Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Torrie and Curtis were from different states in the United States. He was born and raised in George during the Great Depression. She was born and raised in Alabama during World War II. While education was encouraged in Torrie's community, sharecropping was given top priority in the rural area of Georgia where Curtis grew up. He was forced to leave school before finishing the fifth grade to work in the fields. Both Curtis and Torrie looked long and hard for ways to escape their challenging beginnings in the Jim Crow South. He found his way to New Jersey and from there into the military. After graduating from high school, she, too, joined the army. This move made all the difference for both of them. Their paths met in the military as next-door neighbors in Japan. They would go on to a shared path of togetherness for over half a century. It has been said that it is not so much where one starts out in life but where he or she ends up that makes the difference. The difficult beginnings of these two individuals turned into a success story that needs to be told. Curtis overcame his education deficiency and earned three college degrees, including an electrical engineering degree from the University of California in Berkeley where he completed a successful thirty-seven-year career. He also completed a career in the United States Army Reserves as a command sergeant major. He then became a successful real estate salesperson. While all this was happening, Curtis and his wife, Torrie, made time to become real estate entrepreneurs. Torrie, too, earned three college degrees and completed a thirty-four-year career as an educator. She retired from her second career as a captain in the army reserves then went on to became a holistic wellness practitioner. Today, Torrie gives more of her time to activities related to the performing arts, which has always been her passion. One can see evidence of her love for acting shining through all that she does. Curtis and Torrie's paths did join, but they will tell you they succeeded on their journey together because they understood the importance of remaining true to their individual paths where they stayed true to each of their own life's purpose. In other words, they enjoyed a life of "togetherness, without standing too close."

Book excerpt: “Patricia Spadaro is a marvelous guide through the inner realms of the heart. I always feel uplifted by her words." —Marianne Williamson, #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Return to Love Honor Yourself: The Inner Art of Giving and Receiving (winner of two national book awards) skillfully guides us through one of the key stressors and paradoxes of our time—how to balance what others need with what we need, how to give and to receive. Should I sacrifice for others or take time to care for myself? Be generous or draw boundaries? Stay in a relationship or say goodbye? When I give to others, do I really need to give up myself? Tensions like these are not only a natural part of life, they are life. But rather than focusing on how to pamper ourselves, Honor Yourself goes to the heart of the problem so you can find real solutions. While modern society is ill-equipped to bring us back into balance, the sages of East and West are experts, and Honor Yourself explores their practical, and surprising, advice. Combining wisdom from around the world with real-life stories and a treasury of tools, it exposes the most potent myths about giving that can sabotage your relationships, career, finances, even your health, without you knowing it. With candor and compassion, it shows how to move beyond the myths to the magic of honoring yourself so you can live a life filled with possibility and passion and give your greatest gifts to your loved ones, your community, and the world. We are called to master the delicate dance of giving and receiving in virtually every area of our lives, and this beautiful work offers empowering and heartfelt ways to do it. It will free you to celebrate your own gifts and greatness as you explore the dynamics behind setting boundaries, being honest about unhealthy people in your life, honoring endings, using feelings to stay true to yourself, finding your own voice, giving with the heart rather than the head, and much more. Just as importantly, Honor Yourself will teach you the steps for staying in balance. For when you learn the steps, you can perform the dance—and that's when the magic begins.

It includes their correspondence of several years and contrasts with today's communication which is often electronic and brief. The setting on the Oregon coast is almost another character as it lends itself to nurture and strengthen their love. A theme throughout is the importance of family and how secrets may affect its solidarity and cohesiveness. Should they be revealed or should the common good of the family take precedence? Explore the minds and hearts of two people who don't want love to be a myth. Their language is rich, the emotions are stirring and the provocation to love well is strong.

Book excerpt: With clarity and depth characteristic of the classics, this spiritual bestseller from the author of The Return of the Prodigal Son lays out a perceptive and insightful plan for the spiritual life and achieving the ultimate goal of that life—union with God. “One of the world’s greatest spiritual writers.”—Christianity Today Henri Nouwen views our spiritual “ascent” as evolving in three movements: The first, from loneliness to solitude, focuses on the spiritual life as it relates to the experience of our own selves. The second, from hostility to hospitality, explores our spiritual life as a life for others. The final movement, from illusion to prayer, offers penetrating thoughts on the most mysterious relationship of all: our relationship with God. Throughout, Nouwen emphasizes that the more we understand (and not simply deny) our inner struggles, the more we will be able to embrace a prayerful and genuine life that is also open to others’ needs. Reaching Out is a rich book to be read, reread, pondered, and shared. It “does not offer answers or solutions,” Nouwen cautions, “but is written in the conviction that the quest for an authentic Christian spirituality is worth the effort and the pain, since in the midst of this quest we can find signs offering hope, courage, and confidence.”

Book excerpt: Just as The Road Less Traveled provided hope and guidance for individuals seeking growth, this major new work by M. Scott Peck, M.D., offers a needed prescription for our deeply ailing society. Our illness is Incivility--morally destructive patterns of self-absorption, callousness, manipulativeness, and materialism so ingrained in our routine behavior that we do not even recognize them. There is a deepening awareness that something is seriously wrong with our personal and organizational lives. Using examples from his own life, case histories, and dramatic scenarios of businesses that made a conscious decision to bring civility to their organizations , Dr. Peck demonstrates how change can be effected and how we and our organizations can be restored to health. This wise, practical, and radical book is a blueprint for achieving personal and societal well-being.
