This requires new philosophical approaches, as the philosophy of sport, so far, has been dominated by topics of elite sports. Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled On Time and Festivity: A Study of Chinese New Year Films Submitted by Law Yuk Wa for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in April 2007 This is a study of Chinese New Year films or hesuipian (賀歲片) in Hong Kong from the 1950s to the present. Chinese New Year films are shown every year in Hong Kong during the Lunar New Year period. They are usually known to be comedies that are carnivalesque in nature, formulaic in narrative structure, extravagant in visual styles with exaggerated characterization. They are stories and styles which repeat every year without exhaustion and yet always receive popularity. However, these highly commercialized films are not simply purchasable entertainments that are underrated by critics and audience in terms of cultural values; they have been showing specific social and cultural phenomena that are only found in Hong Kong. Through a combination of theoretical discussion and chronological account of the films, this thesis attempts to look at how this festive cinematic experience of watching Chinese New Year films demonstrates the complex relationship among temporality, ritualistic behaviours, consumerist culture, a sense of locality and an unconscious practice of Chinese traditions in a collective sense. This study starts with an introduction of the origin and the traditional celebrations of Chinese New Year. Two types of visual expressions, Chinese New Year prints (nianhua) and Chinese New Year films will be introduced as two ways of visualizing festivity - one in the pre-modern time and the other in the contemporary society. In Chapter Two, various notions of time will be discussed in order to construct a theoretical framework concerning temporality and the timely experiences in relation to the cultural unconscious in the modern world. Chapter Three and Four will be a chronological account of Chinese New Year films made in Hong Kong from pre-1950s to the present (2006) with the examination of the archival materials, industrial changes and the filmic texts, as well as an analysis of the social, economic and political changes in the Hong Kong society. It is found that through this timely filmic experience, the local people are punctually reminded of and re-producing a sense of Chineseness that is specific to Hong Kong. The notions of home, family and festive celebrations are the imagined affective attachment to a distant sense of Chineseness that Hong Kong people collectively generate in the filmic experience. In Chapter Five, the discussion will shift to Mainland China where the emergence of Chinese New Year films represents a new era in Chinese cinema in recent years. By focusing on the films of the Mainland director Feng Xiaogang as well as a brief account of other Mainland festive films, it is argued that although it has been generally agreed that the emergence of Chinese New Year films in the Mainland is caused by the imported Hong Kong films since the 1990s, these festive cinematic texts are strategic cultural products in the development of socialist economy in the form of commercialization of Chinese cinema which re-create Chineseness for the sake of constructing the nationalistic sentiment in the post-Deng era.
