IHAVE often amused myself and friends, by relating stories of my adventures in the West, and am led to believe, by the, perhaps, too partial representations of those friends, that my life in the Prairies and Mountains for three years, is worthy of a record more enduring than their memories. I have passed a year and a half on the head waters of the Missouri and among the gorges of tl e Rocky Mountains as a hunter and a trapper, and t o years among the Spaniards and Camanches. I have suffered much from the inclemency of nature and of man, had many "hair breadth 'scapes" and acquired considerable information illustrative of Indian and Mexican character and customs. By a plain, unvarnished tale of Western life, of perils and of hardships, I hope to amuse the reader who delights in accounts of wild adventure, though found out of the 13 pages of a novel and possessing no attraction but their unadorned truthfulness. This book was released on 2017-01-30 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historical record of Thomas James depicts his travels through the gorges of the Rocky Mountains as a trapper and hunter. A journey that began following the return of Lewis and Clark from their voyage. This work describes the relations between the American government and both the Mexican populations and the native tribes at the time. He sought to record the considerable information he received from his travels and first-hand experience to illustrate the Indian and Mexican character, customs and traditions. He detailed battles between tribes, wars between the states, and his narrow escapes from hostile tribes of the regions he traveled. This work includes a colorful mix of cultural understanding in regards to the Indian and Mexican population in America, but also illustrates the adventure of an unexplored world and how the government utilized companies to explore the untouched regions of colonial America, and improve relations and trade with the natives. Not all the native tribes however were so accepting of these white trespassers and bloody feuds arose.

Book Synopsis Nine Years Among the Indians, 1870-1879 by : Herman Lehmann
Download or read book Nine Years Among the Indians, 1870-1879 written by Herman Lehmann and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 1993-05-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a genuine Little Big Man story, with all the color, sweep, and tragedy of a classic American western. It is the tale of Herman Lehmann, a captive of the Apaches on the Southern Plains of Texas and New Mexico during the 1870s. Adopted by a war chief, he was trained to be a warrior and waged merciless war on Apache enemies, both Indian and Euro-American. After killing an Apache medicine man in self-defense, he fled to a lonely hermitage on the Southern Plains until he joined the Comanches. Against his will, Lehmann was returned to his family in 1879. The final chapters relate his difficult readjustment to Anglo life. Lehmann's unapologetic narrative is extraordinary for its warm embrace of Native Americans and stinging appraisal of Anglo society. Once started, the story of this remarkable man cannot be put down. Dale Giese's introduction provides a framework for interpreting the Lehmann narrative.

Book Synopsis These People Have Always Been a Republic by : Maurice S. Crandall
Download or read book These People Have Always Been a Republic written by Maurice S. Crandall and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2019-09-06 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning three hundred years and the colonial regimes of Spain, Mexico, and the United States, Maurice S. Crandall's sweeping history of Native American political rights in what is now New Mexico, Arizona, and Sonora demonstrates how Indigenous communities implemented, subverted, rejected, and indigenized colonial ideologies of democracy, both to accommodate and to oppose colonial power. Focusing on four groups--Pueblos in New Mexico, Hopis in northern Arizona, and Tohono O'odhams and Yaquis in Arizona/Sonora--Crandall reveals the ways Indigenous peoples absorbed and adapted colonially imposed forms of politics to exercise sovereignty based on localized political, economic, and social needs. Using sources that include oral histories and multinational archives, this book allows us to compare Spanish, Mexican, and American conceptions of Indian citizenship, and adds to our understanding of the centuries-long struggle of Indigenous groups to assert their sovereignty in the face of settler colonial rule.
