Book excerpt: The last ten years have seen an extraordinary transformation in how business has to account for itself. Today, the air is thick with the buzz of corporate responsibility (CR) leaders, innovators and practitioners. Conferences and publications on the topic are in abundance: the tip of an iceberg that has become a fast-growth industry. Many of those companies and service providers most vocal in distancing themselves from early experimentation have proved the strongest advocates of sustainability reporting, often winning applause and coveted awards in the process. Even companies from controversial sectors such as alcohol, cigarettes and gambling have joined the party – running up bills of tens of millions of dollars in demonstrating their new-found faith for CR. It has not always been like this. As one of the architects of the burgeoning CR movement, Simon Zadek has always been a prolific writer and contributor of ideas. The evolution of his thoughts on new economics, corporate accountability, stakeholder dialogue, social and ethical auditing and reporting have attracted consistent attention – never more than today. In this unique anthology, Zadek crystallises his key work from the last decade into a coherent and fascinating whole, which, read together, provide a context, lens and early history lesson on how CR has become one of the defining business issues of the 21st century. The writings reflect Zadek's involvement with organisations such as the New Economics Foundation, a pioneer in the development of social auditing, sustainability indicators, community finance and much more. They illustrate his contribution in setting up the Ethical Trading Initiative, and AccountAbility (where he is presently the CEO), in working with companies such as The Body Shop and Ben & Jerry's through to Nike, BT and many other civil-society organisations. The book contains 33 pieces, which are split into six sections: "The Economics of Utopia"; "Civil Society, Power and Accountability"; "Accounting for Change"; "The Civil Corporation"; "Partnership Alchemy"; and "Responsible Competitiveness". It will be an invaluable resource for anyone wishing develop an understanding of why corporate responsibility is where it is today and where it might end up tomorrow.

Book excerpt: Twelve visions of living in a climate-changed world. We are living in the Anthropocene—an era of dramatic and violent climate change featuring warming oceans, melting icecaps, extreme weather events, habitat loss, species extinction, and more. What will life be like in a climate-changed world? In Tomorrow’s Parties, science fiction authors speculate how we might be able to live and even thrive through the advancing Anthropocene. In ten original stories by writers from around the world, an interview with celebrated writer Kim Stanley Robinson, and a series of intricate and elegant artworks by Sean Bodley, Tomorrow’s Parties takes rational optimism as a moral imperative, or at least a pragmatic alternative to despair. In these stories—by writers from the United Kingdom, the United States, Nigeria, China, Bangladesh, and Australia—a young man steals from delivery drones; a political community lives on an island made of ocean-borne plastic waste; and a climate change denier tries to unmask “crisis actors.” Climate-changed life also has its pleasures and epiphanies, as when a father in Africa works to make his son’s dreams of “Viking adventure” a reality, and an IT professional dispatched to a distant village encounters a marvelous predigital fungal network. Contributors include Pascall Prize for Criticism winner James Bradley, Hugo Award winners Greg Egan and Sarah Gailey, Philip K Dick Award winner Meg Elison, and New York Times bestselling author Daryl Gregory.

Book excerpt: After reading "Walking Through The Watermelon Patch", it is my hope that you were able to find comfort in the poetic stories, a warm remembrance of past loves, a dream of new love, a hope for solutions to some problem you may have, a laugh at a quirky poem or just plain found enjoyment in the words. By no means should this book be taken as gospel to life's situations, but rather an outward, inward look at oneself, sparking the ability to decipher what is best for one's needs at that very moment. The Note Pages are for things and ideas you may want to remember, to contemplate or to question at a later time. The Thought Pages are for your reflections and visions, aspirations to be consulted at a later time. These are the wishes, hopes and dreams for a better you. If by some reason you happen to start with this summary it is the place where you are to be at that moment. "Watermelon Patch" has no index, just open the book and start to read. It is the moment of time and need of purpose where you the reader have been guided. Finally, pass along this "journal" of You (wisdom, attitude, guidance) to someone special; children, grandchildren, it is a wonderful legacy for those who shall follow in your footsteps. It may be a perfect opportunity to "impart and share knowledge that sometimes does not want to be heard!"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Places the phenomenologies of Merleau-Ponty and Nishida in dialogue and uncovers a demand for a motor-perceptual form of faith in both philosophers’ meditations on artistic expression. In Merleau-Ponty and Nishida, Adam Loughnane initiates a fascinating new dialogue between two of the twentieth century’s most important phenomenologists of the Eastern and Western philosophical worlds. Throughout the book, the reader is guided among the intricacies and innovations of Merleau-Ponty’s and Nishida’s ontological approaches to artistic expression with a focused look at a rarely explored connection between faith and negation in their philosophies. Exploring the intertwining of these concepts in their broader ontologies invokes a reappraisal of the ambiguous status of religion and art in the writings of both thinkers. Measuring these ambiguities, the ontologies of Flesh and Basho are read in-depth alongside great artworks and the motor-perceptual practices of seminal landscape artists such as Cézanne, Sesshū, Taiga, and Hasegawa, as well as other major figures of European, Chinese, and Japanese art history. Loughnane studies these artists’ bodily practices, focusing on the intimate relations realized with the landscapes they paint, and illuminating a valence of their expressive disciplines as a motor-perceptual form of faith. Merleau-Ponty and Nishida is an exciting intercultural reading, expanding two philosophers’ projects toward new horizons of research, revealing incitements in their writings that challenge unambiguous distinctions between art, philosophy, faith, and ultimately philosophy East and West. “Loughnane illuminates the ambiguous, chiasmatic, and dynamic relationality between the body and the world, providing concrete examples from art history East and West. He not only skillfully explains Nishida’s and Merleau-Ponty’s ontological notions, but also puts their philosophy to the test of art works, proving that their thinking reveals an important truth of art.” — Takeshi Kimoto, Chukyo University

