Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two major reasons for having this symposium. First, Tohoku Univer sity is the place where ultrasound investigations in Japan originated. Starting from the research studies of Professors H. Nukiyama and Y. Kikuchi of To hoku University, Professor J. Saneyoshi of Tokyo Institute of Technology, and Dr. K. Kato of Osaka University - all graduates of Tohoku University - the results spread to all parts of Japan. More recently we have had acoustic macro scopic studies by researchers like Professor N. Chubachi. As regards tissue char acterization, which was the main theme of the symposium, the collaboration among research workers in Japan and the United States started 10 years ago between Professor F. Dunn of the University of Illinois and staff members of Tohoku University and the Tokyo Institute of Technology. So this conference commemorates the lOth anniversary of that joint research effort. The second reason for this conference is that the application of ultrasound has become wide spread and indispensable in the routine clinical activities of medicine. But there have not been many breakthroughs in terms of quantitative and qualitative measurement of the living body tissues. Also, there are many problems with regard to practical application. There are various points that have not been elucidated yet as to the physical and acoustical characteristics of ultrasound itself. The methodology has not in all cases been well established. Therefore, the scientific elucidation of these areas is essential.

Book excerpt: Diagnostic ultrasound (US) is a safe and inexpensive imaging technology that is widely used for qualitative assessment of anatomic features much larger than a wavelength, at least several millimeters in size. Statistical analysis of US envelope signals can provide information about scattering from structures that are smaller than a wavelength, and can therefore provide information on tissue composition and organization that would otherwise require a biopsy. The Homodyned K (HK) distribution is the most general in the family of random walk envelope distributions, which are strongly grounded in a physical modeling of scattering and therefore are ideal for tissue characterization purposes. In this thesis, several issues are considered that relate to the implementation and interpretation of the HK distribution. The physical interpretations of the HK parameters are explored, providing greater context and understanding for clinical applications. A novel parameter estimation algorithm based on the Levenberg-Marquardt curve-fitting algorithm is presented, and it is shown to be more robust in the presence of image artifacts than the gold standard. The effects of a single-element US imaging system on HK parameters are characterized, enabling calibration and therefore system-independent measurements. Finally, two animal studies are presented that use HK parameters to characterize skeletal muscle and liver in mouse models. These results represent progress towards implementing the HK distribution as a system-independent, clinically useful technology.

Book excerpt: Even though ultrasound imaging is widely used in clinical diagnosis and image-guided interventions, the field is far behind other areas of clinical image analysis, such as MRI, CT and X-ray mammography. In this book, non-destructive and non-invasive ultrasound characterization techniques were developed to study the tissue micro-structural details using high frequency spectral ultrasound imaging (SUSI). Spectrum of the backscattered RF ultrasound data contains tissue microstructural properties such as scatterer density, size and concentration and can be estimated with an inverse model. These techniques were explored in in-vitro conditions of acellular and cellular tissue engineered constructs and then on ex-vivo cardiac tissues for their micro-structural characterization. Even though the results from the developed techniques show great promise in in-vitro and ex-vivo settings, additional work needs to be carried out to demonstrate the applicability of the techniques in in-vivo, particularly to translate these techniques into clinic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second E. C. Workshop on Ultrasonic Tissue Characterization was organized for the assessment of research goals and plans as the basis to a grant proposal for a "Concerted Action" which will be forwarded to the European Commission. It should, therefore, not only be considered as a work in progress exhibition which succeeded the former activities within the E. C. (Inventory on Tissue Characterization in Europe and first Workshop). The Steering Group invited a 1 imited group of Institutes to send its group leader and a research fel low in the entitled field, who should expose the overall research program, as wei 1 as the more specific work on tissue characterization by RF signal analysis and spectroscopy. The ultimate goal of the Workshop has been the formulation of schemes of interaction among the Institutes and individuals and the definition of cooperative research programs. The remainder of the groups and some of the groups present are working in the field of analysis and processing of cl inical A- and B-mode echograms (i. e. video signals). Because this work is more closely related to the cl inical diagnostics it was decided that for that reason no preparatory workshop was needed. In the final proposal for the Concerted Action this work wi 1 1 get ample attention. Although not many clinicians were present, their positive interest in the sophisticated analysis techniques and their contribution to the dis cussions again have been a most valuable and stimulating experience.

Book excerpt: Due to the ever increasing interest in the use of non-invasive ultrasonic methods in medical diagnostics on the one hand and the specific effects of ultrasound in medical therapy on the other, the questions of safety and optimal applications are topical and of great importance. For this reason the symposium "Ultrasound Interaction in Biology and Medicine," initiated and supported by the "International Organization of Medical Physics," took place. The organizers were the Institute of Applied Biophysics of the Martin-Luther-University, Halle (Saale), German Democratic Republic, in association with the Society for Physical and Mathematical Biology of the GDR along with other scientific organizations. Renowned and internationally noted specialists in the field of ultrasonics reported on the latest findings regarding the biological interaction of ultrasound, which promised future improvements in the methods of ultrasonic diagnostics and gave and up-to-date insight into the biological effectiveness of ultrasound. We are pleased to be able to publish selected contributions to this symposium collected in one volume. The methods of investigation, theoretical considerations and results concerning the interaction of ultrasound on molecular, cellular and system levels contained herein will remain up-to-date for a long time to come, providing thought provoking material for further inter-disciplinary basic research and medical application.
