Book excerpt: Fermilab's Tevatron accelerator is recently performing at record luminosities that enables a program systematically addressing the physics of top quarks. The CDF collaboration has analyzed up to 5 fb−1 of proton anti-proton collisions from the Tevatron at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The large datasets available allow to push top quark measurements to higher and higher precision and have lead to the recent observation of electroweak single top quark production at the Tevatron. This article reviews recent results on top quark physics from the CDF experiment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CDF and D0 have published or submitted for publication eleven papers [1-11] that include direct experimental measurements of the top quark mass. Each experiment has found that the lepton+jets channel [1,5,6,9,10,11,12] gives the most precise result. However, CDF and D0 have also measured the top quark mass in other decay topologies. Both D0 [2,6] and CDF [3,4] have published additional results in the dilepton channels, while CDF [8] has published a result in the all-hadronic channel. Our aim in this note is to reduce the overall uncertainty on the top quark mass measurement by combining the most recent and final of these measurements [1,2,3,7,8]. This note combines the mass from the five separate measurements taking into account the statistical and systematic uncertainties as well as the correlations in the systematic uncertainties. The final Tevatron top mass based on Run 1 data is m{sub t} = 174.3 " 3.2(stat) " 4.0(syst) GeV/c2. Combining the statistical and systematic uncertainties, the top mass is m{sub t} = 174.3 " 5.1 GeV/c2.

In this paper, they present results of measurements of top quark properties, as well as tests for the production mechanism of the top quark. They also describe CDF latest searches for beyond Standard Model couplings of the top quark. Finally, they present the most recent searches for direct production of new particles in the collected data samples.

The top-quark mass is now known with a precision of 1.3%--a 20% improvement relative to the previous combination.

We present recent results from CDF on top-quark physics based on 100-200 pb−1 of p{bar p} collision data. We have measured the t{bar t} cross section in different decay modes using several different techniques, and are beginning our studies of top-quark properties. New analyses for this conference include a measurement of [sigma]{sub t{bar t}} in the lepton-plus-jets channel using a neural net to distinguish signal and background events, and measurements of top-quark branching fractions.

The CDF and D0 top mass averages, based on [approx]100 pb[sup -1] of data collected by each experiment in Run-I, and obtained from a set of selected measurements in several channels are M[sub t] = 176:0 [plus-minus] 4:0(stat) [plus-minus] 5:1(syst) GeV/c[sup 2] and M[sub t] = 172:1 [plus-minus] 5:2(stat) [plus-minus] 4:9(syst) GeV/c[sup 2], respectively. The combined Tevatron top quark mass is M[sub t] = 174:3 [plus-minus]3:2(stat) [plus-minus]4:0(syst) GeV/c]sup 2], where the correlations between CDF and D0 averages were taken into account. The CDF measurement of the t[bar t] cross section (assuming M[sub t] = 175 GeV/c[sup 2]) is [sigma][sub tt] = 7.6[sup 1.8][sub 1.5] pb, and the D0 value (assuming M[sub t] = 172.1 GeV/c[sup 2]) is [sigma][sub tt] = 5:9 [plus-minus] 1:7 pb. In anticipation of the much increased statistics in Run-II, the fact that top quark physics is one of the best windows to new physics beyond the Standard Model is emphasized.

Book excerpt: We present the latest results on the top quark obtained by the CDF experiment using a data sample of about 110 pb[sup -1]. The data sample has been collected at the FermiLab Tevatron Collider with p[anti p] collisions at[radical]s= 1.8 TeV. We briefly describe the candidate event selection and then discuss the production cross section determination and the mass measurement. Combining the results from the channels with at least one W decaying leptonically into an electron or muon, we measure[sigma][sub t[anti t]]= 7.5[sup+1.9][sub -1.6] pb. Our best measured value for the top mass gives M[sub t]= 176.8[+-]6.5 GeV/c[sup 2]. We also report on the observation of t[anti t] production in the all hadronic decay channel using kinematic selection and b identification, and in the channel containing one hadronically decaying[tau] lepton. Finally we discuss the kinematics of top events and measure the matrix element[vert-bar]V[sub tb][vert-bar]=1.12[+-]0.12.
