Book Synopsis The Throne Carrier of God by : Jamal J. Elias
Download or read book The Throne Carrier of God written by Jamal J. Elias and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes a comprehensive investigation of the life and teachings of one of the most famous Sufis of the Iranian world. Simnānī spent his early life as a courtier at the Ilkhanid Mongol court and was a cherished companion of the emperor Arghun. After a mystical experience on the battlefield, he turned his back on a life of luxury and became a Sufi. He advanced rapidly in his spiritual quest and soon became one of the most influential Sufi masters in Iran. Working primarily from the most Arabic and Persian manuscripts of Simnānī’s writings, the author has analyzed Simnānī's thinking to show the overall coherence of his world-view and to demonstrate the importance of his ideas to the development of Islamic mysticism. Along with this analysis, the author provides a detailed account of Simnānī's life and times, as well as a systematic description of Simnānī's instructions for Sufi practioners of all levels.
Book Synopsis LIFE Jubilee! Queen Elizabeth II by : The Editors of LIFE
Download or read book LIFE Jubilee! Queen Elizabeth II written by The Editors of LIFE and published by Life. This book was released on 2012-07-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April of 2011 LIFE ventured to London for our bestselling book The Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. This June we return to capture all the pomp and circumstance as England celebrates its queen's 60th year on the throne. All of the best photography from the festivities will be in these pages — as will so much else. Directly descended from Victoria, Elizabeth is now on the verge of supplanting that great queen as Britain's longest serving monarch ever — and LIFE has had its cameras trained on her since she was a little girl. We were there to record her precocious courage during World War II, her splendiferous marriage to Prince Philip, her glittery coronation, her travails and dramas in the modern age. The other characters that come and go in these pages are equally famous and compelling: Wayward Uncle Edward who had to abdicate the throne, the Queen Mum and her hats, Elizabeth's father George VI who overcame his stammer to rally his countrymen during the war, Prince Charles, Lady Diana, the grandsons Will and Harry — and on and on. We see these people move through palaces opulent beyond belief (Buckingham, Windsor), and estates that dwarf Downton Abbey (Sandringham, Balmoral). We learn of their lives, their loves, their scandals. Ever with her head held high, there is Elizabeth II. Here is her royal story, told in its entirety. This book will include not only grand photography of the Jubilee but of prior House of Windsor celebrations, including Victoria's own 60th anniversary celebration, Elizabeth's wedding, the so-called "Wedding of the Century" (Charles and Di's), and the recent marriage of Elizabeth's grandson to Princess Kate. It is a splashy, festive book. It fairly shouts: "Long live the queen!"

Book excerpt: "Brilliant, vain, generous, calculating, Isabella D'Este played the Renaissance game with an expertise that outflanked Popes and Emperors, using her brains, her charm, and her unswerving purpose to psych her opponents. An accomplished flirt, an astute statesman, she kept Mantua, the state ostensibly ruled by her husband, intact and safe from a series of powerful predators: Cesare Borgia, the Republic of Venice, a succession of Popes, the King of Naples, two Kings of France. Toward the end of her life, she turned over to her son one of the few independent principalities of sixteenth-century Italy"--from front jacket flap.

Download or read book Win or Die written by Bruce Craven and published by Thomas Dunne Books. This book was released on 2019-03-19 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “When it comes to the most-anticipated business books of 2019, Win or Die: Leadership Secrets From Game of Thrones is the one to beat.”—Inc. A guide to leading without losing your head, inspired by the bestselling books and smash television series Game of Thrones. "When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground." —Cersei Lannister One of the great joys of Game of Thrones is strategizing what bold moves you'd make in this bloody, volatile world—from the comfort of your living room. And one of the great terrors of being a leader is knowing your real world can be just as brutal—and offices bring no comfort. Every day you're presented with opportunities and challenges, and must decide which roads to follow, which risks to confront, when to deny an opportunity and when to pursue the call to adventure. And you won't know whether you'll profit or fail while you're in the thick of it. In Win or Die: Leadership Secrets from Game of Thrones, Bruce Craven brilliantly analyzes the journeys of the best and worst leaders in Westeros, so that leaders can create their own narratives of success. Craven considers beloved characters such as Ned Stark, Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, and Tyrion Lannister as they make terrible decisions and fatal mistakes, but also achieve incredible victories and surprising successes, learning and growing along their (often bloody) ways. Readers will learn how to face conflict and build resilience, develop contextual and emotional intelligence, develop their vision, and more. This entertaining and accessible guide will show readers how to turn danger into opportunity, even when dragons threaten.

Book Synopsis Under Solomon's Throne by : Morgan Y. Liu
Download or read book Under Solomon's Throne written by Morgan Y. Liu and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2012-05-20 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under Solomon's Throne provides a rare ground-level analysis of post-Soviet Central Asia's social and political paradoxes by focusing on an urban ethnic community: the Uzbeks in Osh, Kyrgyzstan, who have maintained visions of societal renewal throughout economic upheaval, political discrimination, and massive violence. Morgan Liu illuminates many of the challenges facing Central Asia today by unpacking the predicament of Osh, a city whose experience captures key political and cultural issues of the region as a whole. Situated on the border of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan—newly independent republics that have followed increasingly divergent paths to reform their states and economies—the city is subject to a Kyrgyz government, but the majority of its population are ethnic Uzbeks. Conflict between the two groups led to riots in 1990, and again in 2010, when thousands, mostly ethnic Uzbeks, were killed and nearly half a million more fled across the border into Uzbekistan. While these tragic outbreaks of violence highlight communal tensions amid long-term uncertainty, a close examination of community life in the two decades between reveals the way Osh Uzbeks have created a sense of stability and belonging for themselves while occupying a postcolonial no-man's-land, tied to two nation-states but not fully accepted by either one. The first ethnographic monograph based on extensive local-language fieldwork in a Central Asian city, this study examines the culturally specific ways that Osh Uzbeks are making sense of their post-Soviet dilemmas. These practices reveal deep connections with Soviet and Islamic sensibilities and with everyday acts of dwelling in urban neighborhoods. Osh Uzbeks engage the spaces of their city to shape their orientations relative to the wider world, postsocialist transformations, Islamic piety, moral personhood, and effective leadership. Living in the shadow of Solomon's Throne, the city's central mountain, they envision and attempt to build a just social order.
