Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twelve Months With the Birds and Poets This study of birds and poets is divided into twelve chapters, one for each month of the year, beginning with April, the opening of the birds' year. The birds are discussed in the month most appropriate to them by reason of habits of nesting, migration or other distinguishing characteristics. This plan enables the reader to live through the year with the birds, and to learn when to look for them. The observations were made in Illinois, Indiana and Michigan, and the book may be used as a safe guide for the study of the more common birds of this latitude from the Rocky Mountains east to the Atlantic seaboard. Book Synopsis Bird and Bough (Classic Reprint) by : John Burroughs
Download or read book Bird and Bough (Classic Reprint) written by John Burroughs and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird and Bough Two or three years ago, a writer in one of the leading New York papers, commenting unfavorably upon some recent utterances of mine in one of the magazines, said that my readers could forgive me everything but my poetry. Now I am going to presume that some of them, at least, can forgive me even that. Have I not had letters from a few of them I do not say how many expressing a desire to see my verses collected in a volume? Could any poet withstand the appeal of even a few disinterested persons who expressed so reasonable and so modest a wish? At any rate, I shall let their suggestion overweigh the adverse opinion of the hard-hearted critic just referred to. The one thing that I claim for my verses is that they keep a little closer to our wild nature to the birds, the flowers, the seasons than most of our minor poetry has done. I do not believe the reader will find a hint of any Flora or Fauna but our own in my pages. Then if I have also succeeded in bringing home the bough with the bird I heard singing upon it, or some suggestion of its place in the fields and woods and in the season, my title will need no explanation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetry of Catullus The favourites of the gods are released from life before they have had time to outstay their youth. The tribute to those who died young is tribute to the youth which they never lived to lose - ih part, no doubt, objective, but in part also subjective, and prompted by the thought expressed in that line of Thackeray: Oh, the brave days, when we were twenty-one! Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird of the Bush: A Collection of Poems Let no man suppose that I am prompted to write this sketch of my life by a fear that it will never be written unless by myself. My fear, so far as fear enters into the matter, is quite the reverse; my purpose being to forestall any other man. While many men can with ease appear to be what'they are not, I always found it hard to_ appear what I was; and I have been mis judged and misunderstood all my life, even'by my own friends; and my heart has Often been mangled and lacerated by those who would have spared me, had they known me capable of feeling anything less pointed and penetrating than a bayonet or the spear of Hector. This book was released on 2019-01-11 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Birds and Their Nestlings Since permanent interest in any subject cannot be awakened through occasional lessons, it is believed that much profit will come from a few weeks' continuous read ing along a single line, - reading which will create a love for the beautiful through understanding. Ignorance closes the door to much of our best' literature, which can be interpreted only through a sympathetic familiarity with nature. Color, sound, and movement are always attractive to childhood, and nowhere can they be found in such pleas ing combination as in the bird world. The study of its busy little inhabitants in their natural environment will not only add pleasure to the walks of the child, but will help him to a knowledge of the adaptation of all life to its surroundings. It will also lead to the intelligent appreciation of litera ture and music. Since the birth of time the birds have inspired poets and musicians. They have also given the keenest pleas ure to countless thousands who have never attempted to express what they felt. To interest a child in these guests of our groves, - these feathered entertainers who are also workers in our fields and orchards, - is to put him in possession of a wellspring of interest as enduring as life itself.
