Book excerpt: Leading economists and economic historians offer case studies and theoretical perspectives that fill a longstanding gap in the existing literature on technology-driven industrial development, discussing the interaction of finance and technological innovation in the American economy since the Second Industrial Revolution. Although technological change is vital for economic growth, the interaction of finance and technological innovation is rarely studied. This pioneering volume examines the ways in which innovation is funded in the United States. In case studies and theoretical discussions, leading economists and economic historians analyze how inventors and technologically creative entrepreneurs have raised funds for their projects at different stages of U.S. economic development, beginning with the post-Civil War period of the Second Industrial Revolution. Their discussions point to intriguing insights about how the nature of the technology may influence its financing and, conversely, how the availability of funds influences technological advances. These studies show that over the long history of American technological advancement, inventors and innovators have shown considerable flexibility in finding ways to finance their work. They have moved to cities to find groups of local investors; they have worked for large firms that could tap the securities market for funds; they have looked to the federal government for research and development funding; and they have been financed by the venture capital industry. The studies make it clear that methods of funding innovation--whether it is in the auto industry or information technology--have important implications for both the direction of technological change and the competitive dynamism of the economy.

They were the parents of seven children. Two children died as infants, four immigrated to Cleveland, Ohio as young adults and one remained in Metzenseifen. 1. Anna Maria (1864-1918), married John Streidl in Cleveland; 2. Vincent (1866-1902), who stayed in Metzen- seifen; 3. Lorenz (1870-1953), married 1897 Mary (Anna Maria) Schuer- ger in Cleveland; 4. Anna (1872-1942), married Peter Kraft 1900; 5. John (1876-1964), married twice, died in Lorain, Ohio; 6. Magda- lena (1880-1884); 7. Martin Jacob (1885-1885). The emigrant ancestor of the Schuerger family was Magdalena (Helen) Gedeon, daughter of Gregorius Gedeon and Margaretha Tache, and widow of Martin Schürger (1830-1880). Magdalena immigrated to Cleveland, Ohio with her children shortly after her husband Martin Schürger died. Her eldest daughter Anna (1854-1931) with her husband Peter Gedeon (1850-1906) had already been living in Cleveland since 1874. Descendants live in Ohio, California and elsewhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vivid picture of the evolution of one of America's many vital ethnic voices. The nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were times of change within the United States. The influx of immigrants gave the United States a new face as well as a new culture. In Ties That Bind, Ties That Divide, Juliana Puskás, a prominent scholar on immigration, examines the Hungarian-American experience. Often overshadowed by the stories of other immigrant communities, the Hungarian community is finally brought to the forefront in Puskás's thorough discussion. Beginning with a look at the semifeudal state of mid-nineteenth century Hungarian society, the author provides a historical context within which to place the emigrants. She goes on to reveal the gradual process by which immigrants built diverse communities and became Hungarian-Americans, rather than just Hungarians in America. Puskás also chronicles the role of Hungarian-Americans in the Cold War, focusing on the displaced persons who arrived immediately after World War II. Ties That Bind, Ties That Divide melds a lucid, thorough appraisal of the Hungarian migration with first-hand experiences, interviews, and observations, skillfully redressing the general ignorance of the Hungarian-American experience.
