Book Synopsis Reverse Engineering of Ancient Metals by : Patricia Silvana Carrizo
Download or read book Reverse Engineering of Ancient Metals written by Patricia Silvana Carrizo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines archaeometallurgy and the preservation of ancient materials for cultural heritage. Through understanding the internal structures of relevant ancient materials, their chemical composition, resistance, hardness, etc., their conservation can be more effectively addressed. Preserving cultural artifacts, such as those from border sites, funerary contexts (burials), railway lines, ceremonial sites and road infrastructure, is necessary to provide perspective to a culture’s trajectory. This book addresses how Reverse Engineering can disseminate knowledge of a culture’s heritage by offering technology that can help restore artifacts so they may be displayed and utilized as educational objects.

Download or read book Advanced Physicochemical Treatment Processes written by Lawrence K. Wang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-11-10 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past thirty years have witnessed a growing worldwide desire that po- tive actions be taken to restore and protect the environment from the degr- ing effects of all forms of pollution—air, water, soil, and noise. Because pollution is a direct or indirect consequence of waste, the seemingly idealistic demand for “zero discharge” can be construed as an unrealistic demand for zero waste. However, as long as waste continues to exist, we can only attempt to abate the subsequent pollution by converting it to a less noxious form. Three major questions usually arise when a particular type of pollution has been id- tified: (1) How serious is the pollution? (2) Is the technology to abate it ava- able? and (3) Do the costs of abatement justify the degree of abatement achieved? This book is one of the volumes of the Handbook of Environmental Engineering series. The principal intention of this series is to help readers f- mulate answers to the last two questions above. The traditional approach of applying tried-and-true solutions to specific pollution problems has been a major contributing factor to the success of en- ronmental engineering, and has accounted in large measure for the establi- ment of a “methodology of pollution control. ” However, the realization of the ever-increasing complexity and interrelated nature of current environmental problems renders it imperative that intelligent planning of pollution abatement systems be undertaken.

Book Synopsis Two-Dimensional Electrophoresis Protocols by : David Sheehan
Download or read book Two-Dimensional Electrophoresis Protocols written by David Sheehan and published by Humana Press. This book was released on 2009-04-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human genome and other large-scale genome sequencing projects have inevitably led to a focus on the proteins encoded by genes. The field of proteomics has grown enormously as a result and a number of high-throughput technologies have now been developed allowing discovery-led investigations of protein populations rather than more traditional hypothesis-led studies on single proteins. These high-throughput techno- gies include gene and protein microarrays, the yeast two-hybrid system, and various mass spectrometry methodologies. However, despite developments and improvements in these technologies, two-dimensional electrophoresis (2DE) remains one of the most widely used approaches. This technique was revolutionised by the development of immobilised pH gradient strips which are now commercially available. This has made possible highly reproducible separations of matched samples. Developments in staining, mass spectr- etry, and bioinformatics supported these developments and have led to a measure of standardisation in design, execution, and analysis of proteomics experiments. This book began life as a proposed update of the excellent volume 2DE Protocols edited by Andrew Link of the University of Washington at Seattle. However, we re- ised that 2DE has undergone major development in aspects of its technology in recent years and we were anxious to reflect these in the present volume. We are also conscious that many researchers have now begun to apply proteomics methodologies to a growing range of biological material and we were anxious to include contributions to reflect the challenges posed in sample preparation in less widely used organisms.
