Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the Civil War, North Alabama was infamous for lawlessness. The era saw courts filled with defendants who spanned the socioeconomic gamut--farmers, merchants and politicians. In 1811, John B. Haynes tore apart William Badger's house with his bare hands. Rodah Barnett ran a series of ill-reputed brothels in the early 1820s. In 1818, Rebecca Layman "accidentally" gave her husband sulfuric acid instead of rum. There is even a case of assault with frozen corn. Author John O'Brien relays these and more stories of the shady side of North Alabama during the antebellum period.
Book Synopsis The Greater Good by : Laura Beth Daws

Book excerpt: Examines the role of press coverage in promoting the mission of the TVA, facilitating family relocation, and formulating the historical legacy of the New Deal For poverty-stricken families in the Tennessee River Valley during the Great Depression, news of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal plans to create the Tennessee Valley Authority--bringing the promise of jobs, soil conservation, and electricity--offered hope for a better life. The TVA dams would flood a considerable amount of land on the riverbanks, however, forcing many families to relocate. In exchange for this sacrifice for the "greater good," these families were promised "fair market value" for their land. As the first geographic location to benefit from the electricity provided by TVA, the people of North Alabama had much to gain, but also much to lose. In The Greater Good: Media, Family Removal, and TVA Dam Construction in North Alabama Laura Beth Daws and Susan L. Brinson describe the region's preexisting conditions, analyze the effects of relocation, and argue that local newspapers had a significant impact in promoting the TVA's agenda. The authors contend that it was principally through newspapers that local residents learned about the TVA and the process and reasons for relocation. Newspapers of the day encouraged regional cooperation by creating an overwhelmingly positive image of the TVA, emphasizing its economic benefits and disregarding many of the details of removal. Using mostly primary research, the volume addresses two key questions: What happened to relocated families after they sacrificed their homes, lifestyles, and communities in the name of progress? And what role did mediated communication play in both the TVA's family relocation process and the greater movement for the public to accept the TVA's presence in their lives? The Greater Good offers a unique window into the larger impact of the New Deal in the South. Until now, most research on the TVA was focused on organizational development rather than on families, with little attention paid to the role of the media in garnering acceptance of a government-enforced relocation.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical and Statistical Review and Mailing and Shipping Guide of North Alabama: Embracing the Cities of Birmingham, Anniston, Gadsden, Huntsville, Decatur, Tuscaloosa and Bessemer, With Their Manufacturing and Mercantile Industries, History Progress, and Development and Sketches of Public and Private Citizens North Alabama to-day is the most prosperous and rapidly progressive section of the South. The fame of its vast resources - its iron - its coal limestone, endless variety of miscellaneous minerals, timber I and soil and climate, has spread throughout the world, and the remarkable development achieved within a decade has been the wonder of two hemispheres. It is, indeed, surprising how the enormous wealth of North Alabama, surrounded by the most favorable condition for its development, could have been permitted to lie dormant for so many years; and we doubt not that since it has now commenced to be developed in a sound, business-like manner, the new era which is only just dawning will lead to the establishment of multiform manufacturing industries, which, in time, will cause it to lead all other manufacturing regions of the Union. Free labor has become a blessing, whilst slavery was a curse; and while there may be temporary setbacks, the future destiny of this region as a great manufacturing country is now fully assured. The fact that most of these great resources are at present owned by Southern men, and are being developed with Southern capital, the readiness with which the laboring element, especially colored laborers, has become skilled in mining and manufacturing, are matters of as much surprise to non-residents as they are a gratification to Alabamians. The great majority of the industries here have been started upon a sound basis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis To Kill a Mockingbird by : Harper Lee
Download or read book To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voted America's Best-Loved Novel in PBS's The Great American Read Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning masterwork of honor and injustice in the deep South—and the heroism of one man in the face of blind and violent hatred One of the most cherished stories of all time, To Kill a Mockingbird has been translated into more than forty languages, sold more than forty million copies worldwide, served as the basis for an enormously popular motion picture, and was voted one of the best novels of the twentieth century by librarians across the country. A gripping, heart-wrenching, and wholly remarkable tale of coming-of-age in a South poisoned by virulent prejudice, it views a world of great beauty and savage inequities through the eyes of a young girl, as her father—a crusading local lawyer—risks everything to defend a black man unjustly accused of a terrible crime.

Book Synopsis North Alabama Beer by : Sarah Bélanger
Download or read book North Alabama Beer written by Sarah Bélanger and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017-08-28 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North Alabama built its fi rst commercial brewery in Huntsville in 1819, three months before the state joined the Union. Before Prohibition in 1915, the region was peppered with numerous saloons, taverns and dance halls. Locals still found ways to get their booze during Prohibition using Tennessee River steamboats and secret tunnels for smuggling. Alabama re-legalized beer in 1937, but it wasn't until 2004, when the grass-roots organization Free the Hops took on the state's harsh beer laws, that the craft beer scene really began to flourish. Authors Sarah Bélanger and Kamara Bowling Davis trace the history of beer in North Alabama from the early saloon days to the craft beer explosion.
