Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holy Week is a pivotal point in salvation history. It starts with the joyful acclamation of the Song of David, the Messiah, as the people "Hosannah" our Lord riding a donkey. We observe a new command in his body and blood. We see his excruciating and bloody death on a cross. And, just as we give up all hope as the disciples did, he rises victorious from the grave! Hallelujah! He has risen! He has risen indeed! Hallelujah! These writings and sermons reflect on those crucial events in our salvation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The season of Lent--the Church's spring--begins the celebration of the dying and rising of Jesus, a time of deep personal renewal only completed in the Easter season. With the revival of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, Lent returns to its original character as a time of formation for catechumens. But the Sunday and daily liturgical readings for the season of Lent do more than prepare catechumens for the reception of Baptism at the Easter Vigil. Even the long baptized can progress through the liturgical readings of this season into a deeper experience of their Baptism, their death and rebirth in the Lord. As in the early Church, all of us can take the season of Lent, and especially its forty weekdays of fasting, as an opportunity to turn back to the Lord, our God. Patrick Ryan's reflections on the liturgical readings of the Lenten season arise not only from study of the scriptural passages involved but also from his extensive familiarity with the history of religion and his long experience of life in the Christian churches both of Africa and the United States. From years of inter-religious encounter he has come to a different sense of the Paschal mystery, one enriched by a broad appreciation for the complexity of human longing, religious and secular, for the transcendent. +

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With In the Company Christ, Sister Benedicta Ward, a church historian, guides us through the history of Christian procession. Through the practice of pilgrimage we live the resurrection, and join a wide Christian community. Pilgrimage is a way into the eternal Jerusalem, a way into the Gospel. Over centuries of practice, the rituals and traditions of pilgrimage have evolved. Using the Holy Days of Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Easter as her signposts, Sr. Ward takes us through time. Among our stops is ancient Palestine, where we explore the writings of the 4th Spanish nun, Egeria. Leaving Jerusalem, we cross time and arrive in the rituals of medieval English monasticism. Finally, we end where we began, with a journey into the Trinity. By taking part in this historical procession, we find a clear line of continuity between ancient and medieval times, and our own modernity. In the Company of Christ is a journey for an individual or for a parish, to be taken during Lent or any time of the church year.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isabella Lilias Trotter (1853-1928) was an artist and a missionary for over 38 years to the Muslims of Algeria. John Ruskin, the famous art critic, didn't believe that ladies could paint before he met Lilias. He changed his mind after he met her and believed that if she would give her life to painting she could become the greatest painter of the nineteenth century. Ruskin believed that if she would devote herself to art "she would be the greatest living painter and do things that would be immortal. " He was unhappy that she was spending so much time on the streets of London, helping with the YWCA, when he thought she ought to be painting. Lilias, however, decided to give up her career in art in order to serve God. She always remained a good friend of Ruskin's though, and they wrote many letters when she was in Algeria. She also wrote several books - beautifully illustrated by herself, including: Parables of the Cross (1894), Parables of the Christ-Life (1899), and a book for Sufi Muslims, The Way of the Sevenfold Secret.

Book excerpt: Participant Workbook Revised and reformatted! Genesis to Jesus opens the door to deeper understanding of Scripture for all Catholics, especially those who find reading the Bible a daunting task. The book leads the reader on an overview of salvation history in order to give the "big picture," the single plot that runs through the books of the Bible. What is that overarching story? God's plan to bring all humanity into his covenant family. This overview of key covenants from creation to the New Covenant established by Jesus not only helps the reader see how various biblical stories fit together in God's plan, it also provides a foundation for ongoing Bible study. Genesis to Jesus is the first in a series of study guides produced by The St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology, based in Steubenville, Ohio. The Center, founded in 2000, develops materials to help Catholics deepen their faith through Scripture study. KIMBERLY HAHN is the author of Life-Giving Love: Embracing God's Beautiful Design for Marriage, the Life-Nurturing Love series published by Servant Books, and coauthor, with her husband Scott Hahn, of Rome, Sweet Rome: Our Journey to Catholicism. DR. SCOTT HAHN teaches theology at the Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio. He is the author of A Father Who Keeps His Promises: God's Covenant Love in Scripture and many other books. They are the parents of six children.
