Book excerpt: Excerpt from Timber Resources for America's Future The report of the Timber Resource Review is in the nature of a State-of - the-union message by the Forest Service on our national timber supplies. This comprehensive appraisal of the timber situation in the United States was started early in 1952. About a year and a half was devoted to planning the project; a year to field surveys and collection of data; a year to compila tion, interpretation, and preparation of the pre liminary report; and another year and a half to review and revision of the preliminary report and preparation of this final report. The Timber Resource Review is the latest in a series of overall timber appraisals in which the Forest Service has shared. The most recent one prior to this study was in 1945. One of the unique features of the present undertaking is that it was planned and executed in the field with the wide spread collaboration of a great number of States, forest industries, and individuals. Although this has engendered some delays, they have been more than offset by better planning, by more intensive surveys than the Forest Service could have under taken by itself, and it is hoped by more widespread understanding and acceptance of the findings. Man is hard at work building satellites to circle the Earth and harnessing atomic anergy. You may well wonder how timber fits into such a scientific atmosphere, why we should know or even care how the trees grow today, why we should be concerned at all about timber in the future. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forest Resources of New Hampshire Through the mcsweeney-mcnary Act of 1928, Congress authorized the Secretary of Agriculture to conduct a comprehensive survey of the forest resources of the United States. This work was assigned to the Forest Service. The purposes of this forest survey are (1) to make a field inventory of the present supply of standing timber; (2) to ascertain its current rate of growth, (3) to determine how much it is being reduced through industrial and domestic uses, fire, and other causes, (4) to estimate the present consumption and the probable future trends in requirements for forest products, and (5) to interpret and cor relate these findings so that they may be useful in formulating private and public forest policies. Results of this first comprehensive survey of the forest resources of New Hampshire are reported here. However, other estimates of the State 3 forest inventory have been made in the past, the most recent being the Reappraisal of 1945, which was made by the Forest Service in cooperation with the American Forestry Associa ion These previous estimates were based largely on general knowledge and on the judgment of informed persons; the present survey is based on a scientifically designed procedure using aerial photographs and ground plots. Furthermore, some specifications used in this report are different from those used in previous studies. For these reasons changes in forest conditions in New Hampshire cannot be determined by comparing this report with previ ous estimates. Valid comparisons of changing forest conditions in New Hampshire will be possible when the same area is resurveyed in the future. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Look at Black Walnut Timber Resources and Industries As colonists moved westward from the Seaboard States into the Central States, they found black walnut even more plentiful. Trees were reported up to 6 feet in diameter, and 150 feet tall. The wood was so clear and easy to split, and so durable, that it was used extensively for fence rails. When Abe Lincoln was splitting fence rails, he probably split up many a walnut tree. The wood was used for building cabins, and later for trim in fine homes. Walnut has always been the preferred wood for gunstocks. Pennsylvania gunsmiths used it for the long rifles that became famous in the wars with the Indians and the British. During the Civil War, and later during World War I and World War II, the demand for walnut for gunstocks was so great that it put a heavy drain on the resource of this timber. The major use for black walnut today, both at home and abroad, is in furniture manufacture. One main mark of walnut's distinction is that many other fine woods are stained to make them look like walnut. Walnut wood ranging from rich dark browns to pleasing lighter browns can be finished without stain. Under a good finish, the grain gives the wood those ineffable highlights, chang ing with the light and the angle of view, that few other woods possess. American black walnut now is in strong demand in both American and foreign markets. The sharply expanding foreign market and the steady domestic market have raised questions as to the adequacy of the present and future supplies of black walnut timber. As a result, numerous measures to increase or sustain the supply have been taken. These include the establishment of a quota on the export of walnut logs and bolts, requests that the domestic veneer industry cut thinner veneers, and expanded re search and extension work to encourage walnut culture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The School Book of Forestry Our forests, with their billions of trees, are the backbone of agriculture, the skeleton of lum bering, and the heart of industry. Even now, in spite of their