Book excerpt: Understanding the behavior of matter at ultra-high density such as neutron stars require the knowledge of ground state properties of Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) at finite chemical potential. However, this task has turned out to be very difficult because of two main reasons: 1) QCD may still be strongly coupled at those regimes making perturbative calculations unreliable and 2) QCD at finite density suffers from the sign problem that makes the use of lattice simulation problematic and it even affects phenomenological models. In the first part of this thesis, we show that the sign problem in analytical calculations of finite density models can be solved by considering the CK-symmetric, where C is charge conjugation and K is complex conjugation, complex saddle points of the effective action. We then explore the properties and consequences of such complex saddle points at non-zero temperature and density. Due to CK symmetry, the mass matrix eigenvalues in these models are not always real but can be complex, which results in damped oscillation of the density-density correlation function, a new feature of finite density models. To address the generality of such behavior, we next consider a lattice model of QCD with static quarks at strong-coupling. Computation of the mass spectrum confirms the existence of complex eigenvalues in much of temperature-chemical potential plane. This provides an independent confirmation of our results obtained using phenomenological models of QCD.The existence of regions in parameter space where density-density correlation function exhibit damped oscillation is one of the hallmarks of typical liquid-gas system. The formalism developed to tackle the sign problem in QCD models actually gives a simple understanding for the existence of such behavior in liquid-gas system. To this end, we develop a generic field theoretic model for the treatment of liquid-gas phase transition. An effective field theory at finite density derived from a fundamental four dimensional field theory turns out to be complex but CK symmetric. The existence of CK symmetry results in complex mass eigenvalues, which in turn leads to damped oscillatory behavior of the density-density correlation function. In the last part of this thesis, we study the effect of large amplitude density oscillations on the transport properties of superfluid nuclear matter. In nuclear matter at neutron-star densities and temperature, Cooper pairing leads to the formations of a gap in the nucleon excitation spectra resulting in exponentially strong Boltzmann suppression of many transport coefficients. Previous calculations have shown evidence that density oscillations of sufficiently large amplitude can overcome this suppression for flavor-changing [beta] processes via the mechanism of "gap-bridging". We address the simplifications made in that initial work, and show that gap bridging can counteract Boltzmann suppression of neutrino emissivity for the realistic case of modified Urca processes in matter with 3P2 neutron pairing.

Book excerpt: The articles in this book review recent developments in the microscopic theory of optical and electronic semiconductor properties. Many advances in this active field are intimately related to the work of Hartmut Haug and his coworkers. At the occasion of Haug's 60th birthday, a number of current and/or former members of his research team review the current state-of-the-art. Topics include the quantum kinetics of electrons, phonons and photons, coherent optical effects, quantum transport, ballistic motion, microscopic semiconductor laser theory with special emphasis on microlasers, symmetry aspects of laser excited semiconductors, as well as a review of the two-dimensional Wigner crystal in a strong magnetic field. The articles present the material in sufficient detail to be understandable by advanced graduate students and researchers who have a good background in quantum mechanics.

Perturbative expansions do not work at large distances for QCD: the hadron spectrum, the confinement of colour, its deconfinement at high temperatures and the breaking of chiral symmetry all need nonperturbative methods of analysis. Sum rules, chiral perturbation theory and the formulation of QCD on a lattice are some of the tools used to test models, like the stochastic vacuum, the instanton liquid or the consideration of monopoles in the vacuum to produce dual superconductivity and confinement. The work covers different points of view and critical comparison between the different approaches. It can be considered a good reference text.

Book excerpt: Many facets of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) are relevant to the in-depth discussion of theoretical and experimental aspects of high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions. Exciting phenomena are being discovered in such ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions, notably the increasingly important role of deconfined quark-gluon matter created in the early stage. The book contains lectures on the physics of hot dense matter, the expected phase transitions and colour superconductivity, recent developments in the treatment of nonlinear effects at large parton densities, fundamental issues in the phenomenology of ultrarelativistic heavy collisions. The latest data on heavy ion collisions are also presented. A unique collection of lectures on the many facets of QCD relevant to the physics of hot dense matter.

Book excerpt: The symposium and workshop OC Continuous Advances in QCD / ArkadyfestOCO was the fifth in the series of meetings organized by the William I Fine Theoretical Physics Institute at the University of Minnesota. This meeting brought together leading researchers in high-energy physics to exchange the latest ideas in QCD and gauge theories at strong coupling at large. It honored the 60th birthday of Professor Arkady Vainshtein, and the papers included in this proceedings volume also look back on the history of the subjects in which Arkady played such a central role: applications of PCAC, penguins, invisible axions, QCD sum rules, exact beta functions, condensates in supersymmetry, powerful heavy quark expansions, and new anomalies in 2D SUSY theories. The current status of these subjects was summarized in several excellent presentations that also outlined a historical perspective. A number of papers from leading researchers in the field present new developments and ideas in modern areas of study, such as the cosmological constant problem in extra-dimension theories, supersymmetric monopoles, solitons and confinement, AdS/CFT correspondence, and high density QCD. Contents: Perturbative and Nonperturbative QCD: Electromagnetic Form Factor of the Pion (H Leutwyler); Multiple Uses of the QCD Instantons (E V Shuryak); CP-Violation and Mixing in Charmed Mesons (A A Petrov); General Aspects of QCD and the Standard Model: Probing New Physics: From Charm to Superstrings (M K Gaillard); Dynamics of QCD in a Strong Magnetic Field (V A Miransky); On Mixed Phases in Gauge Theories (V L Chernyak); Gauge Dynamics at High Temperature and Density: What QCD Tells Us About Nature (F Wilczek); Domain Walls and Strings in Dense Quark Matter (A R Zhitnitsky); Topological Field Configurations, Dynamics in Supersymmetric Models, and Theoretical Issues: Non-Abelian Monopoles, Vortices and Confinement (K Konishi); Nonperturbative Solution of Supersymmetric Gauge Theories (J R Hiller); Testing ADS/CFT Correspondence with Wilson Loops (K Zarembo); Cosmology and Axions: Axions: Past, Present, and Future (M Srednicki); QCD Vacuum and Axions: What''s Happening? Book excerpt: The authors report the current status of the systematic studies of the QCD thermodynamics by lattice QCD simulations with two flavors of improved Wilson quarks. They evaluate the critical temperature of two flavor QCD in the chiral limit at zero chemical potential and show the preliminary result. Also they discuss fluctuations at none-zero temperature and density by calculating the quark number and isospin susceptibilities and their derivatives with respect to chemical potential.

