Book Synopsis Oh My Gosh, Virginia! by : Kay Grafe
Download or read book Oh My Gosh, Virginia! written by Kay Grafe and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2010-04 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My book doesn't have one plot like a novel. Oh My Gosh, Virginiahas a whopping 100 plots. This book is a collectionof my columns over the past fteen years. "Grin and Bare It" means exactly what it says. I have no secrets in my columns. I call my writing essays orcommentaries. Each column has a series of facts, combined with my opinions. At times, my writing is tongue-in-cheek, which confused my mother-in-law. She'd say, "Hon, I think I like your stories, but I don't understand them." My writing goal in the monthly news magazine Today in Mississippiand the George County Timesis to entertainand encourage people to lighten up. A few stories are sentimental, but the main thing is they are true life happenings. You will most likely nd yourself in many of the stories, since I write about things we all have in common. I frequently speak to civic organizations, women's clubs, bank socials, country clubs and church groups. Once I wasintroduced at a Methodist Church dinner in Columbia, Mississippi, and the president of the organization said, "Kayhas come to make us laugh." I'm not a comedian, so that made me very nervous. I call myself a humorist when I write or speak. The differencein a comedian and a humorist is that a comedian tells one joke after another, and in our day, many of them are off-color. No thank you. That's not me. On the other hand, a humorist writes about the fun side of life and, in the process, has an encouraging message to deliver. I believe we need all the encouragement we can get. I write some funnystories now and again, but I don't call them jokes. People like me I call "incident prone." Things just seem to happen to us. A few months ago in my ladies' SundaySchool class, I'd unbuttoned the top button of my suit skirt because it was tight after a ve-pound weight gain, andit fell off when I stood up. I froze in shock and stood at my chair like a statue. Two helpful members grabbed myskirt and pulled it up for me. My readers like pet stories, travelogues, memories, current events that are fun and different and, well, just look inthe Table of Contents for some other topics. I stress a good attitude in stories and speeches, though we're all faced with unwanted changes, unexpectedchallenges and unpleasant surprises. I've heard it said that things work out best for those who make the best outof the way things work out. I liked that, so I adopted it as my philosophy for life. Keep grinning Helen Kay Fountain Grafe"
Book Synopsis The House of Memory by : John Freely
Download or read book The House of Memory written by John Freely and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2018-02-20 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this funny and tender memoir, John Freely reflects on a remarkable life. Splitting his early childhood between the U.S. and Ireland inspired in Freely a lifelong desire to see the world and its inhabitants. At age six he settled in Brooklyn, where he spent a sometimes tumultuous boyhood amidst a large extended family: moving from house to house, the family’s belongings packed in an uncle’s hearse. Growing up poor, in his teens, Freely took whatever jobs he could when times got tough, always shaking off his losses and moving on, hungry for new experiences and adventures. He joined the U.S. Navy at seventeen to “see the world” and did just that. As a member of an elite commando unit, he was sent to one of the most remote places in Asia where he served alongside Chiang Kai-shek’s Chinese forces during the last weeks of World War II. A vivid recollection on a world that now exists only in memory, The House of Memory is a lasting tribute to a life well lived, and to all of the immigrant families who have struggled, endured, and enriched our country.

Download or read book Saxophone Colossus written by Aidan Levy and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2022-12-06 with total page 864 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **Winner of the American Book Award (2023)** **Longlisted for the PEN/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award (2023)** The long-awaited first full biography of legendary jazz saxophonist and composer Sonny Rollins Sonny Rollins has long been considered an enigma. Known as the “Saxophone Colossus,” he is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest jazz improvisers of all time, winning Grammys, the Austrian Cross of Honor, Sweden’s Polar Music Prize and a National Medal of Arts. A bridge from bebop to the avant-garde, he is a lasting link to the golden age of jazz, pictured in the iconic “Great Day in Harlem” portrait. His seven-decade career has been well documented, but the backstage life of the man once called “the only jazz recluse” has gone largely untold—until now. Based on more than 200 interviews with Rollins himself, family members, friends, and collaborators, as well as Rollins’ extensive personal archive, Saxophone Colossus is the comprehensive portrait of this legendary saxophonist and composer, civil rights activist and environmentalist. A child of the Harlem Renaissance, Rollins’ precocious talent landed him on the bandstand and in the recording studio with Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie, or playing opposite Billie Holiday. An icon in his own right, he recorded Tenor Madness, featuring John Coltrane; Way Out West; Freedom Suite, the first civil rights-themed album of the hard bop era; A Night at the Village Vanguard; and the 1956 classic Saxophone Colossus. Yet his meteoric rise to fame was not without its challenges. He served two sentences on Rikers Island and won his battle with heroin addiction. In 1959, Rollins took a two-year sabbatical from recording and performing, practicing up to 16 hours a day on the Williamsburg Bridge. In 1968, he left again to study at an ashram in India. He returned to performing from 1971 until his retirement in 2012. The story of Sonny Rollins—innovative, unpredictable, larger than life—is the story of jazz itself, and Sonny’s own narrative is as timeless and timely as the art form he represents. Part jazz oral history told in the musicians’ own words, part chronicle of one man’s quest for social justice and spiritual enlightenment, this is the definitive biography of one of the most enduring and influential artists in jazz and American history.

