Book excerpt: This text covers Bauman’s contribution to sociology and social theory. This ideal teaching text analyzes Bauman's shift from a sociology of postmodernity to liquid modernity, and provides a critical assessment of the contemporary Bauman, appraising his novel theory of liquid modernity in terms of its implications for self-identity, interpersonal relationships, culture, communications, and the broad-ranging institutional transformations associated with globalization. In addition to various extracts from Bauman's work, the book also contains a spirited reply from Zygmunt Bauman to both his sympathetic and unsympathetic critics. Bauman concludes by providing a new perspectives on his theory of liquid modernity, its differentiation from the modernity/postmodernity debate and its relation to current developments in contemporary social theory.

Book excerpt: This book addresses, and at the same time reflects, the impact of Max Weber on both the social sciences and on critical theory's critique of the social sciences. Weber's conception of 'vocation' is a guiding thread unifying concerns about the nature, scope and limits of theoretical thinking among social scientists, whether supportive or critical of Weber. Not surprisingly, the source of many of these concerns, whether intended or unintended, biographical or situational, is the ambiguous legacy of Weber himself. Wilson's interrogation of Weber's thought in articles and essays over the past 30 years, supplemented by Kemple's insights, makes a strong case for the claim that we do indeed live in 'the age of Weber'.

Book excerpt: Theoretical physics has reached an impasse that many feel is a dead end. As the odds of finding evidence for supersymmetry starts to fade, “new” theories have emerged such as “The Multiverse”, “Extra Dimensions”, and “Dimensional Transmutation”. These theories attempt to explain the inexplicable yet at the same time fail to explain the explainable. Many physicists are left frustrated and wondering aloud… How could we have travelled so far down the wrong path? “Any intelligent fool can make things bigger and more complex. It takes a touch of genius - and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction.” ~ Albert Einstein Engineers know that the right answer is usually a simple one. As Einstein would put it, “The grand aim of all science is to cover the greatest number of empirical facts by logical deduction from the smallest number of hypotheses or axioms.” Gordon’s theory of everything starts with only two postulates; the massless bosons called “Gordon Omnipresent Dots” or “GOD entities” and the E0 energy associated with their initial alignment. These primordial postulates are the only building blocks of a model that explains the inevitable course of events that created our universe. The mathematics created within this process corrects the postulates used to develop the theories of relativity and quantum mechanics which can finally be united and subsequently applied to the infinitesimally small and the infinitely large. We currently use parameters such as distance, time, straight lines, velocity, electric charge, energy fields, and mass. Gordon’s theory of everything begins at a time when none of these parameters existed (prior to the Big Bang). It takes nothing for granted as a predestined process unfolds creating these parameters as they come into existence defined by the evolving mathematics. The Gordon model reveals that energy exists in three separate Gordon energy states described by “The GOD equation”. The interaction between these energy states result in the formation of energy fi elds and the creation of all forces. Most importantly, the structure of space-time from the previously unrecognized G0 energy state provides the solid foundation upon which we are able to build a new understanding of everything in the universe. The simplicity and elegance of Gordon’s theory of everything will astonish everyone as everything falls into place. The purpose of this book is to put the field of physics on a theoretically sound foundation. The structures of the first few fundamental particles and the energy fields they generate are just the beginning. You will have the opportunity to make major contributions. Starting where this book leaves off at the up quark and electron, the race is on to find the internal structure of a neutron and all the particles of the standard model. Don’t be left behind…Be among the first to read Scott S Gordon’s, “The GOD Entity: Gordon’s Theory of Everything”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electronic Noses and Olfaction 2000 reflects the state of progress toward the development and application of electronic instruments called electronic noses (e-noses). These instruments are generally based on arrays of sensors for volatile chemicals with broadly tuned selectivity, coupled to appropriate pattern recognition systems. They are capable of detecting and discriminating a number of different simple and complex odors, such as the headspace of coffee and olive oil, as well as being able to perform simple multicomponent gas analysis. Written by international scientists, engineers, technologists, clinicians, investigators, and instrument manufacturers working in the applied research of e-noses as well as in the applications of olfaction and taste, this volume is essential reading for anyone who wants a review of the latest developments in odor sensors, instrumentation and signal processing, and their medical, agricultural, and food-related applications.
