Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All year long the prophets speak to us at Mass, often beginning their message with “Thus says the Lord.” They thunder. They comfort. They scold. They encourage. They sometimes speak in beautiful poetry, often sounding urgent, sometimes sounding strange. Their purpose was to reveal to the people what God expected, and now, over two and a half millennia later, they are still fulfilling that purpose. Although we can usually catch connections between the readings from the Old Testament prophets and the readings of the New Testament, most of us don’t know much about the actual situations the prophets were responding to when they wrote, or what it was like to be a prophet in the ancient world. Old Testament scholar Richard J. Clifford sj has written this book to help us understand the prophets and so draw more meaning from their words in the liturgy. He begins with what we hear at Mass—with the way the lectionary presents the prophets to us now, in contrast to the way they were heard (seldomly) before the Second Vatican Council. The author explains how we can best interpret the prophets—in their own context and within the Christian tradition. Professor Clifford takes us into the ancient near east to explain the calling of the prophet. He introduces us to those who prefigured the prophets, such as Abraham and Moses, then to those we know from the many stories about them—Elijah and Elisha. He moves on to the many prophets who wrote as well as preached (Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Baruch, Amos, and so forth), and then he zooms in on Isaiah, the prophet we hear from most often in the liturgy. In this survey, the author explains what is known about each prophet and the situation in which he worked, then discusses how the text associated with him is structured, its distinguishing features, and what parts of it appear in the lectionary. Finally, we learn how the prophets communicated effectively in their oral society, how they understood their mission, and how they understood God's purpose. This brief but deep and sympathetic introduction to the prophets will help readers proclaim the prophets’ words with more empathy and understanding. It will fascinate Bible study and Scripture sharing groups, and it will help interested assembly members appreciate more fully the meaning of the prophets’ messages—for their audience and for us.

Book excerpt: "Though 'biblical theology' has long been considered a strictly Christian enterprise, Marvin A. Sweeney here proposes a Jewish theology of the Hebrew Bible, based on the importance of Tanak as the foundation of Judaism and organized around the major components: Torah, Nevi'im (Prophets), and Kethuvim (Writings). Sweeney finds the structuring themes of Jewish life: the constitution of the nation Israel in relation to God; the disruption of that ideal, documented by the Prophets; and the reconstitution of the nation around the Second Temple in the Writings. Throughout he is attentive to tensions within and among the texts and the dialogical character of Israel's sacred heritage" -- Publisher description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God and Christ desperately want us to know what Satan has been able to obscure and hide from mankind. Christ had one simple message he told everyone. We don’t know what God and Christ desperately want us to know. The truth is in Scripture, and the keys to unlocking the secrets are available to this generation. This book will open your eyes to unbelievable truths. The story is so fantastic that it eclipses fiction, and much of what we have discovered flies in the face of inherited beliefs. We must be prepared to consider Scripture confirmed by history, current events, and new scientific discoveries. God’s holy day memorial commands and observances detail what has happened and what will surely happen again. The news is good for believers and those who are willing follow a simplified plan to understand what your Bible has to say about God’s purpose to save all mankind. Somehow, we have lost our way, and “the secret” is hidden in plain sight. It is in your Bible, but roadblocks have crept into our interpretations and our understanding that frustrate the efforts of what God and Christ have to say. Once you begin to challenge yourself to dig deeper, you will see and understand more of what God would have you know. There are signs and wonders in Scripture, in memorial observances, and in the heavens that will open your eyes to fantastic events around us right now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The One Year Chronological Bibleoffers a fascinating way to read through the Bible in one year, in as little as fifteen minutes per day! Gain a better understanding of the order of biblical events and the historical context in which they unfolded. The entire Bible text--books, chapters, and even verses--is arranged in the order the events actually happened. Prophetic books are interwoven with the historical accounts they accompanied. Psalms follow the events about which they were written. Proverbs are placed in the time they were compiled. The life of Christ is woven into one moving story. And Paul's letters to the young churches in the first century are integrated into the book of Acts. Transition statements help you understand why some Scripture portions appear where they do. You do not have to be a Bible historian to appreciate the fascinating new perspective waiting for you in The One Year Chronological Bible. It's like reading some of your favorite passages for the very first time. This edition uses the popular New King James Version of the Bible.
