Book excerpt: Tolstoy as Man and Artist with an Essay on Dostoevsky (1901) is a work of literary criticism by Dmitriy Merezhkovsky. Having turned from his work in poetry to a new, spiritually charged interest in fiction, Merezhkovsky sought to develop his theory of the Third Testament, an apocalyptic vision of Christianity’s fulfillment in twentieth century humanity. In this collection of essays on Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, Merezhkovsky explores the spiritual dimensions of the written word by examining the interconnection of being and writing for two of Russian literature’s most iconic writers. For Dmitriy Merezhkovsky, an author who always wrote with philosophical and spiritual purpose, the figure of the artist as a human being is a powerful tool for understanding the quality and focus of that artist’s work. Leo Tolstoy, author of such classics as War and Peace and Anna Karenina, developed a reputation as an ascetic, deeply spiritual man who envisioned his art as an extension of his political and religious beliefs. Dostoevsky, while perhaps more interested in the psychological aspects of human life, pursued a similar path in such novels as The Brothers Karamazov and Crime and Punishment. In Merezhkovsky’s view, these writers came to embody in their lives and works the particularly Russian conflict between truths both human and divine. Tolstoy as Man and Artist with an Essay on Dostoevsky is an invaluable text both for its analysis of its subjects and for its illumination of the philosophical concepts explored by Merezhkovsky throughout his storied career. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Dmitriy Merezhkovsky’s Tolstoy as Man and Artist with an Essay on Dostoevsky is a classic work of Russian literature reimagined for modern readers.

CHAPTER XIV If in the literature of all ages and nations we wished to find the artist most contrary to Tolstoi we should have to point to Dostoievski. I say contrary, but not remote, not alien; for often they come in contact, like extremes that meet. The "heroes" of Tolstoi, as we have seen, are not so much heroes as victims. In them the human individuality, without being perfected to the full, is swallowed up in the elements. And as there is not a single heroic will ruling over all, so there is not one uniting tragic action: there are only separate tragic nodi and situations--the separate waves which rise and fall in purposeless motion, not guided by a current within, but only by external forces. The fabric of the work, like the fabric of humanity itself, apparently begins nowhere and ends nowhere. With Dostoievski there is throughout a human personality carried to the extremes of individuality, drawing and developing from the dark animal roots to the last radiant summits of spirituality. Throughout there is the conflict of heroic will with the element of moral duty and conscience, as in Raskolnikov; with that of passion, refined, deliberate, as in Svidrigailov and Versilov; in conflict with the will of the people, the State, the polity, as in Peter Verkhovenski, Stavrogine, and Shatov; and lastly in conflict with metaphysical and religious mystery, as in Ivan Karamazov,1 Prince Myshkine, and Kirillov. Passing through the furnace of these conflicts, the fire of enflaming passions and still more enflaming will, the kernel of human individuality, the inward ego, remains undissolved and is laid bare. "I am bound to display self-will," says Kirillov in the Damons, to whom suicide, which seems the limit of self-abnegation, is in fact the...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essayWhat Is Art? written in 1897 by Leo Tolstoy, is an inspiring piece of work that is both profound yet simple, simultaneously, making it an interesting read on the subject. Tolstoy's view of art is quite remarkable, changing the way you view art as a part of society forever. His simple lexicon is understandable and unassuming as well as being informative. Within this text, Tolstoy explores how art affects its audience and the emotional link that forms as a result. "In order correctly to define art, it is necessary, first of all, to cease to consider it as a means to pleasure and to consider it as one of the conditions of human life. Viewing it in this way we cannot fail to observe that art is one of the means of intercourse between man and man." - Leo Tolstoy What Is Art? is full of strong opinions and it is clear from how Tolstoy wrote that he believed most art of his time to be unethical and decadent, with most artists being deluded. The true purpose of this essay is to define art itself and Tolstoy approaches this in a number of ways throughout the book. He considers the influence that religion, philosophy and social conditions all have on art, going into great detail explaining these factors.
