Book Synopsis Planning and Design of Engineering Systems by : Graeme Dandy
Download or read book Planning and Design of Engineering Systems written by Graeme Dandy and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This newly updated book offers a comprehensive introduction to the scope and nature of engineering work, taking a rigorous but common sense approach to the solution of engineering problems. The text follows the planning, modelling and design phases of engineering projects through to implementation or construction, explaining the conceptual framework for undertaking projects, and then providing a range of techniques and tools for solutions. It focuses on engineering design and problem solving, but also involves economic, environmental, social and ethical considerations. This third edition expands significantly on the economic evaluation of projects and also includes a new section on intractable problems and systems, involving a discussion of wicked problems and soft systems methodology as well as the approaches to software development. Further developments include an array of additional interest boxes, worked examples, problems and up-to date references. Case studies and real-world examples are used to illustrate the role of the engineer and especially the methods employed in engineering practice. The examples are drawn particularly from the fields of civil and environmental engineering, but the approaches and techniques are more widely applicable to other branches of engineering. The book is aimed at first-year engineering students, but contains material to suit more advanced undergraduates. It also functions as a professional handbook, covering some of the fundamentals of engineering planning and design in detail.

Sally Selden’s groundbreaking book moves far beyond describing best practices and offers the context in which innovative practices have been implemented. She details how agencies are creating performance-aligned workforces by adopting systems and policies that are driven by their strategic missions. This book covers core topics of personnel courses—including hiring, training, retention, performance, and recognition—but also includes integrated coverage on measuring success through assessment. Further helping readers grasp how HCM works, the book uses original data from the Government Performance Project and incorporates many comparative examples across a wide range of states, plus federal and municipal agencies. Book Synopsis Achieving High-Performance Federal Facilities by : National Research Council
Download or read book Achieving High-Performance Federal Facilities written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-11-07 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design, construction, operation, and retrofit of buildings is evolving in response to ever-increasing knowledge about the impact of indoor environments on people and the impact of buildings on the environment. Research has shown that the quality of indoor environments can affect the health, safety, and productivity of the people who occupy them. Buildings are also resource intensive, accounting for 40 percent of primary energy use in the United States, 12 percent of water consumption, and 60 percent of all non-industrial waste. The processes for producing electricity at power plants and delivering it for use in buildings account for 40 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. The U.S. federal government manages approximately 429,000 buildings of many types with a total square footage of 3.34 billion worldwide, of which about 80 percent is owned space. More than 30 individual departments and agencies are responsible for managing these buildings. The characteristics of each agency's portfolio of facilities are determined by its mission and its programs. In 2010, GSA's Office of Federal High-Performance Green Buildings asked the National Academies to appoint an ad hoc committee of experts to conduct a public workshop and prepare a report that identified strategies and approaches for achieving a range of objectives associated with high-performance green federal buildings. Achieving High-Performance Federal Facilities identifies examples of important initiatives taking place and available resources. The report explores how these examples could be used to help make sustainability the preferred choice at all levels of decision making. Achieving High-Performance Federal Facilities can serve as a valuable guide federal agencies with differing missions, types of facilities, and operating procedures.