depletion, they are the cream of our natural resources. They furnish wood for the nation, pasture for thousands of cattle and sheep, and water supply for countless cities and farms. They are the dominions of wildlife. Millions of birds, game animals, and fish live in the forests and the forest streams. The time is coming when our forests will be the greatest playgrounds of America. It is necessary that we preserve, protect, and expandour timber lands. By so doing we shall provide for the needs of future generations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lumber Recovery From Old-Growth Coast Douglas-Fir The volume of commercial Coast Douglas-fir sawtimber is estimated to be in excess of 394 billion board feet. About 10 billion board feet of Coast Douglas fir is harvested annually. This is about 55 percent of the total softwood lumber production in the United States. There is an urgent need for better methods of appraising the quality of this important timber resource. Estimates of the recovery that can be obtained from Coast Douglas-fir sawtimber are needed by forest land managers, timber buyers, and timber processors for efficient utilization of the resource for lumber, veneer, pulp, or other products. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of American Timber Law In the newspapers there has recently appeared what pur ported to be a true account of the experiences of an Indian who, in the autumn of 1915, became separated from his com panions in the extensive uninhabited region south of Hudson Bay. Surrounded by conditions peculiarly unfavorable to human existence and confronted by dangers that would have overwhelmed a man lacking in courage and initiative, this native American maintained his poise and applied himself to the task of mastering the situation into which a seemingly unkind fate had brought him. Not only did this Indian successfully resist the hostile forces that threatened his destruction but, with no mechanical appliance other than a knife, he started a fire, erected a shelter, fashioned traps for fish and' game and supplied him self with the three essentials of life, - food, clothing and a. Habitation. Before the long sub-arctic winter was over he had gathered a large stock of furs and had constructed a canoe in which to transport his furs to a place where they would have a value a hundred fold greater than in the wilder ness in which he had collected them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Resources, Lumber Industry, and Lumber Export Trade of Finland The manufacturing methods in Finland are being rapidly im proved, and durin late years the smaller mills have, to a large ex tent, been bought y the larger companies, whereby the character of the lumber for export is made more uniform. One may, therefore, look to Finland as one Of the world's principal suppliers Of timber and lumber products. The lumber production in Finland has not yet reached its maximum and the country may be considered as one of the most promising lumber producers in Europe. The labor situation has passed through a very critical stage, but with the return of normal conditions and an ade uate supply of the necessities Of life, it is believed that the Finnish abor question W111 be satisfactorily settled. The activities Of the Finnish Lumber Exporters' Association is of particular interest to American shippers, because cooperation Of the Finnish lumber exporters has enabled them to sell their lumber to advantage, in spite of the fact that as much as board feet was stored in Finland when the armistice was signed. It is also of interest to note how the Finnish association has cooperated with the Swedish association Of lumber exporters. An important future problem for Finland is the shi ping ques tion. The present merchant marine Of Finland is ina equate, but other countries have already opened new direct steamship lines to several Of the most important markets for Finnish lumber, and it is believed that this circumstance will materially assist the Finnish exporters.10 forest resources and lumber industry OF finland. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The once denuded northeastern United States is now a region of trees. Nature Next Door argues that the growth of cities, the construction of parks, the transformation of farming, the boom in tourism, and changes in the timber industry have together brought about a return of northeastern forests. Although historians and historical actors alike have seen urban and rural areas as distinct, they are in fact intertwined, and the dichotomies of farm and forest, agriculture and industry, and nature and culture break down when the focus is on the history of Northeastern woods. Cities, trees, mills, rivers, houses, and farms are all part of a single transformed regional landscape. In an examination of the cities and forests of the northeastern United States-with particular attention to the woods of Maine, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and Vermont-Ellen Stroud shows how urbanization processes there fostered a period of recovery for forests, with cities not merely consumers of nature but creators as well. Interactions between city and hinterland in the twentieth century Northeast created a new wildness of metropolitan nature: a reforested landscape intricately entangled with the region's cities and towns.
