Book excerpt: Excerpt from To Mary in Heaven A fire of fierce and laughing light That clove the shuddering heart of night Leapt earthward and the thunder's might That pants and yearns Made fitful music round its flight - And earth saw Burns. - Swinburne Robert Burns was the great leader in the movement that advocated the Brotherhood of Man and liberty of mind and speech for the individual. He was the great poet of the masses, - not of the masses alone, but of all men everywhere. Lord Rosebery, speaking in Glasgow, said: "I have often asked myself if a roll-call of fame were read over at the beginning of every century, how many men of eminence would answer a second time to their names; but of our poet there is no doubt or question. The Adsum of Burns rings out clear and unchallenged. There are few before him on the list, and we cannot now conceive of a list without him." Book excerpt: What ever happened to the Virgin Mary in the modern Catholic Church? For the past forty years her presence has been radically minimized. In a groundbreaking work, Charlene Spretnak cuts across the battle lines delineated by the left and the right within the Church to champion the recovery of the full spiritual presence of Mary. Spretnak, a liberal Catholic, sheds new light on the dethroning of the Queen of Heaven at Vatican II, and she traces the rise of a grassroots resurgence of Marian spirituality in recent years. She offers fresh reflections on the meaning of Mary, situating the Marian renewal in the larger context of contemporary efforts to correct the barrenness and sterility of modernity. Spretnak also notes that much of the cosmological symbolism traditionally associated with Mary as the Queen of Heaven and the maternal matrix is simpatico with recent discoveries in scientific cosmology about the profoundly relational nature of the Creation. Moreover, Spretnak asserts that a deep loss ensues for women in particular when Mary's female embodiment of grace and mystical presence is denied and replaced with a strictly text-bound version of her as a Nazarene housewife. Complete with a striking insert of contemporary Marian art, Missing Mary is a deeply insightful reflection on Mary in the modern age.

Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller and Man Booker Prize Finalist: A novel of ancient Greece by the author Hilary Mantel calls “a shining light.” Alexander the Great stands alone as a leader and strategist, and Fire from Heaven is Mary Renault’s unsurpassed dramatization of the formative years of his life. His parents fight for their precocious son’s love: On one side, his volatile father, Philip, and on the other, his overbearing mother, Olympias. The story tells of the conqueror’s two great bonds—to his horse, Oxhead, and to his dearest friend and eventual lover, Hephaistion—and of the army he commands when he is barely an adult. Coming of age during the battles for southern Greece, Alexander the Great appears in all of his colors—as the man who first takes someone’s life at age twelve and who swiftly eliminates his rivals as soon as he comes to power—and emerges as a captivating, complex, larger-than-life figure. Fire from Heaven is the first volume of the Novels of Alexander the Great trilogy, which continues with The Persian Boy and Funeral Games. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Mary Renault including rare images of the author. “Mary Renault is a shining light to both historical novelists and their readers. She does not pretend the past is like the present, or that the people of ancient Greece were just like us. She shows us their strangeness; discerning, sure-footed, challenging our values, piquing our curiosity, she leads us through an alien landscape that moves and delights us.” —Hilary Mantel

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Month of Mary, Conceived Without Sin Every age of the Church is, in a certain sense, more glorious than any of 'the ages which have preceded it. It is true that there have been special ages in which God has magnified the Church more visibly than in others, and has been pleased to illustrate it with peculiar splendor and these Special ages have by no means followed each other in chronological succession. But on the whole, the glory of the Church increases with its age. It be comes more famous by its very vicissitudes. Every trial through which it passes is a fresh illumination of its divine origin and its unearthly character. It grows more honorable by the mere force of time, because of the increased number of dangers which it has surmounted, of hostile predictions which it has belied, and of grand human institutions which it has outlived. Moreover the number of the saints in the Church triumphant multiplies yearly, . And cannot be, according to St. Paul's law of sym pathy, without influence on the Church militant. Thus the past, as it departs, is forever adorning the Church with beautiful monuments and interesting memorials, while the present, as it reinforces the multitudes of heaven, is forever infusing fresh vigor, joy and liberty into the body upon earth. Book excerpt: The last dogma defined by the Church is the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heavenly glory. This dogma is the gateway to answer one of the greatest problems that has ever faced the human race. What is the meaning of life? Is death the end of everything? Mary's Assumption tells us that eternal life with God is the final evolution of every man and woman who dies in the friendship of God. At the end of time all will be taken up and transformed, the body and the soul, the corporeal and the spiritual. For all that God created is sacred and loved. Where Mary is, all the elect will be. Whoever contemplates this mystery learns much about God, Christ, Mary, the Church and oneself. The Virgin Mary is one who walked in the darkness of faith and never despaired, one who obeyed and never deserted, one who loved and was never unfaithful. She is an example of the perfect disciple. Mary was Jesus' first and the most perfect disciple of Christ. The Virgin Mary, taken up into heaven after her earthly life, remains for us the symbol of all that we should be, and of all that we will be, if only we are faithful to Christ. She is the woman in the life of Christ and the woman in the life of all who follow him. On earth Mary was the mother of Jesus and his wholehearted companion, his comfort and joy. Now in heaven close to Jesus, she