Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aimed toward researchers and graduate students familiar with elements of functional analysis, linear algebra, and general topology; this book contains a general study of modulars, modular spaces, and metric modular spaces. Modulars may be thought of as generalized velocity fields and serve two important purposes: generate metric spaces in a unified manner and provide a weaker convergence, the modular convergence, whose topology is non-metrizable in general. Metric modular spaces are extensions of metric spaces, metric linear spaces, and classical modular linear spaces. The topics covered include the classification of modulars, metrizability of modular spaces, modular transforms and duality between modular spaces, metric and modular topologies. Applications illustrated in this book include: the description of superposition operators acting in modular spaces, the existence of regular selections of set-valued mappings, new interpretations of spaces of Lipschitzian and absolutely continuous mappings, the existence of solutions to ordinary differential equations in Banach spaces with rapidly varying right-hand sides.

This book was released on 1990 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurement error models describe functional relationships among variables observed, subject to random errors of measurement. Examples include linear and nonlinear errors-in-variables regression models, calibration and inverse regression models, factor analysis models, latent structure models, and simultaneous equations models. Such models are used in a wide variety of areas, including medicine, the life sciences, econometrics, chemometrics, geology, sample surveys, and time series. Although the problem of estimating the parameters of such models exists in most scientific fields, there is a need for more sources that treat measurement error models as an area of statistical methodology. This volume is designed to address that need. This book contains the proceedings of an AMS-IMS-SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference in the Mathematical Sciences on Statistical Analysis of Measurement Error Models and Applications. The conference was held at Humboldt State University in Arcata, California in June 1989. The papers in this volume fall into four broad groups. The first group treats general aspects of the measurement problem and features a discussion of the history of measurement error models. The second group focuses on inference for the nonlinear measurement error model, an active area of research which generated considerable interest at the conference. The third group of papers examines computational aspects of estimation, while the final set studies estimators possessing robustness properties against deviations from common model assumptions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1984 classification of the finite-dimensional restricted simple Lie algebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>7$ provided the impetus for a Special Year of Lie Algebras, held at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, during 1987-88. Work done during the Special Year and afterward put researchers much closer toward a solution of the long-standing problem of determining the finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>7$. This volume contains the proceedings of a conference on Lie algebras and related topics, held in May 1988 to mark the end of the Special Year. The conference featured lectures on Lie algebras of prime characteristic, algebraic groups, combinatorics and representation theory, and Kac-Moody and Virasoro algebras. Many facets of recent research on Lie theory are reflected in the papers presented here, testifying to the richness and diversity of this topic.

Book excerpt: Fixed point theory touches on many areas of mathematics, such as general topology, algebraic topology, nonlinear functional analysis, and ordinary and partial differential equations and serves as a useful tool in applied mathematics. This book represents the proceedings of an informal three-day seminar held during the International Congress of Mathematicians in Berkeley in 1986. Bringing together topologists and analysts concerned with the study of fixed points of continuous functions, the seminar provided a forum for presentation of recent developments in several different areas. The topics covered include both topological fixed point theory from both the algebraic and geometric viewpoints, the fixed point theory of nonlinear operators on normed linear spaces and its applications, and the study of solutions of ordinary and partial differential equations by fixed point theory methods.Because the papers range from broad expositions to specialized research papers, the book provides readers with a good overview of the subject as well as a more detailed look at some specialized recent advances.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all modern mathematical forms, number theory is one of the earliest to be explored in China and is the one to which the Chinese have made their greatest contributions. Yan Wu-zhi first introduced number theory into China in the 1920s. Particularly influential in the field was Hua Loo-keng, who studied with G. H. Hardy and made significant contributions in the areas estimating complete exponential sums, Waring's problems, Tarry's problems, and Vinogradov's method. Interest in number theory continued to flourish following the founding of the People's Republic of China. The most noted accomplishments by Chinese mathematicians were focused on the solution of Goldbach's Conjecture and on the sieve method. Although the Cultural Revolution interrupted research in number theory for more than 10 years, the field is now growing in China.A number of universities now have advanced programs in the subject and a wide variety of topics, including the applications of number theory. This volume contains nine survey articles and three articles on current research. The collection emphasizes the accomplishments of Chinese number theorists during 1949-1979, a period when correspondence between China and other countries was discouraged. The collection is intended not only to survey the significant contributions of Chinese mathematicians, but also to reflect the latest developments and current state of research in number theory in China.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1989 marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great Danish mathematician Hieronymus Georg Zeuthen. Zeuthen's name is known to every algebraic geometer because of his discovery of a basic invariant of surfaces. However, he also did fundamental research in intersection theory, enumerative geometry, and the projective geometry of curves and surfaces. Zeuthen's extraordinary devotion to his subject, his characteristic depth, thoroughness, and clarity of thought, and his precise and succinct writing style are truly inspiring. During the past ten years or so, algebraic geometers have reexamined Zeuthen's work, drawing from it inspiration and new directions for development in the field. The 1989 Zeuthen Symposium, held in the summer of 1989 at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Copenhagen, provided a historic opportunity for mathematicians to gather and examine those areas in contemporary mathematical research which have evolved from Zeuthen's fruitful ideas. This volume, containing papers presented during the symposium, as well as others inspired by it, illuminates some currently active areas of research in enumerative algebraic geometry.