Book excerpt: The way the human race acts now will shape - or break - all our futures. Neale Donald Walsch's dialogue with God continues, with a look forward to the New Spirituality that we all need to embrace right now - and how exactly we can apply this new way of thought to our lives. Humankind persists in believing that we are simply immune to self-destruction. In fact our behaviour threatens the whole of life as we know it. This challenging new book asks us to change the way we think about our faith and question our very beliefs, and shows us how we can do this within the framework of our everyday lives. This new spirituality will have an impact on the way we think about areas from TV and other mass media, to fashion, health and diet, and parenting and social mores. This book addresses age-old taboos, the mysteries of life, and ingrained ways of behaving, and provides us with the tools we need to redirect ourselves onto a new and infinitely better path. Powerful, inspiring and sometimes controversial, this book will help us to think again about all that we believe in, and to change our world for the better through changing our beliefs.

Book excerpt: This volume brings together selected papers presented during the 9th International Conference of the Association of Czech Teachers of English, titled “Teaching for Tomorrow” and hosted by the English Department of the Faculty of Science, Humanities and Education at the Technical University of Liberec, Czech Republic. The conference brought together English Language Teaching (ELT) professionals from primary, secondary and tertiary education to discuss a variety of English as a Foreign Language (EFL)-related topics, ranging from reports on language research to viewpoints and insights on classroom practice. The contributions are grouped into three sections: a) Focus on Selected Language Topics, b) Increasing Learner Autonomy and c) Innovative Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) ideas. Papers were carefully chosen in order to appeal to a broad audience. Consequently, there are articles which have a mainly theoretical bent and those which have a more practical leaning. Although the conference was hosted in the Czech Republic and the majority of participants were from this country, the book is relevant to any context where English is taught as a foreign or second language. Therefore, teachers, advanced students of English, language researchers, and, indeed, anyone engaged in the EFL profession will find this collection both educational and thought-provoking.

This book was released on 2013-02-12 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the years 350 and 500 a large body of Latin artes grammaticae emerged, educational texts outlining the study of Latin grammar and attempting a systematic discussion of correct Latin usage. These texts—the most complete of which are attributed to Donatus, Charisius, Servius, Diomedes, Pompeius, and Priscian—have long been studied as documents in the history of linguistic theory and literary scholarship. In Grammar and Christianity in the Late Roman World, Catherine Chin instead finds within them an opportunity to probe the connections between religious ideology and literary culture in the later Roman Empire. To Chin, the production and use of these texts played a decisive role both in the construction of a pre-Christian classical culture and in the construction of Christianity as a religious entity bound to a religious text. In exploring themes of utopian writing, pedagogical violence, and the narration of the self, the book describes the multiple ways literary education contributed to the idea that the Roman Empire and its inhabitants were capable of converting from one culture to another, from classical to Christian. The study thus reexamines the tensions between these two idealized cultures in antiquity by suggesting that, on a literary level, they were produced simultaneously through reading and writing techniques that were common across the empire. In bringing together and reevaluating fundamental topics from the fields of religious studies, classics, education, and literary criticism, Grammar and Christianity in the Late Roman World offers readers from these disciplines the opportunity to reconsider the basic conditions under which religions and cultures interact.
