Book excerpt: Women today feel a constant pressure to improve themselves and just never feel like they're "enough." All too often, they live their daily lives disheartened, disillusioned, and disappointed. That's because joy doesn't come from a new self-improvement strategy; it comes from rooting their identity in who God says they are and what he has done on their behalf. This book calls women to look away from themselves in order to find the abundant life God offers them—contrasting the cultural emphasis on personal improvement and empowerment with what the Scriptures say about a life rooted, built up, and established in the gospel.

Book Synopsis A Goodly Heritage by : Arch B. Taylor Jr.
Download or read book A Goodly Heritage written by Arch B. Taylor Jr. and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-04-29 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arch B. Taylor Jr. traces his ancestry from colonial times, immigrating from Great Britain and Scotland. He describes his family life through high school and Davidson College in North Carolina. As a student in Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary and newly wed to Margaret Hopper he served as student pastor in Indiana and later in a rural pastorate in Tennessee. With a young son they went to China as missionaries, only to end up in Japan. They devoted themselves to Shikoku Christian College for twenty-eight years, including Arch’s four years as its president. His biographical sketch of Margaret pays tribute to her as life partner and describes her outstanding qualities as a feminist activist. After Margaret’s death in 1984 Arch retired to Louisville, Kentucky, where Social Security and a Presbyterian pension support what he calls “retread.” Because the Creator God is love, and God sent Jesus as the savior of the world, Arch has devoted these years to nonviolence and justice and efforts for a better life for people on earth. Arch’s retread career was greatly blessed by his second wife Wanda Rowe Myers, who died in 2006. Arch has labored stoutly against the militarism of the United States. He opposed President Reagan’s Contra war and joined Witness for Peace in Nicaragua. As missionary in residence at Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina he condemned Bush’s first Iraq attack as a war crime. He joined the 2001 Presbyterian Peace Fellowship delegation in Israel / Palestine. He criticizes U.S. complicity in Israel’s violations of international law and the human rights of Palestinians. Arch advocates the abolition of nuclear weapons and the death penalty, while supporting fairness for LGBTQ people and women’s freedom of reproductive rights. Now past ninety, Arch has reduced his activism but continues to write and advocate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Goodly Heritage , Cornelis Pronk surveys the history of the Secession of 1834, beginning with the events leading up to this important spiritual movement and subsequently following its long journey through the Netherlands and North America until 1892. He then focuses on a small minority that decided to continue as the original Christian Reformed Church, considering its growth and how it formulated theological positions in relation to several other Reformed denominations. Throughout, special attention is given to the doctrines of covenant, baptism, and the Holy Spirit’s ministry in applying salvation. This work not only explains the concerns of De Cock and other fathers of the Secession. It presses beyond the early years of the reform movement to present a larger picture of the developments of Secession theology and the contributions made by its main representatives.

Book Synopsis Ringing in the Common Love of Good by : Kerry Badgely
Download or read book Ringing in the Common Love of Good written by Kerry Badgely and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2000-02-24 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the mid-1920s the UFO had gone into a period of decline from which it never recovered. The promise of equality hoped for by UFWO members never materialized and the UFCC, once a key component in the development of an alternative vision, began to focus more on profits than on politics. In Ringing in the Common Love of Good Kerry Badgley explores both the rise and the fall of the UFO, focusing on the Ontario counties of Lambton, Simcoe, and Lanark. He challenges the liberal-capitalist interpretation that the movement was nothing more than a group of impatient Liberals, as well as the Marxist view that the UFO consisted of self-interested independent commodity producers. Badgley argues that as the UFO broke free from hegemonic forces it developed alternative economic, political, and social visions, but that it was these same forces, combined with internal struggles and a conservative leadership, that ultimately resulted in the decline of the movement as a vehicle for democratic change in Ontario.

Download or read book Against Jovinianus written by St. Jerome and published by Dalcassian Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-12-07 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jovinianus, about whom little more is known than what is to be found in Jerome's treatise, published a Latin treatise outlining several opinions: That a virgin is no better, as such, than a wife in the sight of God. Abstinence from food is no better than a thankful partaking of food. A person baptized with the Spirit as well as with water cannot sin. All sins are equal. There is but one grade of punishment and one of reward in the future state. In addition to this, he held the birth of Jesus Christ to have been by a "true parturition," and was thus refuting the orthodoxy of the time, according to which, the infant Jesus passed through the walls of the womb as his Resurrection body afterwards did, out of the tomb or through closed doors.

Book Synopsis Finding a Godly Mate by : Gregory Brown
Download or read book Finding a Godly Mate written by Gregory Brown and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can one find a godly mate? When God made Adam, he said it was not good for him to be alone and then provided him with Eve. The desire for companionship is normal and good. Yet, for most, there is both a season of singleness and a season for seeking a mate. How should one go about seeking a godly mate when it's time? In churches, often training in this area is neglected; therefore, singles are unprepared and often greatly struggle. Too often they jump into the dating/courting process with no real guidance. Consequently, many compromise, pick up emotional and physical baggage, and miss God's best. Scripture says that this process can be difficult: Proverbs 20:6 says, "Many a man claims to have unfailing love, but a faithful man who can find?" Proverbs 31:10 adds, "A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies." A godly mate is like a precious jewel-very rare! How can one be found? Scripture guides us by either telling us exactly what to do or by giving us principles. In Finding a Godly Mate, the Genesis 24 narrative of the search for Isaac's future wife, Rebekah, is exposited and principles for singles are abundantly gathered. Let's study it together with the Bible Teacher's Guide. "Expositional, theological, and candidly practical! I highly recommend The Bible Teacher's Guide for anyone seeking to better understand or teach God's Word." -Dr. Young-Gil Kim, Founding President of Handong Global University "Helpful to both the layman and the serious student, The Bible Teacher's Guide, by Dr. Greg Brown, is outstanding!" -Dr. Neal Weaver, President of Louisiana Baptist University

Treatise on How to Live Well in All Estates opens the volume with a description of the reign of faith in Christians’ hearts so that they avoid sin and pursue the will of God in all they do. Treatise on Vocations explains how God calls Christians to live out their faith in whatever responsibilities they hold within society. Right Manner of Erecting and Ordering a Family applies the concept of vocation to life in the home. Calling of the Ministry applies vocation to the church, describing the duties and dignities of the ministers of Christ. Art of Prophesying equips those called to the ministry with the proper manner and method of preaching God’s Word. Christian Equity exhorts Christians to maintain justice and preserve peace, whether in families, church, or the greater commonwealth. Having finished with principles of living by faith, the volume ends with Treatise on Dying Well , which discusses the importance of faith at the end of life.
