Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Well before Evel Knievel or Hollywood stuntmen, reality television or the X Games, North America had a long tradition of stunt performance, of men (and some women) who sought media attention and popular fame with public feats of daring. Many of these feats—jumping off bridges, climbing steeples and buildings, swimming incredible distances, or doing tricks with wild animals—had their basis in the manual trades or in older entertainments like the circus. In The Thrill Makers, Jacob Smith shows how turn-of-the-century bridge jumpers, human flies, lion tamers, and stunt pilots first drew crowds to their spectacular displays of death-defying action before becoming a crucial, yet often invisible, component of Hollywood film stardom. Smith explains how these working-class stunt performers helped shape definitions of American manhood, and pioneered a form of modern media celebrity that now occupies an increasingly prominent place in our contemporary popular culture.

Book excerpt: Thrill of the Rookie chronicles the life of Osaze Ehigiator, beginning in Nigeria, a nation plagued with corruption and incessant coup, and how the author escaped to the USA. The tale then follows his difficult years in the States and his experiences with the underside of Americans who operate under different sets of codes called The Eleventh Commandments before pulling himself up by the bootstraps and finding success. This is a book unlike any other before it. It is an autobiography with a twist to it-memoir. Instead of concentrating on me and my experience, lots of focus is placed on taking you through the entire journey I have been through and let you experience these things on your own without physically going through them. You get the full benefits of the experiments without actually been used as a specimen. You enjoy the thrills, humors and treats without feeling any of the pains or face the challenges. This book now dubbed the immigrants bible is also being defined as an adventure to a comic planet, full of excitements, challenges and humors. 3 independents book reviews 1: Ehigiator remains largely on point in his message that the American dream is attainable but must be appreciated and nurtured.Engaging -Kirkus Review 2: A highly readable book----Ehigiators talent for story telling is evident -BlueInk Review, 3: An intense, personal story of what it takes to embrace the American dream. Told with an intoxicating blend of humility, earnestness, and absurdity. Clarion Review- 4 stars out of 5.

Book excerpt: The Honourable Jack Sydney George "just-call-me-Bud" Cullen defied all odds when he was elected Sarnia's Member of Parliament during the head-spinning days of Trudeaumania. Candid and outspoken, Cullen was never one to shy away from controversy. Just as he spoke openly about the difficult issues surrounding his ministerial responsibilities, he never hid the fact that he and his chief of staff had fallen in love. This memoir, written after Cullen's death by his chief of staff who became his partner and wife of thirty years, is unusually poignant and revealing. Nicole Chenier-Cullen's discussions of the critical issues that the minister tackled, such as new immigration legislation, dealing with Quebec's first separatist government, and the tragedy of the Vietnamese refugees, uncover a behind-the-scenes perspective never before known. Her humorous, straightforward account of life in a minister's office is most refreshing. Her honest, thoughtful discourse on how the couple survived what could have been a scandalous relationship adds a revealing dimension to the story, as does her portrayal of Cullen's transition from politician to Federal Court judge. Finally, the author's heart-wrenching account of her husband's final years, and how the family coped with the ravages of Lewy Body, an Alzheimer's related disease, packs a real emotional punch."

Book excerpt: A refreshing and liberating perspective to the church member who has actively participated in the life of their local church for 10, 15, 20 or more years, yet still feels spiritually dry. The author peels back the institutional veneer of the local church to delve into the spiritual dynamics that operate organically within and upon souls that believe in Jesus Christ. This divinely inspired work shines a much needed guiding light upon key faith concerns that impact the liveliness of a believer's walk, regardless of his/her situation of life. Addressed are such concerns as the revolving door of new converts, clarity about the nature of a genuine confession of faith, organic elements of God's transformation of the believer's soul and the necessity of being immersed into the revelation of Christ and His gift of God's life within us. Through this work the institutional veneer around the believer's religious life is put into perspective; thereby enabling a fluid fellowship with Jesus Christ and a vibrant servant.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over three decades, medical researchers have been extolling the many health benefits of a fatty acid called omega-3. Within omega-3 are three essential fatty acids: EPA, DHA, and ALA. These substances are called “essential” because they are absolutely necessary for the proper function of the body. And the range of tasks they perform is truly staggering: They protect against heart attacks, they lower blood pressure and cholesterol, they reduce arthritis and premenstrual pain, they improve memory and stave off depression, and they fight wrinkles and skin disorders. They are found in plant foods, such as seeds and nuts, and in cold water fish, such as salmon, but new research shows that there is a more potent and absorbable source of omega-3 that may offer greater protection. Written by best-selling author Dennis Goodman, MD, The Thrill of Krill is the first book to provide a clear understanding of why krill oil is a must for everyone interested in restoring and maintaining optimum health. Krill are tiny shrimp-like creatures found in the ocean. To a great extent, they make up the diet of most sea life, from whales and seals to squids and fish. Krill oil is to marine life what fish oil is to human life—except that krill oil is far superior to fish oil. Studies show that while fish oil is slow to be absorbed by the human body, krill oil is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream. In The Thrill of Krill, Dr. Goodman explores the latest research on krill, details the individual health benefits krill oil provides, and explains the differences between available krill oils. Also included is a resource section that will enable you to learn more about krill. With so many nutritional supplements on store shelves, it’s hard to know which one can make a real difference to your health. Backed by scientific research, The Thrill of Krill introduces an exciting and amazingly powerful source of omega-3s that can change your life for the better.

