Book excerpt: Interior permanent magnet synchronous machines show a good range of behaviours, which make these kinds of machines good candidates for an electromechanical energy conversion. However, in order to improve their accuracy in their torque responses, the cogging torque and torque ripple phenomena should be mitigated to obtain better performance of the machine. In order to reduce the cogging torque and torque ripple, control techniques as well as geometric parameters of the machine have to be improved. In this thesis, geometric parameters such as the use of the fractional slot windings, the improvement of the pole-arc to pole-pitch ratio and the dimensions of the stator slots are considered for the better minimization of the cogging torque and torque ripple. The results are presented to show the performance of the IPMSM with fractional slot windings as well as the reduction of the cogging torque and torque ripple. Furthermore, four models of IPMSM with fractional and integer slot windings are going to be compared with the aim of the attenuation of the cogging torque phenomenon.

Book excerpt: Permanent Magnet motors are of pertinent use in factory automation, machine tool applications, electric vehicles, robotics applications and many others. Within these industries, the measure of accuracy that is required on a constant basis is stymied by the common obstacle of harmonic ripple in torque, caused by discrepancies in flux within the air-gap of the motors. This ripple reflects in performance of the motor drive and consequently causes a harmonic disturbance in stator current. In order to understand this phenomenon and come about various remedial practices, a detailed study is carried out in this project to investigate the causes of torque ripple in permanent magnet synchronous motor drives, and the methods used in the minimization of this ripple. Minimization of these ripples in torque would prove essential to save erroneous manufacturing deviations that they characterize in the above-mentioned industry applications. It would also help in saving industrial financial resources, increase reliability, as well as save time spent in corrections of these errors. A model is presented in MATLAB/Simulink to implement the Direct Torque approach of ripple minimization.

Book excerpt: This study is about the modeling and control of permanent magnet synchronous motors which are prime candidates for direct drive applications, due to their characteristics like high torque over a wide speed range, high acceleration/deceleration and high torqe/intertia ratio. Direct drive applications solve problems like backlash, friction and coupling effects, but as a result the filtering effect on torque ripple is also lost which may give rise to undesirable performance in robotics. Thus initially in this thesis, the modeling of the PMSM is done to include the space harmonics which give rise to torque ripple. First, past studies on torque ripple suppression are reviewed and new and more efficient methods are presented, offering more generality and flexibility of control. Assuming these methods first, the adaptive model folowing control of PMSM is studied and simulated on a single link manipulator to demonstrate theimproved performance of the system in terms of tracking error and torque ripple suppression. Then, simulation results are obtained for an adaptive feedback linearization scheme developed for the smooth motion of a single link manipulator, using parameter identification. Next, experimental results are obtained for the position control of PMSM using conventional PID, optimal and adaptive control. The test stand is arranged to simulate a single link manipulator with varying inertia and it has been noted that the adaptive control method gives the overall best system responses in terms of error convergence. However, with this control scheme no parameter convergence has been achieved. Thus, in the final part of the thesis simulation results are given using the same adaptive control method but for a persistently exciting reference signal instead of the previous critically damped one and parameter convergence is obtained, as expected.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this work was to investigate a permanent magnet synchronous machine which will be produced by an industry partner of the Institut für Stromrichtertechnik und Elektrische Antriebe (ISEA) an institute of the Rheinisch Westfälisch Technische Hochschule - Aachen, Germany (RWTH). The machine manufacturer noted certain abnormalities with the frequency spectrum produced by an electric machine that they were developing; this problem was brought to ISEA in order to be investigated. My work continues the work of my supervisor, Dipl.- Ing Matthias Bösing, and seeks to further examine the machine for a much wider range of operating points, determine the relationship between current amplitude, harmonics, control angle and rotor position on radial force components of the machine and therefore stresses on the stator; which are the primary causes of electrical machine noise. Rather than investigate acoustic issues in particular, the study was limited to the study of electromagnetically generated radial force ripple, which is the cause of stator deflection modes and therefore the emission of sound waves. The primary results of this thesis researched the operation of a permanent magnet synchronous machine and described its behavior with regards to force, torque, and force and torque ripple and their spectrums versus numerous parameters, including control angle, secant current and rotor position. Next, the work used provided data, literature and the simulation results for this thesis in order to deconstruct the operation regions of the particular machine and therefore link the causes of particular noise spectral components to the operation of the machine. From this it was possible to identify potential ways to eliminate these areas of noise. Following this, the thesis examined a particular abnormality in the torque and force waveforms produced by the machine and devised actions which could correct this abnormality. After identifying this asymmetry, the work explored how to choose an optimal control strategy for eliminating particular harmonics based on the simulated operating points and a desired command torque. Finally, the research built on the previous work by supplementing the method of current harmonic injection for eliminating radial force harmonics in this machine, with a method of determining an optimal operating point before the injection currents are calculated.

