Book Synopsis Tombes D’Époque Parthe by : Remy Boucharlat
Download or read book Tombes D’Époque Parthe written by Remy Boucharlat and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-07-22 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the hundred or so tombs of post-Alexander date excavated by Roman Ghirshman between 1947 and 1952 on the mound of the “Ville des Artisans” at Susa, six are remarkable for their construction and burial contents. Shortly before his death in 1979, Ghirshman, director of the French “Mission de Suse” from 1946 until 1968, had started to write up his final report. Based on his notes, the authors have engaged to publish these tombs, together with the original plans, drawings and photographs of the burial goods. The grave contents consisted mainly of pottery, but also included glass vessels, figurines, metal objects and other small finds. The study of the material from these large vaulted subterranean structures indicates that they were most likely intended as family tombs, thus remaining in use for several decades and should be dated in the first or second century AD. Similar tombs are known at other sites in the region of Susa, and even in Mesopotamia, e.g. at Seleucia on the Tigris. A synthesis of the evolution in tomb architecture and typology, as well as the burial practices, for the whole site of Susa between the Seleucid and early Sasanian periods (third century BC to third century AD), is also presented, based on the short reports and unpublished excavation notes of Ghirshman, in addition to unpublished reports by his predecessors at the site.

Book Synopsis The Decree of Saïs by : Anne-Sophie von Bomhard
Download or read book The Decree of Saïs written by Anne-Sophie von Bomhard and published by Oxford Centre for Maritime Archaeology. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: von Bomhard presents an edition of the stela found during underwater excavations in the Abukir Bay, at the site of ancient Thonis-Heracleion, and inscribed with the Decree of Sais. The text is a parallel to that inscribed on another stela found at Naucratis at the turn of last century. The author gives an introduction to the discovery of the two stelae, as well as a description of the monuments, including the scenes and captions found in the lunette (Part II). von Bomhard goes on to discuss the arrangement of the texts and figures depicted on the decree, and the possible symbolism behind them. The bulk of the text is occupied by a careful transliteration and translation of the text, followed by an exhaustive bibliography, an index of words discussed, a synoptic overview of orthographic and figurative variations, and an index of Egyptian words. This is an important work that contributes to the understanding of royal benefactions to temples and aspects of trade and taxation systems in force at the time of the decree.

This book was released on 1996 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although only 147 tablets have been discovered at Beydar, and although almost all the tablets contain administrative texts, they are nevertheless of great importance for our understanding of the culture and the society of Northern Jazirah in the second half of the third millenium B.C. Until the discovery of tablets at Beydar, Northern Syria had not yielded any tablets dating to the Early Dynastic period. For the first time we get an idea not only of the language, the calender, the metrology and the pantheon of Northern Syria, but also of its political and cultic institutions. These documents are now published in this second issue in the Subartu-Series. It contains chapters on linguistics, historical evaluation, technical aspects, geography, sign lists, metrology, calendars, personal names, terminology, groups of documents, transliterations.
