Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Man perishes; his corpse turns to dust; all his relatives pass away. But writings make him remembered' In ancient Egypt, words had magical power. Inscribed on tombs and temple walls, coffins and statues, or inked onto papyri, hieroglyphs give us a unique insight into the life of the Egyptian mind. Egyptologist Toby Wilkinson has freshly translated a rich and diverse range of ancient Egyptian writings into modern English, including tales of shipwreck and wonder, obelisk inscriptions, mortuary spells, funeral hymns, songs, satires and advice on life from a pharaoh to his son. Spanning over two millennia, this is the essential guide to a complex, sophisticated culture. Translated with an Introduction by Toby Wilkinson
Book Synopsis A History of World Egyptology by : Andrew Bednarski
Download or read book A History of World Egyptology written by Andrew Bednarski and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-05-27 with total page 1135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of World Egyptology is a ground-breaking reference work that traces the study of ancient Egypt over the past 150 years. Global in purview, it enlarges our understanding of how and why people have looked, and continue to look, into humankind's distant past through the lens of the enduring allure of ancient Egypt. Written by an international team of scholars, the volume investigates how territories around the world have engaged with, and have been inspired by, ancient Egypt and its study, and how that engagement has evolved over time. Chapters present a specific territory from different perspectives, including institutional and national, while examining a range of transnational links as well. The volume thus touches on multiple strands of scholarship, embracing not only Egyptology, but also social history, the history of science and reception studies. It will appeal to amateurs and professionals with an interest in the histories of Egypt, archaeology and science.
Book Synopsis The Writing of History in Ancient Egypt During the First Millennium BC (ca.1070-180 BC) by : Roberto B. Gozzoli
Download or read book The Writing of History in Ancient Egypt During the First Millennium BC (ca.1070-180 BC) written by Roberto B. Gozzoli and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Royal inscriptions, Herodotus and Manetho have been fundemental in order to reconstruct the chronology and history of ancient Egypt since Champillon's times. Without denying the righteousness of the approach, historical and pseudo-historical material are here analysed as historical documents per se, completely disregarding their value for the histoire événementielle . Genre and format of royal inscriptions become important in order to establish the power of the tradition, as the entire group of historical sources mentioned embody hopes, fears, as well as social and cultural conflicts existing in Egyptian society at the times they were written.
Book Synopsis Luxury Arts of the Renaissance by : Marina Belozerskaya
Download or read book Luxury Arts of the Renaissance written by Marina Belozerskaya and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2005-10-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today we associate the Renaissance with painting, sculpture, and architecture—the “major” arts. Yet contemporaries often held the “minor” arts—gem-studded goldwork, richly embellished armor, splendid tapestries and embroideries, music, and ephemeral multi-media spectacles—in much higher esteem. Isabella d’Este, Marchesa of Mantua, was typical of the Italian nobility: she bequeathed to her children precious stone vases mounted in gold, engraved gems, ivories, and antique bronzes and marbles; her favorite ladies-in-waiting, by contrast, received mere paintings. Renaissance patrons and observers extolled finely wrought luxury artifacts for their exquisite craftsmanship and the symbolic capital of their components; paintings and sculptures in modest materials, although discussed by some literati, were of lesser consequence. This book endeavors to return to the mainstream material long marginalized as a result of historical and ideological biases of the intervening centuries. The author analyzes how luxury arts went from being lofty markers of ascendancy and discernment in the Renaissance to being dismissed as “decorative” or “minor” arts—extravagant trinkets of the rich unworthy of the status of Art. Then, by re-examining the objects themselves and their uses in their day, she shows how sumptuous creations constructed the world and taste of Renaissance women and men.