Book excerpt: For decades, professional photographers have been using large, expensive studio lighting setups for their shoots. While powerful and effective, they have certain limitations. A new generation of photographers has embraced speedlights, battery powered flashes that can mount on your camera or be triggered remotely. After years of using studio lights, Michael Mowbray switched over to speedlights. He started gradually but soon realized he could shoot nearly everything with speedlights. Specializing in wedding and senior portraits, Mowbray found freedom and renewed creativity with these lights. As he states in the introduction, he no longer chases light, he creates it. The book begins by outlining the core concepts for using speedlights as a primary light source. Knowing how light works allows you to control it. The same goes for your camera. Understanding how the flash and the camera interact using the camera’s metering system is the center of Mowray’s speedlight technique. It’s also important to understand how your camera and flashes communicate while they aren’t attached to one another. The ability to have remote flashes tucked into unique places for a shoot opens up the lighting options available to you. In addition to wedding and senior portrait photography, Mowbray works in fashion, commercial and family photography. The versatility of speedlights allows a professional photographer to work in many genres. After covering the core concepts, the book presents 60 of Mowbray’s world class images. Each photo is accompanied by a list of the equipment used for capturing the shot, alternate related images and a lighting diagram. One of the major advantages of a speedlight portrait system is that it allows you create the light you want virtually anywhere. Interesting unlit nooks magically become great photo settings. A common theme across much of Mowbray’s location work is using speedlights to create light and contrast where none currently exist. A shoot may require that you work at less than ideal times of the day. It is possible create your own sunrise, shoot at night when there is little natural light, or make the daytime look like night. This flexibility opens up the number and type of clients your business can handle. Attention to detail with the placement of lights can be the difference between a run-of-the-mill portrait and a striking, award winning image. Mowbray provides great detail on what went into making each of his photographs. Don’t get stuck in a rut using the same modifiers and the same lighting over and over again. It may work fine but it will ultimately limit you. Clients like choices, especially when they are investing a lot of money. Choices can often lead to bigger sales as clients feel the need to order more of the varied looks and styles. Working in edgier lighting styles and clothing combinations, unique backgrounds or locations can expand the variety of shots you get from a session. Whether going for that classic studio look or crafting something very dramatic and modern, speedlights give you the ability to improvise and expand your techniques. While Mowbray’s main focus is the power and flexibility of speedlights, he also provides great tips for composition and location scouting. Also necessary is the ability to improvise on the spot if your planned location doesn’t work out, like his rained out plans for an outdoor bridal shoot. While creative use of speedlights gives a lot of control over the image created, there are some instances where digital postproduction adds something extra that really makes the photo pop. Mowbray gives a number of examples where editing helped make the final image exactly what he and the client were looking for. Containing lots of images, diagrams, and detailed text, this book provides readers with a thorough understanding of the benefits of shooting with speedlights.

Book excerpt: In this new edition of Licence To Thrill, James Chapman builds upon the success of his classic work, regarded as the definitive scholarly study of the history of the James Bond film series from the first picture, Dr No (1962), to the present. He considers the origins of the films in the spy thrillers of Ian Fleming and examines the production histories of the films in the contexts of the British and international film industries. This edition includes a new introduction and chapters on Quantum of Solace (2008), Skyfall (2012), Spectre (2015) and No Time to Die (2021). Chapman explores how the films have changed over time in response to developments in the wider film culture and society at large. He charts the ever-evolving Bond formula, analysing the films' representations of nationhood, class, and gender in a constantly shifting cinematic and ideological landscape.

This book was released on 2020-03-30 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extreme sports, those activities that lie on the outermost edges of independent adventurous leisure activities, where a mismanaged mistake or accident would most likely result in death, have developed into a significant worldwide phenomenon (Brymer & Schweitzer, 2017a). Extreme sport activities are continually evolving, typical examples include BASE (an acronym for Buildings, Antennae, Span, Earth) jumping and related activities such as proximity flying, extreme skiing, big wave surfing, waterfall kayaking, rope free solo climbing and high-level mountaineering. While participant numbers in many traditional team and individual sports such as golf, basketball and racket sports have declined over the last decade or so, participant numbers in so called extreme sports have surged. Although extreme sports are still assumed to be a Western pastime, there has been considerable Global uptake. Equally, the idea that adventure sports are only for the young is also changing as participation rates across the generations are growing. For example, baby boomers are enthusiastic participants of adventure sports more generally (Brymer & Schweitzer, 2017b; Patterson, 2002) and Generation Z turn to extreme sports because they are popular and linked to escapism (Giannoulakis & Pursglove, 2017). Arguably, extreme sports now support a multi-billion dollar industry and the momentum seems to be intensifying. Traditional explanations for why extreme sports have become so popular are varied. For some, the popularity is explained as the desire to rebel against a society that is becoming too risk averse, for others it is about the spectacle and the merchandise that is associated with organised activities and athletes. For others it is just that there are a lot of people attracted by risk and danger or just want to show off. For others still it is about the desire to belong to sub-cultures and the glamour that goes with extreme sports. Some seek mastery in their chosen activity and in situations of significant challenges. This confusion is unfortunate as despite their popularity there is still a negative perception about extreme sports participation. There is a pressing need for clarity. The dominant research perspective has focused on positivist theory-driven perspectives that attempt to match extreme sports against predetermined characteristics. For the most part empirical research has conformed to predetermined societal perspectives. Other ways of knowing might reveal more nuanced perspectives of the human dimension of extreme sport participation. This special edition brings together cutting-edge research and thought examining psychology and extreme sports, with particular attention payed to the examination of motivations for initial participation, continued participation, effective performance, and outcomes from participation.
