Book excerpt: The study was conducted to findout highly correlated character with forage yield dry matter yield and its quality to estimate variability and heritability of different quantitative and heritability of different quantitative characters in the present material to find out direct and indirect effects of various component characters for dry matter yield and crude protein yield per plant and to identify the suitable selection functions for higher genetic advance in dry matter yield and its quality. High heritability was observed for the characters viz plant height leaf breadth stem girth NDF ADF HC and CC under cut 1 for characters days to harvest leaf length CP% NDF ADF HC and CC under cut 11 and for characters days to harvest leaf length DM% NDF ADF HC CC under single cut. Whereas medium heritability was observed for characters viz tiller number leaf length and cp per cent under cut 1 for plant height leaf oreadth and dry matter percent under cut 11 and for olant height leaf breadth leaf weight and cp per cent under single cut whereas other characters showed low heritability below 30 percent. Among morphological characters plant height under 11 and single cut showed higher expected gain. Overall picture of quality traits showed that NDF ADF and HC increased with maturity while cp and cc decreased with maturity.

Book excerpt: Due to its adaptation to extremely harsh environments, pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L) R. Br.) is one of the most important staple cereals cultivated in the arid and semi-arid tropics of Asia and Africa. In these regions pearl millet is mainly produced under low-input, rainfed conditions in traditional farming systems, where several constrains are affecting pearl millet production, such as inter-annual rainfall variability, pests, diseases, Striga and use of low yielding varieties. The majority of the human population in these regions is affected by nutritional deficiencies of essential minerals causing micronutrient malnutrition (so-called ‘hidden hunger’). Plant genetic resources provide basic materials for selection and improvement of crop productivity through the optimal design of breeding programs to meet food security needs of the world’s rapidly rising population. The advent of PCR-based molecular markers such as simple sequence repeats (SSRs) has created an opportunity for fine-scale genetic characterization of germplasm collections. Understanding the structure of diversity and the identification of distinct materials with complementary traits for recombination by crossing provides the foundation for effective and sustained pearl millet population breeding and synthetic and hybrid development, based on the concept of heterotic groups in this allogamous crop.

Six generations comprising of p1,p2,F, F2,B and B2 of six crosses viz. SAR725xSAR66(cross 1) SAR 1065x SAD 54 (cross 2) SAR3xSAR 1183 (cross 3) P2824*SAR 1146 (cross 4) P2616xACC No 136 (cross 5) and Acc No. 131xSAR 1218 (cross 6) were studied. A consolidated picture of various gene actions revealed that 50% flowering in cross 3 and 4 plant height in crosses 2 & 3 stem diameter in crosses 3 and 6 leaf number in cross 2 leaf length in cross 2,3 and 4 leaf breadth in cross 6 leaf weight in cross 2 and 6 stem weight in cross 2 tiller number in cross 1,3,4 and 5 and forage yield in crosses 2 and 6 were found to be governed by more of additive genes. The dominance effect was found to play grater role in the inheritance of days to 50% flowering in cross 5 and 6 plant ht. In cross 5, stem dia in 244 leaf no. In 1,4,5 leaf length in cross 1 leaf breadth in cross 1,2,5 leaf weight in cross 4 stem weight in cross 1,3,4 tiller number in cross 2 and forage yield in crosses 1 and 3. The improvement in the these characters could be achied by hybsidization. Dry matter yield/plant was found to be influences by additive gene action in cross 2 . The dominant gene action was appreciably contributed in crosses 1,3,4,5,. In cross 6 the dominance x dominance 1 type of interaction was found to play greater role in the interitance of dry matter yield. The crude protein content in cross 2 3 was found to be controlled by more of additive gene action. In cross 4 crude protein content was found to be gevemed by more of additive x additive type of interaction.

Results revealed that a wide spectrum of variability exists in the present genotypes for various morphological characters. SAR 81, SAR 878, SAR 881 and IP2710 genotypes are identical for their further testing and using them in breeding programmes. Stem weight per plant, leaves weight, per plant number of leaves per plant tiller number plant and the stem girth seem to be the most important components of green yield per plant.

Variety K-672 was observed to be superior variety based on first cut mean analysis with respect to forage yield per plant leaf breadth stem diameter and head girth variety gaint bajra showed superior performance in second cut based upon characters such as plant beight leaf number leaf lenght stem diameter head lenght and forage yield per tiller. In combined mean performance no variety was found superior. The analysis for first cut data revealed highest co-efficient of variation heritability and genetic advance for characters such as leaf number head lenght and head girth however these characters showed low values of co-efficient of variation beritability and genetic advance in the analysis of second cut data. Forage yield per tiller had the maximum contribution to forage yield per tiller in both first as well as second cut.
