Book Synopsis Timewalker by : Thomas F. Monteleone
Download or read book Timewalker written by Thomas F. Monteleone and published by JournalStone. This book was released on 2022-03-18 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Always an interesting and often powerful writer.” —Science Fiction Chronicle A generation or so after the great bones of dinosaurs had been discovered, men of science became engaged in a frenetic search to uncover more and more specimens of these great beasts who walked the earth uncountable millions of years ago. Two men, in particular, became well-known for their fossil-hunting exploits in the wild west of the 1870s. Their names were Othniel Charles Marsh of Yale University and Edward Drinker Cope from the University of Pennsylvania. They formed and commandeered expeditions into what were then barely inhabited American Indian territories to exhume the fossilized remains of previously unknown species. Between them, they discovered and named more than 130 new dinosaurs. But their scientific fervor also created an intense rivalry between the two paleontologists, which simmered throughout their careers. Both men were obsessed with learning (and stealing) each other’s techniques and methods of discovering long buried remains. Timewalker is a bit of alternate history of how Edward Cope may have had some unexpected assistance. “Thomas Monteleone has a gift for complex characters and original story concepts.”—Library Journal

Book Synopsis Comics through Time [4 volumes] by : M. Keith Booker
Download or read book Comics through Time [4 volumes] written by M. Keith Booker and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-10-28 with total page 2104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing especially on American comic books and graphic novels from the 1930s to the present, this massive four-volume work provides a colorful yet authoritative source on the entire history of the comics medium. Comics and graphic novels have recently become big business, serving as the inspiration for blockbuster Hollywood movies such as the Iron Man series of films and the hit television drama The Walking Dead. But comics have been popular throughout the 20th century despite the significant effects of the restrictions of the Comics Code in place from the 1950s through 1970s, which prohibited the depiction of zombies and use of the word "horror," among many other rules. Comics through Time: A History of Icons, Idols, and Ideas provides students and general readers a one-stop resource for researching topics, genres, works, and artists of comic books, comic strips, and graphic novels. The comprehensive and broad coverage of this set is organized chronologically by volume. Volume 1 covers 1960 and earlier; Volume 2 covers 1960–1980; Volume 3 covers 1980–1995; and Volume 4 covers 1995 to the present. The chronological divisions give readers a sense of the evolution of comics within the larger contexts of American culture and history. The alphabetically arranged entries in each volume address topics such as comics publishing, characters, imprints, genres, themes, titles, artists, writers, and more. While special attention is paid to American comics, the entries also include coverage of British, Japanese, and European comics that have influenced illustrated storytelling of the United States or are of special interest to American readers.
Book Synopsis An Assessment of Precision Time and Time Interval Science and Technology by : National Research Council
Download or read book An Assessment of Precision Time and Time Interval Science and Technology written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-12-04 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge of time is essential to precise knowledge of location, and for this reason the Navy, with its need to navigate on the high seas, has historically played an important role in the development and application of advanced time realization and dissemination technologies. Discoveries coming from basic research funded by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) lie at the heart of today's highest performance atomic clocks, Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) expertise played a role in developing the space-qualified atomic clocks that enable the Global Positioning System (GPS), and the U.S. Naval Observatory (USNO) maintains and disseminates the standard of time for all of the Department of Defense (DOD). The Navy has made major investments in most aspects of precision time and time interval (PTTI) science and technology, although specific PTTI-related research has also been funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and non-DOD agencies such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the Department of Commerce. Navy funding, largely through ONR, has a history of being an early enabler of key new developments. Judicious funding decisions by the Navy-particularly by ONR program officers-have underpinned most of the major advances in PTTI science and technology (S&T) in the last 50 years. PTTI is important to modern naval needs, and indeed to all the armed Services, for use in both navigation and communications. Precise time synchronization is needed to efficiently determine the start of a code sequence in secure communications, to perform navigation, and to locate the position of signal emitters. Precise frequency control is required in communications for spectrum utilization and frequency-hopped spread-spectrum techniques. There are many examples of essential military operations that depend on PTTI and could benefit from improvements in PTTI technology. These include: -GPS clocks and autonomous operations, -Weapon system four-dimensional coordination, -GPS antijamming, -Network-centric warfare, and -Secure military communications. This report summarizes that reductions in the size, weight, and power requirements and increases in the ruggedness of PTTI devices without sacrificing performance would put more accurate and precise timekeeping in the hands of the warrior, improving capabilities in all of the above operations.
