Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With his penchant for nature, science, writing and photography, the desert ecologist, Dr Joh R Henschel, could not help but document the conversations about the natural world with his friend Zophosis Moralesi, a Toktokkie as beetly as can be. The Toktok Talkie articles were first published as weekly newspaper columns between 2011 and 2013, and these are now collated in this book. In it, Joh reveals some of his musings about nature and his observations of peoples' relationships to it. He deftly interweaves the human defiance of nature, symbolised by the Ancient Mariner, with nature's many values and ultimate power of having the last word, presented by a humble messenger, the Toktokkie beetle, Zophosis moralesi. His first experience of the Namib in 1977 became love at first sight. Since then he has been conducting research in the Namib and several deserts world-wide, reported in numerous scientific papers and technical documents. After spending over three decades in Namibia, Joh and his wife, Theresa, moved to Kimberley in South Africa in 2013, where he joined the National Research Foundation to continue arid land research through the South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON).

Book excerpt: With the development of easy-to-use video-editing software, inexpensive camera equipment, and a worldwide audience courtesy of the Internet, creating and watching digital video has become a popular pastime among average computer users. The growth of digital video has changed the way movies and television programs are produced and distributed throughout the world. But not all digital videos are YouTube hits and viral videos. In 2006, digital video moved beyond personal use when Great Britain installed nearly 4.2 million surveillance cameras to keep an eye on the activities of its citizens. The digital video files produced by these cameras can store information to be compared with other digital images like passport pictures and drivers' license photographs, leading to fears about how these images are used. Through engaging text, Digital Video, Revised Edition describes the digital tools used to create video images, the various types of digital video, and the future of digital video.

Book excerpt: From Philip K. Dick Award finalist Elwin Cotman, an irresistibly unnerving collection of stories that explore the anxieties of living while Black—a high-wire act of literary-fantastical hybrid fiction. A rural town finds itself under the authoritarian sway of a tree that punishes children. A pair of old friends navigate their fraught history as strange happenings escalate in a Mexican restaurant. A pair of narcissistic friends wreak havoc on an activist community. An aloof young man finds himself living through his lover’s memories. And a day of LARPing takes a cosmic turn. In each of the seven stories in this collection, characters pursue their obsessions on paths to glory and destruction while around them their worlds twist and warp, oscillating between reality and impossibility. On display throughout is Cotman’s ability to reveal truths about the human experience—about friendship, love, betrayal, bitterness—through whimsy, horror, and fantasy. Elegiac in tone, imaginative and humorous in their execution, the character-driven stories in Weird Black Girls challenge, incite, and entertain.
