Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written with a dual purpose, as a reference book for practicing engineers and as a textbook for students of prestressed concrete. It represents the fifth generation of books on this subject written by its author. Significant additions and revisions have been made in this edition. Chapters 2 and 3 contain new material intended to assist the engineer in understanding factors affecting the time-dependent properties of the reinforcement and concrete used in prestressing concrete, as well as to facilitate the evaluation of their effects on prestress loss and deflection. Flexural strength, shear strength, and bond of prestressed concrete members were treated in a single chapter in the of flexural strength has third edition. Now, in the fourth edition, the treatment been expanded, with more emphasis on strain compatibility, and placed in Chapter 5 which is devoted to this subject alone. Chapter 6 of this edition, on flexural-shear strength, torsional strength, and bond of prestressed reinforce ment, was expanded to include discussions of Compression Field Theory and torsion that were not treated in the earlier editions. In similar fashion, expanded discussions of loss of prestress, deflection, and partial prestressing now are presented separately, in Chapter 7. Minor additions and revisions have been made to the material contained in the remaining chapters with the exception of xv xvi I PREFACE Chapter 17. This chapter, which is devoted to construction considerations, has important new material on constructibility and tolerances as related to prestressed concrete.

An important part of those concrete bridges is to a large extent prefabricated. Precast concrete enables all the advantages of an industrialized process to be fully utilized. Contemporary concrete mixtures are used to realize high-strength bridge girders and piers that exactly meet the requirements set, both structurally and aesthetically, with a small ecological footprint. Sustainable and durable! On the construction site, there is no need for complex formwork, the execution time is drastically reduced and where road, water and rail traffic on or under the bridge has to be temporarily interrupted, it is only minimally inconvenienced during the execution of the project. There is a wide variety of prefabricated bridges. In 2004, the fib commission on prefabrication already published the Bulletin 29 Precast concrete bridges which, in addition to the history of prefabricated bridges, also gave an overview of the different bridge types and structural systems. This document elaborates on one specific structural system: the continuous bridge. Task Group 6.5 "Precast concrete bridges" discusses in detail how to achieve continuity over the piers with precast elements. This bulletin bundles the experiences of experts in the field of bridge design so that less experienced designers would be able to identify the points of attention and make a correct design. In addition to the theoretical considerations, the principles are tested against three realizations in the USA and Europe. Commission 6 thanks the Co-Conveners Maher Tadros and Hugo Corres and all active members of the Task Group for sharing their knowledge and experience and for the successful realization of this bulletin.

Book excerpt: Serviceability failures of concrete structures involving excessive cracking or deflection are relatively common, even in structures that comply with code requirements. This is often as a result of a failure to adequately account for the time-dependent deformations of concrete in the design of the structure. The serviceability provisions embodied in

Book excerpt: A simple procedure for the nonlinear analysis of externally and/or internally prestressed reinforced concrete beams including the time-dependent effects caused by creep and shrinkage of concrete and relaxation of prestressing steel is presented. The procedure is capable of tracing the structural response of these structures through their service load history as well as throughout the elastic, inelastic, and ultimate load ranges. Sections can change throughout the length of the member and the variation of the material properties within the element is accommodated. The section is divided into concrete parts of different materials and the reinforcement steel is divided into layers of different properties. Each concrete part and steel layer is considered in a uniaxial state of stress. Time dependent variation of concrete properties is considered. The instantaneous loss in the prestressing force due to friction and anchor setting in posttensioned structures is also recognized. The time domain for which the analysis is required is divided into a number of time intervals. At any instant, the instantaneous changes in stresses and deformations are calculated and added to the existing values. For any time interval, the gradual change in stresses and deformations are determined and added to update the existing values. Also for each time interval, nonlinear equilibrium equations which are valid for the current material properties are set up and solved using the displacement method. An initial stiffness method combined with the unbalanced load iterations for each load increment or time interval is used for the nonlinear equilibrium. A series of numerical examples are tested and comparisons are made with other analytical and experimental data. Numerical data from the nonlinear and time-dependent analyses of prestressed posttensioned reinforced concrete simple beams are presented.

Book excerpt: Indeed, this essential working reference for practicing civil engineers uniquely reflects today's gradual transition from allowable stress design to Load and Resistance Factor Design by presenting LRFD specifications - developed from research requested by AASH-TO and initiated by the NCHRP - which spell out new provisions in areas ranging from load models and load factors to bridge substructure elements and foundations.

Book excerpt: The concept of precast segmental bridges is not new: the first application documented was from the mid-1940s, designed by Eugene Freyssinet and built over the river Marne near Luzancy in France, between 1944 and 1946. Although innovative, it also contained traditional wet concrete joints between the members. The impressive breakthrough came slightly later with the introduction of match-cast joints by Jean Muller, first for a bridge near Buffalo (USA) in 1952, and later for a bridge across the River Seine at Choisy le Roi near Paris in 1962. This opened the way for a large number of new developments in terms of design, production approaches and construction techniques, and precast prestressed concrete segmental construction became rapidly one of the most efficient and successful bridge construction methods all over the world. These developments are still evolving, but the interaction between design, production and construction is a critical factor for success: the interaction creates opportunities to optimise the scheme, but at the same time is crucial to ensure safety, especially during construction, when large weights are moved, placed and secured, frequently at substantial heights. Engineers of all disciplines involved should interact during the development and realisation of precast segmental bridge (PSB) schemes, to conclude the optimum method statement and consequently check all the intermediate steps of the method statement in terms of stress, stiffness, stability, production and constructability. With the ongoing development of the PSB concept, and consequently moving limits in terms of dimensions, it was concluded to be appropriate to develop a Guide to good practice for the PSB construction method. The present report was developed by an integrated team of engineers with roots in design, structural engineering, production and construction, and provides a valuable source of knowledge, experience, recommendations and examples, with particular emphasis on the fib Model Code for Concrete Structures 2010 and fib Bulletins 20, 33, 48 and 75. I would like to thank all the members of Task Group 1.7, all the individual contributors from outside Task Group 1.7, and the reviewers of the Technical Council of the fib for their contribution to this Guide to good practice. In particular, I would like to thank Gopal Srinivasan and Marcos Sanchez, who, apart from their own contributions, did the final editorial work for this bulletin.
