Book excerpt: This textbook is devoted to the study of some simple but representative nonlinear boundary value problems by topological methods. The approach is elementary, with only a few model ordinary differential equations and applications, chosen in such a way that the student may avoid most of the technical difficulties and focus on the application of topological methods. Only basic knowledge of general analysis is needed, making the book understandable to non-specialists. The main topics in the study of boundary value problems are present in this text, so readers with some experience in functional analysis or differential equations may also find some elements that complement and enrich their tools for solving nonlinear problems. In comparison with other texts in the field, this one has the advantage of a concise and informal style, thus allowing graduate and undergraduate students to enjoy some of the beauties of this interesting branch of mathematics. Exercises and examples are included throughout the book, providing motivation for the reader.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on nonlinear boundary value problems and the aspects of nonlinear analysis which are necessary to their study. The authors first give a comprehensive introduction to the many different classical methods from nonlinear analysis, variational principles, and Morse theory. They then provide a rigorous and detailed treatment of the relevant areas of nonlinear analysis with new applications to nonlinear boundary value problems for both ordinary and partial differential equations. Recent results on the existence and multiplicity of critical points for both smooth and nonsmooth functional, developments on the degree theory of monotone type operators, nonlinear maximum and comparison principles for p-Laplacian type operators, and new developments on nonlinear Neumann problems involving non-homogeneous differential operators appear for the first time in book form. The presentation is systematic, and an extensive bibliography and a remarks section at the end of each chapter highlight the text. This work will serve as an invaluable reference for researchers working in nonlinear analysis and partial differential equations as well as a useful tool for all those interested in the topics presented.

Book excerpt: The papers collected in this volume are contributions to the 33rd session of the Seminaire de Mathematiques Superieures (SMS) on "Topological Methods in Differential Equations and Inclusions". This session of the SMS took place at the Universite de Montreal in July 1994 and was a NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI). The aim of the ASI was to bring together a considerable group of young researchers from various parts of the world and to present to them coherent surveys of some of the most recent advances in this area of Nonlinear Analysis. During the meeting 89 mathematicians from 20 countries have had the opportunity to get acquainted with various aspects of the subjects treated in the lectures as well as the chance to exchange ideas and learn about new problems arising in the field. The main topics teated in this ASI were the following: Fixed point theory for single- and multi-valued mappings including topological degree and its generalizations, and topological transversality theory; existence and multiplicity results for ordinary differential equations and inclusions; bifurcation and stability problems; ordinary differential equations in Banach spaces; second order differential equations on manifolds; the topological structure of the solution set of differential inclusions; effects of delay perturbations on dynamics of retarded delay differential equations; dynamics of reaction diffusion equations; non smooth critical point theory and applications to boundary value problems for quasilinear elliptic equations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the study of positive solutions to indefinite problems. The monograph intelligibly provides an extensive overview of topological methods and introduces new ideas and results. Sticking to the one-dimensional setting, the author shows that compelling and substantial research can be obtained and presented in a penetrable way. In particular, the book focuses on second order nonlinear differential equations. It analyzes the Dirichlet, Neumann and periodic boundary value problems associated with the equation and provides existence, nonexistence and multiplicity results for positive solutions. The author proposes a new approach based on topological degree theory that allows him to answer some open questions and solve a conjecture about the dependence of the number of positive solutions on the nodal behaviour of the nonlinear term of the equation. The new technique developed in the book gives, as a byproduct, infinitely many subharmonic solutions and globally defined positive solutions with chaotic behaviour. Furthermore, some future directions for research, open questions and interesting, unexplored topics of investigation are proposed.

Book excerpt: The theory of nonlinear elliptic equations is currently one of the most actively developing branches of the theory of partial differential equations. This book investigates boundary value problems for nonlinear elliptic equations of arbitrary order. In addition to monotone operator methods, a broad range of applications of topological methods to nonlinear differential equations is presented: solvability, estimation of the number of solutions, and the branching of solutions of nonlinear equations. Skrypnik establishes, by various procedures, a priori estimates and the regularity of solutions of nonlinear elliptic equations of arbitrary order. Also covered are methods of homogenization of nonlinear elliptic problems in perforated domains. The book is suitable for use in graduate courses in differential equations and nonlinear functional analysis.

Book excerpt: The book is devoted to the topological fixed point theory both for single-valued and multivalued mappings in locally convex spaces, including its application to boundary value problems for ordinary differential equations (inclusions) and to (multivalued) dynamical systems. It is the first monograph dealing with the topological fixed point theory in non-metric spaces. Although the theoretical material was tendentiously selected with respect to applications, the text is self-contained. Therefore, three appendices concerning almost-periodic and derivo-periodic single-valued (multivalued) functions and (multivalued) fractals are supplied to the main three chapters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, which is the first of two volumes, presents, in a unique way, some of the most relevant research tools of modern analysis. This work empowers young researchers with all the necessary techniques to explore the various subfields of this broad subject, and introduces relevant frameworks where these tools can be immediately deployed. Volume I starts with the foundations of modern analysis. The first three chapters are devoted to topology, measure theory, and functional analysis. Chapter 4 offers a comprehensive analysis of the main function spaces, while Chapter 5 covers more concrete subjects, like multivariate analysis, which are closely related to applications and more difficult to find in compact form. Chapter 6 deals with smooth and non-smooth calculus of functions; Chapter 7 introduces certain important classes of nonlinear operators; and Chapter 8 complements the previous three chapters with topics of variational analysis. Each chapter of this volume finishes with a list of problems – handy for understanding and self-study – and historical notes that give the reader a more vivid picture of how the theory developed. Volume II consists of various applications using the tools and techniques developed in this volume. By offering a clear and wide picture of the tools and applications of modern analysis, this work can be of great benefit not only to mature graduate students seeking topics for research, but also to experienced researchers with an interest in this vast and rich field of mathematics.

This book was released on 2004-07-27 with total page 790 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting in the early 1980s, people using the tools of nonsmooth analysis developed some remarkable nonsmooth extensions of the existing critical point theory. Until now, however, no one had gathered these tools and results together into a unified, systematic survey of these advances. This book fills that gap. It provides a complete presentation of nonsmooth critical point theory, then goes beyond it to study nonlinear second order boundary value problems. The authors do not limit their treatment to problems in variational form. They also examine in detail equations driven by the p-Laplacian, its generalizations, and their spectral properties, studying a wide variety of problems and illustrating the powerful tools of modern nonlinear analysis. The presentation includes many recent results, including some that were previously unpublished. Detailed appendices outline the fundamental mathematical tools used in the book, and a rich bibliography forms a guide to the relevant literature. Most books addressing critical point theory deal only with smooth problems, linear or semilinear problems, or consider only variational methods or the tools of nonlinear operators. Nonsmooth Critical Point Theory and Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems offers a comprehensive treatment of the subject that is up-to-date, self-contained, and rich in methods for a wide variety of problems.
