Book Synopsis The Japanese Theatre by : Benito Ortolani
Download or read book The Japanese Theatre written by Benito Ortolani and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1990 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An up-to-date cultural history of the Japanese theatre in all its forms including primitive rituals, court and popular dance-drama, puppet shows and westernized plays, is narrated here for the first time in English by a western authority in the field. The book underlines Zeami and Zenchiku's secret tradition of the nō , explaining Zen-inspired spiritual teachings for the actor's training on the way to enlightened performance. It also gives relevance to the transformation of an anti-establishment entertainment by prostitutes into spectacular kabuki stagecraft, and to the modernization process which created shingeki modern drama, and moved it into the context of world theatre. The final chapter summarizes the history of western discovery of the Japanese stage. The illustrations, the indexes, the glossary and the extensive bibliography - including all major literature in western languages until 1989 - also contribute to make this volume a must for all students of the Japanese theatre, and for anyone interested in a better understanding of Japanese culture as mirrored in its theatrical component.
Book Synopsis Japan's Relations with Muslim Asia by : B. Bryan Barber
Download or read book Japan's Relations with Muslim Asia written by B. Bryan Barber and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-12-10 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a useful and extensive account of Japan’s past discoveries and present interactions with Muslim states and societies across Asia. Bearing in mind the U.S.-led global meta-narrative of Islam spoken in tandem with security and threats, this book examines how this reconciles with Japan’s self-proclaimed “values-based” approach to diplomacy across Asia in the twenty-first century. The author considers Japan’s historic conceptualization and learning of Islam, and its acute needs for access to markets and energy from Muslim-majority states in Asia. He also argues that Japan securitizes Islam in a manner distinct from Western, Russian, or Chinese securitization today, but that Japan promotes itself as a model for human security and development across an Asia inclusive of Muslim states. Japan’s approach to Islam and Muslim societies today offers much from which other great powers can learn.

Book Synopsis The Japanification of Children's Popular Culture by : Mark I. West
Download or read book The Japanification of Children's Popular Culture written by Mark I. West and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2008-10-23 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Godzilla stomped his way into American movie theaters in 1956, and ever since then Japanese trends and cultural products have had a major impact on children's popular culture in America. This can be seen in the Hello Kitty paraphernalia phenomenon, the popularity of anime television programs like Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z, computer games, and Hayao Miyazaki's award-winning films, such as Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. The Japanification of Children's Popular Culture brings together contributors from different backgrounds, each exploring a particular aspect of this phenomenon from different angles, from scholarly examinations to recounting personal experiences. The book explains the interconnections among the various aspects of Japanese influence and discusses American responses to anime and other forms of Japanese popular culture.
Book Synopsis Japanese Pan-Asianism and the Philippines from the Late Nineteenth Century to the End of World War II by : Sven Matthiessen
Download or read book Japanese Pan-Asianism and the Philippines from the Late Nineteenth Century to the End of World War II written by Sven Matthiessen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-10-20 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Japanese Pan-Asianism and the Philippines from the Late 19th Century to the End of World War II – Going to the Philippines Is Like Coming Home? Sven Matthiessen examines the development of Japanese Pan-Asianism and the perception of the Philippines within this ideology. Due to the archipelago’s previous colonisation by Spain and the US the Philippines was a special case among the Japanese occupied territories during the war. Matthiessen convincingly proves that the widespread pro-Americanism among the Philippine population made it impossible for Japanese administrators to implement a pan-Asianist ideology that centred on a 'return to Asian values'. The expectation among some Japanese Pan-Asianists that ‘going to the Philippines was like coming home’ was never fulfilled.
