The relevant non-steady boundary layer equations with their space and time boundary conditions are transformed into a coupled set of partial differential equations. These equations, for the case of zero pressure gradient, are linearized and the numerical solutions obtained for both zero and non-zero heat transfer at the wall for 0

This book was released on 1990 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interaction of an impinging shock with the bow-shock generated by a blunt geometry is examined numerically for hypersonic (Mach 8, perfect gas) flows with modified Steger-Warming flux-split scheme. The modifications are designed to reduce numerical dissipation in the boundary layer thus improving the resolution and accuracy of the resulting algorithm. The full 2-D Navier- Stokes equations are solved in finite-volume formulation with central differencing for viscous terms and residual driven line Gauss-Seidel relaxation for time advancement. Grid resolution studies are performed. For a Type IV interaction, comparison with surface pressure and heat-transfer rates display good overall agreement with experimental values. For a Type III+ interaction, a detailed comparison is made with experimental surface quantities and a computation with Van Leer's flux-splitting algorithm. The peak amplification of pressure is modestly overpredicted with the current algorithm. The computed peak heat transfer is comparable to that obtained in previous research with Van Leer's splitting, although anomalous behavior is observed in the vicinity of the stagnation point. This behavior may be eliminated with appropriate corrections.

Hodge and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of an investigation of hypersonic laminar boundary-layer/shock-wave interactions using the method of MacCormack to solve the time-dependent compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Comparisons of the numerical solutions with experimental data were made to ascertain the validity of the numerical method and to identify regions of anomalous behavior. The algorithm gave good results when applied to hypersonic laminar interactions that caused either small or no separated regions and marginal performance when applied to hypersonic laminar interactions having large regions of separated flow. The extents of the separated regions in interactions having large regions of separated flow were underpredicted when compared with experimental data. The predicted wall heat-transfer rates exhibited the correct qualitative trend but not the experimentally measured quantitative values. Consideration of the effects of needed stabilizing terms as well as grid resolution suggests inadequate mesh spacing in the longitudinal direction as the cause of the aforementioned anomalies. If inadequate mesh spacing (and the corresponding lack of support for every term of the Navier-Stokes equations) is a prime cause of the cited discrepancies between the numerical results and the experimental data, then the needed reduction of several orders of magnitude in delta x, would increase CPU time and core storage requirements to untenable levels. Book Synopsis Axisymmetric Hypersonic Flow with Strong Viscous Interaction by : John Webster Ellinwood
Download or read book Axisymmetric Hypersonic Flow with Strong Viscous Interaction written by John Webster Ellinwood and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stewartson's theory for axisymmetric hypersonic flow of a model gas with strong viscous interaction and strong shock wave is extended to power-law viscosity variation, nonunit Prandtl number, and body shapes other than power laws. For power-law bodies, the generalized theory is obtained in closed form without recourse to numerical integration. In addition, numerical computations are presented for axisymmetric flow over a three-quarter power-law body with strong shock wave and viscous interactions that range from weak to strong. (Author).
Book Synopsis Viscous Interactions at Hypersonic Speed by : Michael S. Holden

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work has been directed toward investigations of fundamental aerothermal phenomena in hypersonic flow, with particular emphasis on viscous/inviscid interaction phenomena. The experimental studies were conducted to examine the changes in the structure at the base of a hypersonic turbulent boundary layer as it is subjected to a strong self induced pressure gradient in regions of shock wave/boundary layer interaction. The initial phase of the theoretical program was directed toward summarizing existing techniques for obtaining Navier/Stokes solutions for laminar flow over flat plates in hypersonic flow. In the experimental program, surface and flow field measurements were made to examine the detailed flow mechanics associated with turbulent boundary layer separation over a large cone flare model at Mach 11, 13, and 16 for Reynold numbers up to 100 million. Solutions have been obtained to Navier-Stokes equations for the laminar flow over the leading edge of a sharp flat plate in Mach 16 flow for highly cooled wall conditions using a modified MacCormack/Shang fully explicit formulation. To obtain a stable converged solution it was necessary to reduce the grid size close to the leading edge to the order of the mean free path, and typically 20,000 time steps were required to achieve convergence. However, once obtained, the solution was a good agreement with experiment.

This book was released on 1967 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytical formulation is presented of the problem of hypersonic viscous interaction on a very slender body of revolution with a thick boundary layer and mass transfer. Particular attention is directed to the establishment of the mathematical restrictions necessary to ensure the existence of similar solutions of the laminary boundary-layer equations for this class of problems. Yasuhara's analysis is extended to include surface mass transfer and binary mixture effects. It is shown that when the boundary-layer thickness is of the same order of magnitude as the characteristic body dimension, rigorous similarity is possible only for three-quarter-power-law bodies. This is in agreement with Yasuhara's earlier conclusions. Similar solutions to the boundary-layer growth equations exist when the transverse curvature expression is a function of the similarity variable. The criterion for the existence of similar solutions for the problem of hypersonic viscous interaction is that there must be a definite relationship between body surface shape and surface injection velocity. Book Synopsis Hypersonic Viscous Interaction Theory for Slender Axisymmetric Bodies by : Harold Mirels
Download or read book Hypersonic Viscous Interaction Theory for Slender Axisymmetric Bodies written by Harold Mirels and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effects of viscous interaction are investigated for hypersonic flow over slender axisymmetric bodies. The entire range of interaction, from weak to strong, is considered for nose bluntness not greater than a 3/4 power law. Extensive numerical results are given for the self-similar flow over a 3/4 power law body. These results are correlated and used in a local similarity procedure for finding viscous interaction over arbitrary body shapes. Analytical expressions are derived for weak interaction on a cone and strong interaction on power law bodies. Following Dewey's approach, the local similarity procedure is simplified to a series of algebraic equations. These are solved for flow of air over a cone. Numerical results are presented for cone surface pressure, shear, heat transfer, drag and displacement thickness in all interaction regimes. The drag is in good average agreement with available experimental cone drag data. The analytical development is a unified treatment of viscous interaction effects on two-dimensional as well as axisymmetric bodies. Numerical results for wedges are included. (Author).
