identity. This collection shows that Dissent was a political and constitutional identity, which was often only strong where a dominant Church of England existed to dissent against.

This study aims to elucidate the origins of how the Pentecostal message came to England, highlighting reasons for its appeal to an initially small constituency, while tracing its emergence in specific religious localities which ranged from Anglican vestry, to mission hall platform, to domestic drawing room. Its chief purpose is to examine the origins and emergence of a distinctively English version of the Pentecostal phenomenon.
