Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thymus is a gland that over the last two centuries has generated great awareness not only from the anatomical perspective but also for the physiological and pat- logical roles it plays in many disease processes. Prior to the early studies on its th anatomy and physiology in the 18 century, the thymus was believed to perform - usual and curious functions such as purification of the nervous system, providing a protective cushion for the vasculature of the superior mediastinum, fetal nouri- ment, or more spiritual roles such as being the seat of the soul, among others. D- th ing the 19 century important anatomical/physiological studies took place focusing on the role of the thymus in pathological conditions. However, it was not until the th middle of the 19 century that a more comprehensive analysis of the role of the thymic gland and its role in pathogenesis began to emerge. Currently, while the knowledge gained on the diverse aspects of the thymic gland has furthered our understanding of its role in a gamut of processes, more knowledge is still being sought, and by no means is a full understanding of the gland’s physi- ogy and pathology complete. Different aspects, including its purported endocrine function, its association with other autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus erythematosus, among others, are under evaluation and research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thymus gland has always fascinated me and, despite the ever-growing abun dance of medical books, this subject seemed to be a bit of a "poor relation." As a surgeon, the lack of information was particularly frustrating, and this is why I de cided to edit a text covering the different aspects of thymic pathology, surgery, and prognosis. It is always difficult to strike a balance between what is to be included and left out of a book about a subject intended for readers of different specialities. This one was written primarily to provide valuable information to surgeons on most aspects related to thymic surgery and to other specialists who are often confront ed with thymic diseases. Written by leaders in their respective fields, I hope it will provide an excellent reference for those interested in an up-to-date synthesis of general knowledge of such highly specialized areas as immunology, pathology, and neuroscience. The opening chapters on clinical management provide a historical review and descriptions of the normal thymus and surgical pathology. Later chapters review the various diseases related to the surgical pathology of the thymus. Investiga tions, surgical procedures, and other therapeutic modalities are also extensively covered. The book closes with chapters on the postoperative evolution of myas thenia gravis and thymic tumors, as well as on the effect of thymectomy in hu man oncogenesis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-five years have passed since J. MILLER'S basic work on the central role of the thymus for the generation of immunological reactivi ty. During this time, the abundance of fascinating literature on the immunological and functional aspects of this organ has been in contrast to the paucity of reports on its role in pathology. The causal or formal pathogenesis even of many of the well-documented pathological fea tures is so far unexplained or at least uncertain. In spite of some concep tual progress related to the work of CASTLEMAN, LEVINE, and ROSAI, we regrettably have to say that in pathology the thymus remains almost as inconspicuous as 25 years ago. Only the new techniques developed in recent years have made it possible to look as closely into the complicated structural organization of the thymus as it appears to be necessary to observe and document abnormalities. Major steps have been taken with the advent of mono clonal antibody immune histochemistry and with detailed ultrastructur al studies in embryology. At this point, pathologists and researchers with a special interest in the thymus were asked to give overviews of their respective fields of interest in light of recent findings in immunology and basic insights into the structural-functional interrelationship of the human thymus. The results of this initiative have been brought together in this volume.

Book excerpt: This book reviews normal thymic structure and covers the histomorphology of benign and malignant tumors and rare lesions of the thymus, with detailed descriptions of over 300 full color photomicrographs accompanied by relevant clinical and radiology photographs and anatomical drawings. It includes chapters on the surgical pathology and cytology of thymic lesions (which is rarely described in the available literature), and all grades and stages of the most common thymic lesions. Written and edited by leading experts on pathology, the book highlights the expanded role of pathologists in patient care for thymic lesions. It will help students to understand thymic cytology and surgical pathology in detail and enable them to answer questions on thymic surgical resections and cytology cases in their pathology post-graduation examination. In addition, the book offers a comprehensive, richly illustrated guide to thymic pathology for clinicians, practicing pathologists, post-graduate residents and students alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detailed understanding of gross pathology is mandatory for successful pathologists, but this knowledge also provides a sound foundation for those intending to become surgeons, internists, and obstetrician/gynecologists. For pathologists, pathology residents, and pathology assistants, knowledge of gross pathology is essential for guidance in selecting the correct areas of pathologic lesions to sample for microscopy and frozen section examination. This atlas provides a comprehensive illustration and description of a wide range and number of pathologic processes and diseases affecting all the major organs of the body. Emphasis is placed on how the anatomic structure of different organs may determine the pattern of involvement by disease processes and how such patterns may aid in the correct diagnosis of the gross pathology. In some cases, multiple illustrations of disease processes are given to show evolution of the disease. Histologic illustrations of selected gross lesions are also included where relevant. The atlas is illustrated with more than 1,200 color photomicrographs.

Much of this knowledge is widely dispersed throughout the literature. Although thymectomy is well established as a surgical procedure, these advances need to be made available to the surgeon. Furthermore, neurologists and physicians require a better understanding of the surgical aspects of the thymus. This book, written by selected experts, provides an up-to-date and concise review of the thymus gland for both the surgeon and the physician.
