Book excerpt: "Threshold 2000" helps us face up to a profound choice at the millenial crossing--to continue on the path of present beliefs and policies to an increasingly crowded, polluted, and vulnerable world, or to take the path of hope to a more sustainable, healthy, and secure global community. The unique feature of this book is its impassioned integration of ecological analysis with the search for spiritually informed values. "Threshold 2000" offers both a challenge and a vision to people of all faiths and no faith.

Book excerpt: 'A wild, sleazy, drug-filled odyssey ... Doyle's maverick novel deserves the accolades coming its way' Independent 'The best work to date from a writer who gets better and better with each release' Irish Indepdendent 'A masterclass in what not to do' New Statesman 'His best book so far: riddling, irreverent, fearless' TLS Rob has spent most of his confusing adult life wandering, writing, and imbibing literature and narcotics in equally vast doses. Now, stranded between reckless youth and middle age, between exaltation and despair, his travels have acquired a de facto purpose: the immemorial quest for transcendent meaning. On a lurid pilgrimage for cheap thrills and universal truth, Doyle's narrator takes us from the menacing peripheries of Paris to the drug-fuelled clubland of Berlin, from art festivals to sun-kissed islands, through metaphysical awakenings in Asia and the brink of destruction in Europe, into the shattering revelations brought on by the psychedelic DMT. A dazzling, intimate, and profound celebration of art and ageing, sex and desire, the limits of thought and the extremes of sensation, Threshold confirms Doyle as one of the most original writers in contemporary literature.

Book excerpt: This complex and compelling novel, written by retired Chicago Police Lieutenant Dennis M. Banahan, reveals the many faces of crime in the city. Taut action, political intrigue and an earthy pathos illuminate the range of man's Threshold of Pain and create a sexy, fast-paced thriller. The story unfolds at the end of 1968, a volatile year in Chicago's history. Undercover (Chicago) police officer Johnnie Parello, who is assigned to the elite Red Squad Unit, stumbles upon an incredulous lead that may link a University of Chicago law student with the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert Kennedy. When Parello attempts to launch an investigation into the matter, however, it appears that the FBI is stonewalling his efforts. Despite a federal injunction and pressure from the department to end the investigation, Parello and his partner, Big Mike Corrigan, are compelled to put the puzzle pieces together at all costs, and, it costs them plenty. The investigation that begins as a casual curiosity turns into a twenty-two year odyssey laden with death and political scandal. As we follow the well-structured plot, many characters captivate us, from Big Mike Corrigan's six-foot-seven thrust of spring-loaded energy to the dark, silky-skinned beauty of Detective Rennata McCray. Crisp writing and good pacing make Threshold of Pain a thoroughly engrossing crime novel.

Specifically, the lack of acceptance and appreciation between Muslims and Christians was suddenly catapulted into headlines around the world. Now, in the aftermath of war in Iraq, the need for understanding and respect among religious traditions and various cultures becomes ever more important. It is my hope that this book might nurture that mutual respect that fosters peace and justice, for they are God's desire for us, and gifts that all races and religions seek.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper addresses the issue of threshold effects between public debt and economic growth in the Caribbean. The main finding is that there exists a threshold debt to gross domestic product (GDP) ratio of 55–56 percent. Moreover, the debt dynamics begin changing well before this threshold is reached. Specifically, at debt levels lower than 30 percent of GDP, increases in the debt-to-GDP ratio are associated with faster economic growth. However, as debt rises beyond 30 percent, the effects on economic growth diminishes rapidly and at debt levels reaching 55-56 percent of GDP, the growth impacts switch from positive to negative. Thus, beyond this threshold, debt becomes a drag on growth.

She provides a detailed account of the social and psychic forces which constrain us to look and identify in normative ways, and the violence which that normativity implies.

Book excerpt: Natural resource managers face a complex decision-making environment characterized by the potential occurrence of rapid and abrupt ecological change. These abrupt changes are poorly accommodated by traditional natural resource planning and decision-making processes. As recognition of threshold processes has increased, contemporary models of ecological systems have been modified to better represent a broader range of ecological system dynamics. Key conceptual advances associated with the ideas of non-linear responses, the existence of multiple ecological stable states and critical thresholds are more likely the rule than the exception in ecological systems. Once an ecological threshold is crossed, the ecosystem in question is not likely to return to its previous state. There are many examples and a general consensus that climatic disruptions will drive now stable systems across ecological thresholds. This book provides professional resource managers with a broad general decision framework that illustrates the utility of including ecological threshold concepts in natural resource management. It gives an entry into the literature in this rapidly evolving concept, with descriptions and discussion of the promising statistical approaches for threshold detection and demonstrations of the utility of the threshold framework via a series of case studies.