Book Synopsis Sperm, Wonderful Sperm! by : Alan Smithie
Download or read book Sperm, Wonderful Sperm! written by Alan Smithie and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I remember a report some time ago extolling the health benefits of the vitamins found in sperm, with the advice that in preparation for having a healthy and intelligent baby, for some months before becoming pregnant a woman should swallow her partner's sperm. You can rest assured this report was compiled by a team of men. This has nothing whatsoever to do with the fact I set out to write a book entitled "49," a humorously light-hearted fly-on-the-wall look at my life from the day before my forty-ninth birthday to the day I hit fifty. A story of how I was coping with being too old for a mid-life crisis, counting the days tick down until the inevitable half-century. Should I be wearing socks with sandals; when would I start to enjoy pastimes that involved either binoculars, a fishing rod, making boats out of used matchsticks, a tandem bicycle or Morris dancing? Was I developing man-breasts, and more importantly, would the next woman I meet have bingo-wings? What pre-fifty pastimes would I be consigning to the dusty bin of life - wearing Ramones T-shirts and ogling young girls; my T-shirt definitely had to go. Maybe I wouldn't even make it to the end of the book; instead I'd meet my end running the Snowdonia Marathon. As it was I did make it to the end. Having spent a year writing "49" and many months trying to get a publishing deal without success, I started to write a blog. I pretty soon realised the missing ingredient - sex: sex sells. Post a good title and you have a success; mention anal sex and you have a best-seller. Without a second thought I changed the book title to "Sperm, Wonderful Sperm!" and quickly contacted an online print-on-demand publisher. This is the result...
Book Synopsis The Reluctant Film Art of Woody Allen by : Peter J. Bailey
Download or read book The Reluctant Film Art of Woody Allen written by Peter J. Bailey and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2016-05-27 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For five decades, no American filmmaker has been as prolific—or as paradoxical—as Woody Allen. From Play It Again, Sam (1972) to Midnight in Paris (2011) and Blue Jasmine (2013), Allen has produced an average of one film a year; yet in many of these movies Allen reveals a progressively skeptical attitude toward both the value of art and the cultural contributions of artists. In this second edition Peter J. Bailey extends his classic study to consider Allen's work during the twenty-first century. He illuminates how the director's decision to leave New York to shoot in European cities such as London, Paris, Rome, and Barcelona has affected his craft. He also explores Allen's shift toward younger actors and interprets the evolving critical reaction to his films—authoritatively demonstrating why the director's lifelong project of moviemaking remains endlessly deserving of careful attention.
Book Synopsis They Left Their Hearts in San Francisco by : Bill Christine
Download or read book They Left Their Hearts in San Francisco written by Bill Christine and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Cory and Douglass Cross wrote just one hit song, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco." They were unknown before they wrote it--and were unknown after it became a standard. Their lives were a tangle. They eked out a meager living in San Francisco and Brooklyn for 15 years before Tony Bennett serendipitously came across the song, which had languished. His recording revived his career and made the songwriters rich. Wealth didn't beget happiness. The duo broke up. Cross drank himself to death. Cory died from drinking as well (widely believed to be a suicide). In 2016, San Francisco dedicated a monument to the city's official song in front of the iconic Fairmont Hotel--a statue of Tony Bennett.
Book Synopsis Considering Doris Day by : Tom Santopietro
Download or read book Considering Doris Day written by Tom Santopietro and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2008-08-05 with total page 683 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biggest female box office attraction in Hollywood history, Doris Day remains unequalled as the only entertainer who has ever triumphed in movies, radio, recordings, and a multi-year weekly television series. America's favorite girl next door may have projected a wholesome image that led Oscar Levant to quip "I knew Doris Day before she was a virgin," but in Considering Doris Day Tom Santopietro reveals Day's underappreciated and effortless acting and singing range that ran the gamut from musicals to comedy to drama and made Day nothing short of a worldwide icon. Covering the early Warner Brothers years through Day's triumphs working with artists as varied as Alfred Hitchcock and Bob Fosse, Santopietro's smart and funny book deconstructs the myth of Day as America's perennial virgin, and reveals why her work continues to resonate today, both onscreen as pioneering independent career woman role model, and off, as a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States' highest civilian honor. Praised by James Cagney as "my idea of a great actor" and by James Garner as "the Fred Astaire of comedy," Doris Day became not just America's favorite girl, but the number one film star in the world. Yet after two weekly television series, including a triumphant five year run on CBS, she turned her back on show business forever. Examining why Day's worldwide success in movies overshadowed the brilliant series of concept recordings she made for Columbia Records in the '50s and '60s, Tom Santopietro uncovers the unexpected facets of Day's surprisingly sexy acting and singing style that led no less an observer than John Updike to state "She just glowed for me." Placing Day's work within the social context of America in the second half of the twentieth century, Considering Doris Day is the first book that grants Doris Day her rightful place as a singular American artist.
Download or read book Woody on Rye written by Vincent Brook and published by Brandeis University Press. This book was released on 2013-12-03 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Woody AllenÕs films have received extensive attention from scholars and critics, no book has focused exclusively on Jewishness in his work, particularly that of the late 1990s and beyond. In this anthology, a distinguished group of contributorsÑwhose work is richly contextualized in the fields of literature, philosophy, film, theater, and comedyÑexamine the schlemiel, Allen and women, the Jewish take on the Òmorality of murder,Ó AllenÕs take on Hebrew scripture and Greek tragedy, his stage work, his cinematic treatment of food and dining, and what happens to ÒJew YorkÓ when Woody takes his films out of New York City. Considered together, these essays delineate the intellectual, artistic, and moral development of one of cinemaÕs most durable and controversial directors.