watches over us with a mother's care and intercedes for us. She is our life, our sweetness and our hope. She is our shining example. Where she is, we shall be. God knows we need the woman clothed in glory. The purpose of this book is to contemplate the Virgin Mary in her heavenly glory. The book's reflections go beyond the mystery of the Assumption in itself to contemplate the Mother of God in glory in relation to Christ and the Church. For Mary in glory is close to Christ and the people of God. We hope to penetrate more deeply this twofold mystery. To facilitate this task, the book is divided the study into two parts: The Assumption in the Mystery of Christ, and the Assumption in the Mystery of the Church. The first part follows the model of Chapter eight of the Constitution on the Church of the Second Vatican Council. There as here, Mary is considered first in the mystery of Christ and then in the mystery of the Church. The first part is actually a commentary on the Apostolic Constitution Munificentissimus Deus that defined the dogma of the Assumption. It is here we perceive that the Assumption is not an isolated privilege granted to Mary, but one that is intimately joined with the person and mission of Christ. Her triumphal entrance into glory is part of Christ's victory over sin and death. The second part goes beyond the Constitution and ponders the Immaculate Virgin in heaven in relation to the mystery of the Church. The first consideration is Mary in heaven as the model, image and beginning of the pilgrim Church. This is followed by her relation to the suffering and heavenly Church. The final chapter ponders the texts of the liturgical feast of the Assumption. It is in the liturgy of the feast that we experience God's love for the human family; Mary's inseparable union with Christ her Son and Savior, and the joy that we are called to experience once our pilgrimage of faith is over. For, taken up to heaven we join Mary in the communion of saints in union with Christ our Lord.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mary, the Mother of Christ, in Prophecy and Its Fulfilment Not only are vviseman, Newman, Manning, Harper, Passaglia, Ward and Brownson called to his aid, but leading Anglican theolo gians and Bishops as well. He passes over no difficulty, and this part of his work is invaluable to the Catholic reader; for it is a veritable arsenal, richly furnished with weapons of every kind to overthrow the enemies of our heavenly Queen. We have read the Whole volume, not only with pleasure and edification, but we have found it one of the very best we have thus far seen. Mr. Quigley deserves the gratitude of every Catholic, and we hope his publishers will find that his labors are appreciated. We recommend the book cordially to all our readers. In his preface the author says: What I desiderate in Protestant teachers is a knowledge of the Catholic doctrines they attack. In the conscientious discharge of their duties from their standpoint, they may feel themselves obliged to point out errors (so called) in the doctrines of the Catholic Church. Of this no reasonable man can complain, but for heaven's sake let them first learn exactly what these doctrines are. We will then have less of the wild figments of hysterical imaginations and pandemonium cari catures of beliefs, in defence of which the mightiest intellects that ever adorned our race have found their highest sphere, and of which genius allied with sanctity have ever been the most persuasive and enthusiastic exponents. More Light. This is what those outside the church need. It was this spurred our author on in writing his letters. He wished his Protestant friends to understand the Catholic doctrine of devotion to Mary, the Mother of f d. We hope God' has blessed his writings with abundant fruit in New Brunswick. he has sown good seed and the Lord will see that it brings forth abundant fruit. We h0pe Mr. Quigley will not allow his pen to remain idle, but that he will often use it for the defence of the Church and Catholic truth. He has the talents, the education, the deep reading. Lwe need such laymen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Chase and Her Writings Two years ago, word came to me, like the startling toll of the village church bell, that the life of your daughter Mary was ebbing fast. I broke from busi ness, and sought out the yet unknown way among the silent hills to your retired home. You met me at the door, took my hand, - for you knew me, though you had never seen me, and led me with quiet step to her bedside. The flush of setting life was on her cheek, and the brightness of a glory soon to be revealed shone from her dark eyes, as she said with a smile of earnest greeting, 'i thank thee, for I wished to see thee again before I die.' Then she spoke words of faith and h0pe and joy, so full of beauty and truth. Hard it is, ' she said, 'to part with friends; my cup of life has mantled to overflowing with choice wine; but Heaven now is nigh, and soon I shall drink it new in my Father's kingdom.' And then in animating words of encouragement for the life before me and. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Not that we may fill up a portrait with de cided outlines and full colouring where the Scriptures only give us broken touches. It cannot be without meaning that but One Life in the New Testament is laid before us from infancy to the sepulchre. The silences Of the Bible teach us scarcely less than its revelations and whilst we may affectionately gather and string together the few notices given us Of Mary the mother of Jesus, it must not be for gotten that their very scarcity is among their most significant lessons. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mariology: A Dogmatic Treatise on the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God The Heresy of Nestorianism. - The Ebionites, Photinus, and Paul of Samosata had undermined the dignity of Mary by attacking the Divinity of Jesus Christ; Nestorianism directly assailed the dogma of her divine motherhood. a) Nestorius was a pupil of Theodore of Mopsuestia, 3 who held that the Incarnation involved a complete transformation of the Logos, and that, consequently, Mary was the mother not of God (Oeotokos) but of a mere man, though this man was the bearer of the Divine Logos.4 This Mariological error naturally developed into the Christological heresy that there are two physical persons in Christ.
