Tobacco output was forecast at billion pounds, down 12 percent from 1984 due to reduced acreage. Flue - cured growing conditions were not as good as a year earlier, so leaf quality may have declined. This decline, combined with large supplies, caused prices at flue - cured auctions to average somewhat lower than last season. The tobacco supply for is forecast to decline about 3 percent to billion pounds, with flue - cured accounting for most of the decrease. Burley supplies are up. Total tobacco stocks going into the new marketing year (july 1 for flue - cured and cigar - wrapper types, and October 1 for all other types) will likely equal billion pounds, about 1 percent higher than a year earlier.