Book excerpt: "This dissertation presents a methodology for designing low noise small permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives by addressing the issues of cogging torque, torque ripple, acoustic noise and vibration. The methodology incorporates several pole shaping and magnet skew schemes in different motor topologies with similar envelop dimensions and output characteristics intended for an automotive application. The developed methodology is verified with finite element analysis (FEA) and experiments. A comprehensive design methodology has been developed for obtaining the analytical design of the machine for a given set of output characteristics. Using the FEA, the effects of various magnet shapes and skew on the machine performances (e.g. cogging torque, torque ripple etc.) have been analyzed. The FEA and experimental results show that for certain magnet designs and configurations the skewing does not necessarily reduce the ripple in the electromagnetic torque, but may cause it to increase. An analytical model to predict radial vibration due to magnetic radial pressure on the motor structure has also been developed. This model is used for predicting the noise power level for several motor topologies designed for similar powe level applications. The predicted noise levels are utilized to develop guidelines for selecting motor configurations, internal dimensions and winding types for a low-noise PMSM. The selection of low-noise PMSM is not a straightforward one; rather it is a compromise between torque harmonics and radial vibration of the machines. Some PMSM configurations with less radial vibration might have seen to posses excessive torque ripples and thereby violating the other requirements for the motor to be less noisy. Experiments are conducted to record the torque ripple variation for different magnet shapes and skew in order to validate the results of FE models. The experimental results have successfully correlated with the FE computations."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines (PMSM) have established their predominance over other types of machines in the motor drive industry for the past several decades. High efficiency and high torque and power density, which are the most distinguishing traits of PMSM drives, have enabled PMSM drives to be applied in almost all areas of industry, from home appliances to vehicle tractions. While the permanent magnet, which can be considered as an energy source, is what contributes to the high power density of PMSM; at the same time, it also causes inconvenience since the magnetic field it produces is relatively fixed. For high speed applications, flux-weakening (a.k.a. field-weakening) is almost always required of PMSM drives. When In the flux-weakening region, issues such as limited constant power speed ratio, current control instability, low torque control accuracy still exist, and it calls for advanced control strategies that can improve the performance of PMSM across a wide speed and torque range. The torque and speed control methods proposed in this dissertation provided improvements to existing control strategies of PMSM in the flux-weakening region. To reduce the current oscillation issue related to voltage regulated flux-weakening controller, the proposed modifications redesigned the current trajectory, and extended the operation region to the Maximum Torque per Volt (MTPV) region. To achieve accurate torque control in the flux-weakening region, an open-loop torque controller was proposed. Together with this controller, a novel PMSM characterizing test procedure was developed for the extraction of PMSM machine data. The results from this characterizing test also led to the establishment of a new high fidelity PMSM modeling method that can capture the nonlinearity of PMSM machines. All control strategies proposed in this dissertation apply both in surface-mounted (IPM) and interior-mounted (SPM) permanent magnet synchronous machines.

Book excerpt: In this work, the root causes of ripple production in the PMSM systems controlled by digital DTC schemes are explicitly analyzed and demonstrated. Based on the analysis, three improved DTC schemes are developed to effectively reduce the torque, flux and current ripple levels afflicting the conventional DTC. The improvement strategies in the proposed DTC schemes are generally classified into two categories. First, the space vector modulation (SVM) is integrated into DTC using fewer machine parameters and no proportional-integral (PI) regulators. Second, the hysteresis controller in conventional DTC is modified to develop new switching-table-based DTC following the idea of the conventional DTC. All of the proposed DTC schemes can effectively solve the problems associated with the conventional DTC, i.e., the large ripple levels and high-demand hardware, and provide viable and cost-effective solutions for various industrial PMSM-based applications. The inherent properties of the conventional DTC, such as fast dynamic response, no PI and current regulators, and no coordinate transformations are well preserved.