Book excerpt: With the operation of the RHIC heavy ion program, the theoretical understanding of QCD at finite temperature and density has become increasingly important. Though QCD at finite temperature has been extensively studied using lattice Monte-Carlo simulations over the past twenty years, most physical questions relevant for RHIC (and future) heavy ion experiments remain open. In lattice QCD at finite temperature and density there have been at least two major advances in recent years. First, for the first time calculations of real time quantities, like meson spectral functions have become available. Second, the lattice study of the QCD phase diagram and equation of state have been extended to finite baryon density by several groups. Both issues were extensively discussed in the course of the workshop. A real highlight was the study of the QCD phase diagram in (T, [mu])-plane by Z. Fodor and S. Katz and the determination of the critical end-point for the physical value of the pion mass. This was the first time such lattice calculations at, the physical pion mass have been performed. Results by Z Fodor and S. Katz were obtained using a multi-parameter re-weighting method. Other determinations of the critical end point were also presented, in particular using a Taylor expansion around [mu] = 0 (Bielefeld group, Ejiri et al.) and using analytic continuation from imaginary chemical potential (Ph. de Forcrand and O. Philipsen). The result based on Taylor expansion agrees within errors with the new prediction of Z. Fodor and S. Katz, while methods based on analytic continuation still predict a higher value for the critical baryon density. Most of the thermodynamics studies in full QCD (including those presented at this workshop) have been performed using quite coarse lattices, a = 0.2-0.3 fm. Therefore one may worry about cutoff effects in different thermodynamic quantities, like the transition temperature T{sub tr}. At the workshop U. Heller presented a study of the transition temperature for three different lattice spacings and performed a continuum extrapolation of T{sub tr} for the first time. Lattice calculations of the meson spectral functions were presented by M. Asakawa, S. Datta, E. Laermann and H. Matsufuru. These show that charmonia ground states ([eta]{sub c} and J/[psi]) continue to exist in the plasma at least up to a temperature of 1.7 T{sub tr}. At what temperature charmonia states cease to exist is not yet clear. Calculations presented by M. Asakawa show dissolution of the J/[psi] at T = 1.7 T{sub tr}, while the analysis presented H. Matsufuru provided evidence that ground state charmonia still exist at this temperature. S. Datta argued that the ground state charmonia is likely to dissolve only for temperatures T> 2.25 T{sub tr}, while the P-states are dissociated at, 1.1 T{sub tr}. It is also very interesting that, even in the case of light quarks, meson spectral functions show a resonance-like structure in the plasma phase (talk by E. Laermann). Finally attempts to calculate transport properties in the Quark Gluon Plasma were presented by S. Gupta. The workshop devoted special attention to the finite temperature modification of inter-quark forces and color screening, another area where considerable progress has been made in recent years (talks by 0. Kaczmarek, K. Petrov, O. Philipsen and F. Zantow). Many other new theoretical developments which cannot be discussed here were also presented on the workshop. Altogether the workshop was a great success, for which we thank all the participants.

Book excerpt: We present recent results on thermodynamics of QCD with almost physical light quark masses and a physical strange quark mass value. These calculations have been performed with an improved staggered action especially designed for finite temperature lattice QCD. In detail we present a calculation of the transition temperature, using a combined chiral and continuum extrapolation. Furthermore we present preliminary results on the interaction measure and energy density at almost realistic quark masses. Finally we discuss the response of the pressure to a finite quark chemical potential. Within the Taylor expansion formalism we calculate quark number susceptibilities and leading order corrections to finite chemical potential. This is particularly useful for mapping out the critical region in the QCD phase diagram.

Book excerpt: The problem of quark confinement is one of the classic unsolved problems of particle physics and is fundamental to our understanding of the physics of the strong interaction and the behaviour of non-Abelian gauge theories in general. The confinement problem is also are area in which concepts from topology and techniques of computational physics both find important applications. This volume contains a snapshot of current research in this field as of January 2002. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of topological field configurations such as centre vortices and monopoles in proposed confinement mechanisms. Other topics covered include colour superconductivity, instantons and chiral symmetry breaking, matrix models and the construction of chiral gauge theories. This book was released on 2002-09-23 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the unique possibility of tackling the problem of hadronic deconfinement from different perspectives. After general introductions to the physical issues, from both the theoretical and the experimental point of view, the book presents the most recent expertise on field theory approaches to the QCD phase diagram, many-body techniques and applications, the dynamics of phase transitions, and phenomenological analysis of relativistic heavy ion collisions. One of the major goals of this book is to promote interchange among those fields of research, which have traditionally been cultivated by different communities of physicists. The contributions in the book help in obtaining deep comprehension of this new state of matter, a system of deconfined quarks and gluons. At the same time the book offers a few examples of how the seeds of the deconfined state are looked for in the phenomenological analysis of the observables measured in relativistic heavy ion collisions. The main topics are dealt with in a pedagogical style, suitable for beginners as well as experienced researchers.
