Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Galileo Unbound traces the journey that brought us from Galileo's law of free fall to today's geneticists measuring evolutionary drift, entangled quantum particles moving among many worlds, and our lives as trajectories traversing a health space with thousands of dimensions. Remarkably, common themes persist that predict the evolution of species as readily as the orbits of planets or the collapse of stars into black holes. This book tells the history of spaces of expanding dimension and increasing abstraction and how they continue today to give new insight into the physics of complex systems. Galileo published the first modern law of motion, the Law of Fall, that was ideal and simple, laying the foundation upon which Newton built the first theory of dynamics. Early in the twentieth century, geometry became the cause of motion rather than the result when Einstein envisioned the fabric of space-time warped by mass and energy, forcing light rays to bend past the Sun. Possibly more radical was Feynman's dilemma of quantum particles taking all paths at once — setting the stage for the modern fields of quantum field theory and quantum computing. Yet as concepts of motion have evolved, one thing has remained constant, the need to track ever more complex changes and to capture their essence, to find patterns in the chaos as we try to predict and control our world.
Book Synopsis Topics from One-Dimensional Dynamics by : Karen M. Brucks
Download or read book Topics from One-Dimensional Dynamics written by Karen M. Brucks and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-06-28 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One-dimensional dynamics owns many deep results and avenues of active mathematical research. Numerous inroads to this research exist for the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate student. This book provides glimpses into one-dimensional dynamics with the hope that the results presented illuminate the beauty and excitement of the field. Much of this material is covered nowhere else in textbook format, some are mini new research topics in themselves, and novel connections are drawn with other research areas both inside and outside the text. The material presented here is not meant to be approached in a linear fashion. Readers are encouraged to pick and choose favourite topics. Anyone with an interest in dynamics, novice or expert alike, will find much of interest within.
Book Synopsis Topics in Gravitational Dynamics by : Daniel Benest
Download or read book Topics in Gravitational Dynamics written by Daniel Benest and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-12-14 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This set of lectures collects surveys of open problems in celestial dynamics and dynamical astronomy applied to solar, extra-solar and galactic systems. The discovery and thus the possibility to study many new extra-solar planetary systems have spurred new developments in the field and enabled the testing and enlargement of the domains of validity of theoretical predictions through the Nekhoroshev theorem.
Book Synopsis Topics in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics: Atmospheric Dynamics, Dynamo Theory, and Climate Dynamics by : M. Ghil
Download or read book Topics in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics: Atmospheric Dynamics, Dynamo Theory, and Climate Dynamics written by M. Ghil and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vigorous stirring of a cup of tea gives rise, as we all know, to interesting fluid dynamical phenomena, some of which are very hard to explain. In this book our "cup of tea" contains the currents of the Earth's atmosphere, oceans, mantle, and fluid core. Our goal is to under stand the basic physical processes which are most important in describing what we observe, directly or indirectly, in these complex systems. While in many respects our understanding is measured by the ability to predict, the focus here will be on relatively simple models which can aid our physical intuition by suggesting useful mathematical methods of investiga tion. These elementary models can be viewed as part of a hierarchy of models of increasing complexity, moving toward those which might be use fully predictive. The discussion in this book will deal primarily with the Earth. Interplanetary probes of Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn have revealed many exciting phenomena which bear on geophysical fluid dynamics. They have also enabled us to see the effect of changing the values of certain parameters, such as gravity and rotation rate, on geophysical flows. On the other hand, satellite observations of our own planet on a daily and hourly basis have turned it into a unique laboratory for the study of fluid motions on a scale never dreamt of before: the motion of cyclones can be observed via satellite just as wing tip vortices are studied in a wind tunnel.
Book Synopsis Introduction to Modern Dynamics by : David D. Nolte
Download or read book Introduction to Modern Dynamics written by David D. Nolte and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019-08-29 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The best parts of physics are the last topics that our students ever see. These are the exciting new frontiers of nonlinear and complex systems that are at the forefront of university research and are the basis of many high-tech businesses. Topics such as traffic on the World Wide Web, the spread of epidemics through globally-mobile populations, or how the synchronization of global economies are governed by universal principles just as profound as Newton's laws. Nonetheless, the conventional university physics curriculum reserves most of these topics for graduate study because of the assumed need for advanced mathematics. However, by using only linear algebra and calculus, combined with exploratory computer simulations, all of these topics become accessible to advanced undergraduate students. The structure of this book combines the three main topics of modern dynamics - chaos theory, dynamics on complex networks, and general relativity - into a coherent framework. By taking a geometric view of physics, concentrating on the time evolution of physical systems as trajectories through abstract spaces, these topics share a common and simple mathematical language through which any student can gain a unified physical intuition. Given the growing importance of complex dynamical systems in many areas of science and technology, this text provides students with an up-to-date foundation for their future careers. This second edition has an updated introductory chapter and has added key topics to help students prepare for their GRE physics subject exam. It also has expanded chapters on Hamiltonian dynamics, Hamiltonian chaos, and Econophysics, while increasing the number of homework problems at the end of each chapter. The second edition is designed to fulfill the textbook needs of any advanced undergraduate course in mechanics.