Book excerpt: This thesis is focused on the comparative investigation on the torque characteristics, both average torque and torque ripple, of permanent magnet (PM) and electrically excited (EE) machines for direct drive applications, which require both high torque density and low torque ripple. The effectiveness of two of the most widely used methods, i.e., rotor shaping and skewing, for torque ripple reduction in EE and PM machines is investigated. It is found that the effectiveness of skewing largely depends on the axial variation of torque ripple phase but less on its magnitude under skewing. It is further found that, in both linear and nonlinear cases, the on-load torque ripple cannot be fully eliminated by skewing one on-load torque ripple period or any other angles, except 360o electrical, which is impractical. The torque ripple may be even increased by skewing, especially when the cogging torque is low and electric loading is high. An improved skewing is developed by optimising both the skewing and current phase advance angles when the conventional skewing method fails. Compared with PM machines, rotor shaping is less effective on torque ripple reduction in EE machines due to the asymmetric magnetic saturation of the stator and rotor cores. However, if rotor skewing is used then EE machines can still achieve the same low level of torque ripple as PM machines. In order to better understand characteristics of on-load torque and hence improve it, the on-load torque separation of PM machines is investigated as well. It is found that the average torque components can be appropriately separated using the virtual work principle but not by the Maxwell stress tensor. For the on-load cogging torque calculation, which is the most difficult challenge for on-load torque ripple separation, a new method is proposed by combining the virtual work principle with an improved frozen permeability method. For torque density optimisation, analytical methods are often desirable. This thesis develops an analytical model for PM machines having external rotor. It is shown that the torque density is maximum when the average airgap flux density is slightly lower than half of the maximum flux density in the stator. In order to compare the torque densities between EE and PM machines, a simplified analytical model of EE machines is developed as well. It is shown that, for EE machines, there is an optimal pole number to maximize the torque densities and it is more advantageous for large volume applications. PM machines can exhibit higher than √2 times torque densities of EE machines. The designs of maximum torque per weight are more cost-effective and result in a significantly larger airgap diameter than the designs of maximum torque per volume.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Permanent-magnet-synchronous-machine (PMSM) drives have been increasingly applied in a variety of industrial applications which require fast dynamic response and accurate control over wide speed ranges. Two control techniques are proposed in this dissertation for PMSM drives, namely flux-weakening control incorporating speed regulation and sliding mode observer with feedback of equivalent control. The research objectives are to extend the operating speed range of the PMSM drive system and improve its control robustness and adaptability to variations of operating conditions as well as dynamic performance. First, a robust flux-weakening control scheme is studied. With a novel current control strategy, the demagnetizing stator current required for the flux-weakening operation can be automatically generated based on the inherent cross-coupling effects in PMSM between its direct-axis and quadrature-axis current in the synchronous reference frame. The proposed control scheme is able to achieve both flux-weakening control and speed regulation simultaneously by using only one speed/flux-weakening controller without the knowledge of accurate machine parameters and dc bus voltage of power inverter. Moreover, no saturation of current regulators occurs under any load conditions, resulting in control robustness in the flux-weakening region. Secondly, a sliding mode observer is developed for estimating rotor position of PMSM without saliency in the implementation of position-sensorless vector control. A concept of feedback of equivalent control is applied to extend the operating range of sliding mode observer and improve its angle-estimation performance. Compared to conventional sliding mode observers, the proposed one features the flexibility to design parameters of sliding mode observer operating in a wide speed range. The estimation error of rotor position can be reduced by properly selecting the feedback gain of equivalent control. In addition, a flux-based sliding mode observer with adaptive feedback gain is investigated. The constant magnitude of equivalent control makes it easier to design the switching gain of discontinuous control in the sliding mode observer. As a result, the problematic chattering phenomenon normally prevailing at low speeds due to high switching gains can be mitigated or even eliminated. The feasibility and effectiveness of the control techniques addressed in this dissertation are verified by both computer simulation and experimental results.
