Book Synopsis Dave Brubeck's Time Out by : Stephen A. Crist
Download or read book Dave Brubeck's Time Out written by Stephen A. Crist and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dave Brubeck's Time Out ranks among the most popular, successful, and influential jazz albums of all time. Released by Columbia in 1959, alongside such other landmark albums as Miles Davis's Kind of Blue and Charles Mingus's Mingus Ah Um, Time Out became one of the first jazz albums to be certified platinum, while its featured track, "Take Five," became the best-selling jazz single of the twentieth century, surpassing one million copies. In addition to its commercial successes, the album is widely recognized as a pioneering endeavor into the use of odd meters in jazz. With its opening track "Blue Rondo la Turk" written in 9/8, its hit single "Take Five" in 5/4, and equally innovative uses of the more common 3/4 and 4/4 meters on other tracks, Time Out has played an important role in the development of modern jazz. In this book, author Stephen A. Crist draws on nearly fifteen years of archival research to offer the most thorough examination to date of this seminal jazz album. Supplementing his research with interviews with key individuals, including Brubeck's widow Iola and daughter Catherine, as well as interviews conducted with Brubeck himself prior to his passing in 2012, Crist paints a complete picture of the album's origins, creation, and legacy. Couching careful analysis of each of the album's seven tracks within historical and cultural contexts, he offers fascinating insights into the composition and development of some of the album's best-known tunes. From Brubeck's 1958 State Department-sponsored tour, during which he first encountered the Turkish aksak rhythms that would form the basis of "Blue Rondo la Turk," to the backstage jam session that planted the seeds for "Take Five," Crist sheds an exciting new light on one of the most significant albums in jazz history.
Book Synopsis Time Out Rome by : Editors of Time Out
Download or read book Time Out Rome written by Editors of Time Out and published by Time Out Guides. This book was released on 2011-08-03 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by local experts, Time Out Rome provides extensive coverage of the major sights — and then goes much further. Featuring everything from born-again trattorie to the burgeoning apertif trend, it offers visitors the chance to experience the Eternal City as the Romans do. History in Rome is not confined to museums, basilicas and galleries — it tumbles out everywhere. And though the city is reassuringly compact, this does not stop the cultural onslaught from being utterly bewildering and exhausting. While some travelers may have to face the fact that they probably won't see everything, it is also important not to shut oneself up inside all day looking at collections and sites or you will miss all that the outdoor scene has to offer. Time Out Rome helps travelers navigate through the cobblestone streets, so that they can eat, drink and shop like the natives. Suggested side trips out of town are also explored.
Book Synopsis Boy @ the Window by : Donald Earl Collins
Download or read book Boy @ the Window written by Donald Earl Collins and published by . This book was released on 2013-11 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a preteen Black male growing up in Mount Vernon, New York, there were a series of moments, incidents and wounds that caused me to retreat inward in despair and escape into a world of imagination. For five years I protected my family secrets from authority figures, affluent Whites and middle class Blacks while attending an unforgiving gifted-track magnet school program that itself was embroiled in suburban drama. It was my imagination that shielded me from the slights of others, that enabled my survival and academic success. It took everything I had to get myself into college and out to Pittsburgh, but more was in store before I could finally begin to break from my past. "Boy @ The Window" is a coming-of-age story about the universal search for understanding on how any one of us becomes the person they are despite-or because of-the odds. It's a memoir intertwined with my own search for redemption, trust, love, success-for a life worth living. "Boy @ The Window" is about one of the most important lessons of all: what it takes to overcome inhumanity in order to become whole and human again.

Book Synopsis THE DIVINE TIMEOUT by : Paul Daniel Rodak
Download or read book THE DIVINE TIMEOUT written by Paul Daniel Rodak and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-07-26 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if the COVID19 Pandemic is really intended as a wake-up call to mankind from God? "The Divine Timeout"! What if it is an opportunity to individually, and collectively, reevaluate our priorities, and place our world and house in order, before God determines our final fate? Perhaps, it will be the end times if we persist in our sinful behavior. Or continued life on earth with remorse and repentance for our malignant and corrupt nature as a world, society, and culture, and begging His Mercy, being the only course determining our future state of existence. Which path would you follow? Proceeding down the same track which mankind as a whole is on now, or the latter following the route of repentance, remorse, forgiveness, and asking for mercy? Only we can determine our own fate. God has provided each of us a Free Will which enables us to determine our actions in this life, be they good or bad. We alone, individually, will determine if our life is judged by the Just God or the Merciful God, and our destination is hell or heaven. God has given us an opportunity to grow ever closer to him. Like the Father in the parable of the prodigal son, God is always ready to rush to us whenever, we want him in our lives, and embrace us with his love and mercy, and take us back to our heavenly home. "For God so loved the world that He sent his only begotten son, so that whoever believes in him will be saved." John 3:16 The word eternal means constant or forever. The Bible refers to the final judgment that God will declare on individuals. This judgment will determine our state for eternity. It's important to realize that all judgment comes through Jesus, the Son of God. "For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son" (John 5:22 NKJ). Our decision regarding Jesus determines our eternal judgment. If we accept Jesus as our Lord, we will spend eternity with God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. If we reject Jesus, as our personal Savior, we will spend eternity in the lake of fire. Notice how unbelievers will be eternally judged: And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. And any one not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire. (Rev. 20:12,15 NKJ) If people do all kinds of good works, but fail to accept Jesus as their personal Savior, they will be judged to spend eternity in the lake of fire which is commonly known as hell. Jesus will also judge Christians for their works while living on the earth (Rom. 14:10; 2 Cor. 5:10). This judgment shall determine their placement in the Kingdom of God forever. The life we are living now will actually determine our eternal state; this is the meaning of eternal judgment. Please make use of The Divine Timeout to reaffirm, recommit, and rekindle our Faith and Love in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and our fellow man, so we will be prepared to meet him upon his Triumphant Return to Earth and eternally enjoy the fruits of his love for us and ours for him in Heaven. God Bless You.
