Book excerpt: 'Tiggs and The Midnight Choir' is contemporary ghost story. Although aimed at 8-12-year olds, this middle grade fiction is a good read for both young and old... a comedy suspense in which a mythical creature, a young boy and ancient choir prove that modern and medieval mischief can be just as much fun. The book features James, aged 9. James is poor, with nothing except a good heart, bags of enthusiasm and a singing voice that earns him a place as a Cathedral Chorister. James loves his new boarding school life but, while exploring a secret passage leading to the Cathedral, he stumbles upon a ghostly Midnight Choir, unearths a sinister plot to threaten the Cathedral's concerts and befriends the Guardian of the Cathedral, a magnificent but mischievous Griffin called Tiggs. Together, they must resolve a mystery that could damage not only the Midnight Choir but the Cathedral itself.... Right, that was the blurb! So, apart from the fun and thrills, what's so special about our book that would make you want to buy it? Well, we've mixed fiction, reality and history into a really exciting adventure. The place where it all happens is real... you can visit Exeter Cathedral and even see the hatch where the secret passage lies... and imagine climbing through to join the ghostly Midnight Choir. Even the graffiti on the effigy of Bishop Stafford is real... all we've done is to create names for the initials etched into the poor old Bishop, which date back hundreds of years. Historical dates are true too - like the bombing of Exeter Cathedral in World War II. But most of all, our 'unlikely hero' is real. James really did gain a Choristership to this amazing boarding school... and it really is another world. He loved it so much that he even illustrated our book with over 140 of his own quirky drawings. OK, so the mythical Griffin, the 'sinister plot' and the Midnight Choir are imaginative add-ons, but to a life that really exists. The dusky smells, haunting sounds and chill air of the ancient Cathedral are part of everyday life for the Choristers. They gave rise to a sense of imagination and adventure in us... and we hope that they will for everyone who reads our book. This is a good all-year-round book with a Christmassy ending that makes it a perfect gift. What makes it even more special is that 50% of the profits are going to Exeter Cathedral and Exeter Cathedral School, enabling them to offer other children the exciting life that they've given to James. With warm wishes from us both, Julie and James

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1993, The Virgin Suicides announced the arrival of a major new American novelist. In a quiet suburb of Detroit, the five Lisbon sisters—beautiful, eccentric, and obsessively watched by the neighborhood boys—commit suicide one by one over the course of a single year. As the boys observe them from afar, transfixed, they piece together the mystery of the family’s fatal melancholy, in this hypnotic and unforgettable novel of adolescent love, disquiet, and death. Jeffrey Eugenides evokes the emotions of youth with haunting sensitivity and dark humor and creates a coming-of-age story unlike any of our time. Adapted into a critically acclaimed film by Sofia Coppola, The Virgin Suicides is a modern classic, a lyrical and timeless tale of sex and suicide that transforms and mythologizes suburban middle-American life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Half of all the colleges founded before the Civil War did not survive. Wittenberg did. This is the story of a college on the Ohio frontier that sought to Americanize millions of German immigrants and to Americanize the German Lutheran Church. In spite of that, Wittenberg was caught in the anti-foreign prejudice of “Nativists” who feared the influence of immigrants on American institutions. The school prospered after the Civil War as America embraced German culture from classical music to the Christmas tree. The school again faced prejudice in the anti-German furor of World War I. Simultaneously, this is the story of students and faculty coping with the pressures of a nation going from the poverty of the rural frontier to the wealth of an urban-industrial society and how they and Wittenberg changed."

But the Serrao-Orlov Corporation is nothing if not tenacious, especially about it's proprietary AI's, and it wants their property back. However, Persephone is run by Rosie, and they are in charge of an organized group of beneficent criminals and assassins, along with a bunch of worn mercenaries who have a thing for doing the honorable thing, despite the odds. And in a fight with the Serrao-Orlov Corporation, the odds are not going to be good, but it would be a glorious fight. Award-nominated author Stina Leicht has created a visciously feminist take on The Magnificent Seven by the way of Blade Runner and Westworld"--

Book excerpt: Secrets of master guitarists, revealed in conversation. Guitar Talk offers interviews with many of the most creative guitarists of our time. This new book presents these conversations, between Joel Harrison and Nels Cline, Pat Metheny, Fred Frith, Bill Frisell, Julian Lage, Elliott Sharp, Michael Gregory Jackson, Ben Monder, Anthony Pirog, Henry Kaiser, Mike and Leni Stern, Vernon Reid, Mary Halvorson, Nguyên Le, Rez Abbasi, Ava Mendoza, Liberty Ellman, Brandon Ross, Wayne Krantz, Dave Fiuczynski, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Miles Okazaki, Sheryl Bailey, Rafiq Bhatia, and Ralph Towner—twenty-seven great guitarists in all. An enormous range of approaches and sounds exist in the modern guitar. The instrument can howl, scrape, scratch, scream, sing, pluck, and soothe. What stands out in this book is not so much the instrument itself, rather the wonderful and idiosyncratic personalities of these bold souls, their sometimes wild, often zigzagging, and ultimately profound journeys toward beauty, meaning, and excellence in their work. We find out that jazz icon Bill Frisell won a high school band contest playing R&B tunes, beating out future members of Earth Wind and Fire. We learn which of Nels Cline's compositions he wishes to have played at his funeral. Michael Gregory Jackson recounts painful episodes of racism as he stretched between the chasm of avant jazz, rock, and blues in the 1980s. Many more revelations, amusements, and philosophies abound.
