Download or read book Divine Descent written by Melanie Park and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2024-08-15 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. –Philippians 2:3-4 (NLT) When Jesus descended from the glorious streets of gold in heaven, He landed in a filthy manger and began His mission to save our souls. The Bible is filled with examples of God calling people down from a life of ease at the summit to toil in the fertile valley of humanity. Unlike popular self-help books that promise worldly gain through personal transformation, Divine Descent explores the Biblical invitation to live sacrificially for God. Using personal stories, focused Scriptures, discussion questions, and prayers, Melanie Park explores the transformative spiritual growth available to God’s children when they replace the pursuit of secular summits with an intentional desire to walk with God in a valley of selflessness. God calls people up and down mountainsides for various reasons, but the fact that you’re holding this book might be an indication that God isn’t leading you on another ascent. Instead, He’s inviting you to explore a holy pathway of Divine Descent.
Book Synopsis The End of Satisfaction by : Heather Hirschfeld
Download or read book The End of Satisfaction written by Heather Hirschfeld and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-17 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The End of Satisfaction, Heather Hirschfeld recovers the historical specificity and the conceptual vigor of the term "satisfaction" during the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Focusing on the term’s significance as an organizing principle of Christian repentance, she examines the ways in which Shakespeare and his contemporaries dramatized the consequences of its re- or de-valuation in the process of Reformation doctrinal change. The Protestant theology of repentance, Hirschfeld suggests, underwrote a variety of theatrical plots "to set things right" in a world shorn of the prospect of "making enough" (satisfacere).Hirschfeld’s semantic history traces today’s use of "satisfaction"—as an unexamined measure of inward gratification rather than a finely nuanced standard of relational exchange—to the pressures on legal, economic, and marital discourses wrought by the Protestant rejection of the Catholic sacrament of penance (contrition, confession, satisfaction) and represented imaginatively on the stage. In so doing, it offers fresh readings of the penitential economies of canonical plays including Dr. Faustus, The Revenger’s Tragedy, The Merchant of Venice, and Othello; considers the doctrinal and generic importance of lesser-known plays including Enough Is as Good as a Feast and Love’s Pilgrimage; and opens new avenues into the study of literature and repentance in early modern England.

Book Synopsis The Works of William Perkins, Volume 7 by : William Perkins
Download or read book The Works of William Perkins, Volume 7 written by William Perkins and published by Reformation Heritage Books. This book was released on 2018-12-15 with total page 647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This seventh volume includes three treatises that strike a helpful balance of emphases on theology, history, and practice. A Reformed Catholic exists as a systematic, theological presentation of Perkins’s Reformed soteriology in contrast with the Church of Rome. Perkins’s Problem of the Forged Catholicism is an exercise in historical theology, proving from the primary source documents of church history that the Roman Catholicism articulated at Trent is not supported by the first twelve hundred years of the church’s witness. A Warning Against Idolatry handles worship practices—including liturgies, ceremonies, customs, and rites—concluding that all the externals of worship must be regulated by Scripture in the strictest sense. Taken as a whole, Perkins’s polemical work against the Church of Rome draws a clear dividing line between Roman Catholicism and the Reformed tradition.
