Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1968, The Dragon Has Two Tongues was the first book-length study of the English-language literature of Wales. Glyn Jones (1905–95) was one of Wales’s major English-language writers of fiction and poetry, and the book includes chapters dealing with the work of Dylan Thomas, Caradoc Evans, Jack Jones, Gwyn Thomas and Idris Davies, all of whom the author knew personally. This first-hand knowledge of the writers, coupled with the shrewdness of Glyn Jones’s critical comments, established The Dragon Has Two Tongues as a classic and invaluable study of this generation of Welsh writers. It also contains Glyn Jones’s own autobiographical reflections on his life and literary career, his loss and rediscovery of the Welsh language, and the cultural shifts that resulted in the emergence of a distinctive English-language literature in Wales in the early decades of the twentieth century. This edition of The Dragon Has Two Tongues was edited by Tony Brown, who discussed the book with Glyn Jones before his death in 1995 with unique access to the author’s proposed revisions and manuscript drafts, and it was first published by the University of Wales Press in 2001.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the most detailed guide in existence to a significant portion of the now extensive English-language literature of Wales. Two dozen major writers, who are generally associated with the Anglo-Welsh literary renaissance, are covered here. Some, like Dylan Thomas, are internationally known figures who have been the subject of bibliographies: in these cases the treatment here is the most up-to-date and comprehensive yet published. Others, less well-known outside Wales, are given full bibliographical treatment for the first time. The volume will therefore be indispensable to students and teachers of literature in English at all levels. The bibliography lists publications by and about each chosen writer. Primary sections record the writer's monographic output - in all editions and translations - as well as uncollected contributions to books, periodicals and newspapers. Secondary lists include critical and biographical studies of each writer: independent monographs, sections of books, periodical essays and academic theses. Two important sections preface the individual author bibliographies, one covering anthologies of Anglo-Welsh poetry and prose, the other a range of general critical and background studies. In all, this bibliography, with close on 6,000 selectively annotated entries, provides an indispensable reference guide to a developing area of literary and cultural research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until very recently, Welsh literary Modernism has been critically neglected, both within and outside Wales. This is the first book devoted solely to the study of Welsh literary Modernism, revealing and examining eight key Anglophone Welsh writers. Laura Wainwright demonstrates how their linguistic experimentation constituted an engagement with the unprecedented linguistic, social and cultural changes that were the making of modern Wales, and formed the crucible for the emergence of a distinct Welsh Modernism. This study of Welsh Modernism challenges conventional literary histories and, in more than one sense, takes Modernism and Modernist studies into new territories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Austin Clarke is widely regarded as one of 20th-century Ireland's most important poets. In this selection of nearly fifty essays and reviews written over Clarke's long career, he demonstrates that he is an astute and provocative literary critic as well. Having grown up in Dublin when the excitement of the Irish Literary Revival was still running high, Clarke knew many of the principal figures of that movement personally, and his readings of Yeats, Joyce, Synge, O'Casey, Lady Gregory, George Moore, and others enjoy the advantages of an insider's point of view. A selection of Clarke's writings on Yeats is followed by his writings on other Irish writers and the Irish Literary Revival, and on Modern English and American literature. Included as an appendix is an exhaustive list of Clarke's literary criticism published in periodicals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1984, this book provides the first full study of the carefully planned rising of south Wales miners and ironworkers in 1839 and of its collapse at the confrontation with soldiers of the 45th regiment of Newport. It examines not only the rising itself, but the factors that made it, if not inevitable, then likely. It argues that while the workers’ movement was an immediate response to the grim circumstances of the workplace, it was also deeply rooted in the centuries-old Welsh experience of repression. This title will be of particular interest to students of Victorian political and social history and well as the history of Wales.
