Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The flow through the tip clearance region of a transonic compressor rotor (NASA rotor 37) was computed and compared to aerodynamic probe and laser anemometer data. Tip clearance effects were modeled both by gridding the clearance gap and by using a simple periodicity model across the ungridded gap. The simple model was run with both the full gap height, and with half the gap height to simulate a vena-contracta effect. Comparisons between computed and measured performance maps and downstream profiles were used to validate the models and to assess the effects of gap height on the simple clearance model. Recommendations were made concerning the use of the simple clearance model. Detailed comparisons were made between the gridded clearance gap solution and the laser anemometer data near the tip at two operating points. The computer results agreed fairly well with the data but overpredicted the extent of the casing separation and underpredicted the wake decay rate. The computations were then used to describe the interaction of the tip vortex, the passage shock, and the casing boundary layer.

This book was released on 1987 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modelling the complex flowfield in a transonic axial compressor rotor is a considerable but worthwhile challenge for flow prediction methods. This paper describes a computer code aimed at solving the equations of three dimensional viscous compressible flow in turbomachine geometries. The code is applied to the study of the flowfield in a transonic axial compressor rotor at design speed at both maximum flow and towards stall. The rotor was designed at DFVLR and tested using laser two-focus velocimetry. The rotor has a hub-tip ratio of 0.5 and design speed of 20260 rpm. At the design point the rotor pressure ratio is 1.626 and the mass flow 17.1 kg/s. The predicted flowfield is compared with the laser measurements and the performance of the code discussed. In addition the discussion highlights the changes in the predicted endwall and tip clearance flows as the rotor operating point is moved towards stall.
Book Synopsis Transonic Compressor Blade Tip Flow Visualization on a Water Table by : Alan K. Byrd
Download or read book Transonic Compressor Blade Tip Flow Visualization on a Water Table written by Alan K. Byrd and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shock structure at the tip of a transonic compressor rotor was investigated on a water table. A four bladed cascade model was used and the wave pattern was examined at variable incidence, flow turning angles and back-pressures. Froude numbers, (equivalent to Mach numbers in the analogous two dimensional gas flow), in the range 1.6 to 1.74 resulted in an oblique shock between the blade passages starting from the leading edge pressure side of the blading. Qualitative agreement of the shock structure with earlier tests using the same blading in a transonic blow-down tunnel was observed, leading to the conclusion that the shock present in the compressor would be oblique and not normal as was previously assumed. Keywords: Transonic flow; Compressor blade tips; Cascade flow visualization. (Theses).

Book Synopsis Dawes and Denton Codes Applied to a Transonic Compressor Rotor by : T. W. von Backström
Download or read book Dawes and Denton Codes Applied to a Transonic Compressor Rotor written by T. W. von Backström and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three-dimensional viscous transonic time marching Denton code L0SS3D, and Dawes code BTOB3D are applied to the first stage rotor of the NACA 5-stage transonic compressor. Computing time per solution on a mini-supercomputer was about 9 hours for a mesh of 65 000 points. LOSS3D predicted pressure ratio and loss distributions reasonably well at design point, but did not quite satisfy the convergence criteria. BT0B3D tended to overpredict the total pressure ratio over the outer half of span due to an underprediction of loss in the complicated separated flow region triggered by shock boundary layer interaction on the suction surface, but prediction was good at 90% speed where shock boundary layer interaction was less severe. The use of a computationally convenient excessively large tip clearance is not recommended when shock-boundary layer interaction is expected, especially at off-design conditions.
