Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four years ago when the first European Symposium on the re lationship between alterations of blood clotting mechanisms and atherosclerosis was organized, we asked ourselves which would be the best way to obtain both scientific and practical contributions. We have been interested in cardiovascular diseases for several years now and have therefore focused our attention on the "container" (Le. the blood vessel) rather than on the "contents" (Le. the various components of blood) as considered only from a haemodynamic point of view. In recent years correlations were found between alterations of vascular wall and alteration of coagulative, fibrinolytic, and plate let factors as well as of haemorheological phenomena in the thrombo genic evolution of atherosclerotic lesions. A close cooperation between cardiologists and workers interested in atherosclerosis and thrombosis is therefore necessary. We think that the most appropriate approach to the various problems concerning correlations between thrombogenic and atherosclerotic lesions is co-operation between experts in these different fields of research. We thus decided to organize the 2nd Symposium taking into account the great progress achieved in this field during the past few years, and hope that discussions on diagnostic and therapeutical perspec' tives will yield useful elements both for the cardiologist and for the cardiologist and for the general practitioner.

Starting with the structure and fundamental principles of angioscopy, it shows readers how to apply the image to comprehensive care of coronary-artery patients. Plentiful color photos and illustrations will enable readers to investigate and classify plaques and thrombi and to evaluate coronary stent- and drug-based therapies. The authors are leading researchers on angioscopy. This book offers the perfect guide not only for new clinicians but also for cardiologists who have already adopted this technique for medical examination and treatment. Angioscopy is a unique medical technique for visualizing the interior of blood vessels and helps physicians not only to diagnose the pathology but also to measure the effectiveness of Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or antiarteriosclerotic drugs. Furthermore, the recently developed molecular angioscopy approach allows us to observe Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxide, collagen, and macrophages, and is rapidly growing in importance.

Book Synopsis How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease by : United States. Public Health Service. Office of the Surgeon General
Download or read book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease written by United States. Public Health Service. Office of the Surgeon General and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report considers the biological and behavioral mechanisms that may underlie the pathogenicity of tobacco smoke. Many Surgeon General's reports have considered research findings on mechanisms in assessing the biological plausibility of associations observed in epidemiologic studies. Mechanisms of disease are important because they may provide plausibility, which is one of the guideline criteria for assessing evidence on causation. This report specifically reviews the evidence on the potential mechanisms by which smoking causes diseases and considers whether a mechanism is likely to be operative in the production of human disease by tobacco smoke. This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.
Book Synopsis Platelets in Cardiovascular Disease by : Deepak L. Bhatt
Download or read book Platelets in Cardiovascular Disease written by Deepak L. Bhatt and published by Imperial College Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Platelets in Cardiovascular Disease provides an in-depth and current coverage of relevant platelet biology and antiplatelet therapy that is in clinical use today and potentially for the future. The book provides a succinct overview of the critical role of platelets in cardiovascular medicine. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality worldwide, and recent research has found that the platelet is central to the genesis of heart attacks and stroke as well as many of the complications of angioplasty and bypass surgery. An explosion of knowledge of the biology of platelets has established their important role in the formation of blood clots and, perhaps more intriguingly, their role as inflammatory cells. This growth in information has been paralleled by the development of several drugs that can interfere with platelet action and thereby improve patient outcomes. Indeed, several antiplatelet drugs already in development may ultimately lead to marked advances in both the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease. Drawing upon a panel of international experts, Platelets in Cardiovascular Disease delivers a concise yet thorough review of the major developments in antiplatelet therapy. Practicing clinicians as well as those involved in the development of new antithrombotic therapies will find the book interesting and useful. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Platelet Biology the Role of Platelets in Hemostasis, Thrombosis and Inflammation (274 KB). Book Synopsis Antithrombotic Drug Therapy in Cardiovascular Disease by : Arman T. Askari
Download or read book Antithrombotic Drug Therapy in Cardiovascular Disease written by Arman T. Askari and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-20 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Substantial morbidity and mortality remains associated with thrombotic events has stimulated the rapid expansion of the available armamentarium to combat pathologic thrombosis. Pathologic thrombosis plays an essential role in the pathogenesis of acute coronary syndromes (ACS), ischemic complications of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), venous thromboembolic disease, and embolic complications of arrhythmias and various cardiomyopathies. Written by experts in the field, Antithrombotic Drug Therapy in Cardiovascular Disease carefully examines individual and various combinations of the available antithrombotic regimens including fibrinolytic agents, antiplatelet therapies (aspirin, thieneopyridines, glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors), and anticoagulant therapies (unfractionated heparin, low-molecular-weight heparins, direct thrombin inhibitors, and synthetic factor X inhibitors), non-ST-segment elevation (NSTE) ACS and ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). A detailed overview, Antithrombotic Drug Therapy in Cardiovascular Disease presents the evidence demonstrating the efficacy of available antithrombotic therapies in specific disease states such as atrial fibrillation, cardiomyopathy, valvular heart disease, and heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT).
Book Synopsis The Venous Drainage of the Human Myocardium by : Michael Lüdinghausen
Download or read book The Venous Drainage of the Human Myocardium written by Michael Lüdinghausen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study is to present comprehensive morphological data, almost all of it is new, concerning the venous drainage of the myocardium via the coronary sinus and its related veins. This information is of great significance, not least for the sucessful coronary sinus catheterization and reperfusion of most, or single, cardiac veins. The author presents the three principal cardiac venous systems, the greater (major) cardiac venous, the smaller (minor) cardiac venous system, and the compound venous system. The work concludes with an evaluation of the many anatomical peculiarities and and hindrances with regard to the catheterization of the coronary sinus and the reperfusion of (selected) cardiac veins.
Book Synopsis The Saccharine Disease by : T. L. Cleave
Download or read book The Saccharine Disease written by T. L. Cleave and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Saccharine Disease, Conditions Caused by the Taking of Refined Carbohydrates, such as Sugar and White Flour contends that the causation of these conditions has been obscured through confusing distinctions between unnatural, refined carbohydrates and that of natural, unrefined carbohydrates like fruits and whole meal flour. The author notes that all the foregoing conditions are really the manifestations of a single master-disease—that many of the major diseases of modern societies are caused by consuming unreasonable amounts of refined carbohydrate foods. The author discusses that in the short time that man has changed his diet, evolutionary adaptation is left behind. He gives two rules to prevent and arrest all saccharine disease manifestations: Do not eat any food unless you definitely want it, and avoid eating white flour or white sugar. These two rules will prevent gastric or duodenal ulcer, diabetes, coronary disease, constipation, complications of varicose veins, hemorrhoids, E. coli infections, obesity, and some skin conditions, As a retired Surgeon-General of the Royal Navy, the author bases his assumptions on evolutionary, epidemiological, and other scientific or historical work. This book can give insights to dieticians, food researchers, nutritionists, people on diet, and general medicine practioners.
